Chance Encounter for #StaD May; Day Ten

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 10 prompt,  is from Sarah Cain,  the author of the Danny Ryan political thrillers, The 8th Circle and One By One.

The Prompt:

The chance encounter. Have you ever run into someone you know when you look grubby? Or maybe you see an old boyfriend at Starbucks. Or perhaps, as in Alfred Hitchcock’s famous Stranger’s On a Train, you run into a stranger who offers to do you a service, like murder, in return for you returning the favor. Think of a chance encounter that could leave you shaken, stirred, or in deep trouble.

Main Project Premise:

  • Ophelia recounts the story of her parents’ first meeting.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • While attempting to settle an agitated Marilyn, Ophelia “makes up” a love story – but it’s actually a very thinly veiled account of their father’s first meeting with her mother – a sweet and touching tale of a tiny social tragedy and what it sparked. She doesn’t tell her sister that this is the story of her own conception.

My Favorite Bit of Rainbow Sprinkles:

He calls her ‘The Pot of Gold at the End of The Rainbow Sprinkles.”

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Trip wanders off into bittersweet dreams of a chance encounter with a Vulcan Surprise Package.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Trip’s finally getting some sleep, now that Lizzie got him good and drunk. And who’s waiting for him in Dreamland? Why, his beautiful, cowled Vulcan Surprise Package, of course – sitting there at the table in the corner like Vulcans visited jazz clubs every Tuesday night!

Word List:

Prompt Word Donors kitndavj:

  • Mist

  • Man Cave

  • Role play

  • Stitching

  • Parchment

Favorite Bit from An Oriental Lily”:

Trip wanted a man cave to hide in, but all he’s got is Jon’s couch. But Lizzie had gotten him good and drunk on overproof rum and Corona. “Dream of that gooey cream filled eclair you’re pretending you’re not mooning over.”

“Illogical Gibberish”: #Loveuary Day Twenty-Six

Ritu from But I Smile Anyway created the #Loveuary blog hop,  which feels like a perfect time to explore the next three chapters of my Star Trek: Enterprise  TnT fan fiction story, Love and Loss  – a hundred words at a time.

I’m using word prompts for each day, randomly gathered. Prompt words appear in bold, and today’s contributors are credited at the end of the post.

Today’s drabble occurs a day or two after my previous Trip story, “Really?” Trip begins to adjust to the idea of T’Pol’s impending return.

One more thing: Standard disclaimer applies. I don’t own these characters or the world they inhabit. They just like whispering and shouting stories into my brain, which I share with you freely, as an act of love.

Illogical Gibberish”

Trip tested the wire rope swing, checked the welds on Dad’s bumper bar, tugged his sheetbends and truckie’s hitches. He’d been over-clocking himself, tap dancing around the PADD, but she was an afterburner thrusting deep under his skin.

Subcutaneous intrusion?” She was parchment-fragile in his mind. “I apologize.”

He’d taken the picture on the transport. She was wearing her jacket and heather-purple tunic. Light auburn hair, eartips peeking out. “I dumped my raw sewage on you. Phlox helping you?”

With pharmaceutical support.”

“Good. I hope the bluebird of happiness comes to perch on your shoulder, pepperpot.”

“That’s illogical gibberish, t’hy’la.”

How will Trip respond to T’Pol’s comment?

“Really?”: #Loveuary Day Twenty-Three

I’m using word prompts for each day, randomly gathered. Prompt words appear in bold, and today’s contributors are credited at the end of the post.

One more thing: Standard disclaimer applies. I don’t own these characters or the world they inhabit. They just like whispering and shouting stories into my brain, which I share with you freely, as an act of love.

Really?”

Trip stripped off his sandy boardshorts at the shower he’d rigged from 6 ft. of garden hose.

Someone whistled.

“Is this a stakeout?

“Got your aluminum shield. Here, storm the ramparts, you bloody Viking.” Malcolm offered him a staple gun.

“I was the volleyball coach.” Dad’s old bandsaw allowed a strategic screen while Trip tugged the shorts back on. “Now where’d I put the flower seeds?”

“You’ve planted, coached, and fixed with general perfectionism. But I’ve got news that might have you singing and couch jumping instead. T’Pol’s joining Starfleet.”

“Really?”

“Time to put your spaceboots on, Chief Engineer Tucker.”

How will Trip react to T’Pol’s commissioning?

“Taboo Subject”: #Loveuary Day Twenty

Ritu from But I Smile Anyway created the #Loveuary blog hop, which feels like a perfect time to explore the next three chapters of my Star Trek: Enterprise  TnT fan fiction  story, Love and Loss  – a hundred words at a time.

I’m using word prompts for each day, randomly gathered. Prompt words appear in bold, and today’s contributors are credited at the end of the post.

Today’s a special day – it’s my Accomplice’s birthday, and he’s exactly 20 years older than he was two decades ago, on the day we met in the kitchen of a restaurant that no longer exists.

Five years and a day ago, he had a life-threatening motorcycle accident. We spent his birthday that year in a haze, while he began the long process of recovering from eight broken ribs, a lacerated spleen, and a collapsed lung after hitting a deer and being thrown a hundred feet.

So, today, I understand the pain of a love threatened…

This drabble takes place just after “Bad Art.” Trip and his dad have run into Shran.

One more thing: Standard disclaimer applies. I don’t own these characters or the world they inhabit. They just like whispering and shouting stories into my brain, which I share with you freely, as an act of love.

Taboo Subject”

“How have you been, pinkskin?” Shran’s raised eyebrow stabbed at Trip’s heart. Too much like T’Pol. Damn. Now his eyes were moist.

“Well, son, I’m going to give you and your -” Trip heard the “strange” Dad never said – “friend some privacy to catch up.”

Damn again. He’d be slime if he skipped out on Shran now. Trip pasted on a faux-happy-go-lucky grin. “Can’t complain.”

“Or won’t.”

Taboo subject.” Tentacles of grief strangled the cord of love that was already wrapped around his soul. He wiped his eyes.

Shran clapped his back. “Let me buy you a drink, pinkskin.”

Bad Art: #Loveuary Day Seventeen

This drabble takes place a few days after “Well, Trip?,” my previous Trip chapter. A father-son day Trip’s not really up for takes an unexpected turn…

Bad Art

Trip wanted a Man Cave Therapy Day, an antidote for the entropy of T’Pol withdrawal; but instead Dad dragged him to the boardwalk art show. They were staring at an improbable cadmium yellow papier-mache DeLorean when a pair of blue antennae popped up on the other side.

“Shran?”

“Pinkskin?”

“Why you shifty, wily bastard! Dad, this is my friend Shran. What brings you here to paradise?”

New worlds to conquer, pinkskin.” Shran’s eyes asked questions. Trip put his focus on a macrame piece called Ambulance and Crash Test Dummy.

Bad art and a nosy friend.

He should have stayed home.

Will Shran tell Trip where he’s been, and with whom?

“Well, Trip?”: #Loveuary Day Fourteen

This drabble happens just after the last Trip story,“About T’Pol. Jon invited Trip to dinner, and is fishing for answers. Will Trip take the bait?

“Well, Trip?”

Dinner was baked potato, curried fish and carrots with honey ginger glaze. He couldn’t eat.

“Well, Trip?

Honor guide me. Shran would hate him using Andorian phrases to defend T’Pol’s hallowed ground.

“T’Pol’s mom rolled out the doormat and welcomed me. It made me miss Lizzie. Didn’t handle it well. I had to leave.”

It was true, despite the holes a forklift could drive through. It needed a flourish; a forked tongue to hide the forklift. “Now, as for the emu – there’s not enough room to ride a horse on a spaceship.

Jon groaned. “Shut up, Trip. Have some pie.

Will Trip get away with his honor, T’Pol’s secret, and some pie?

“About T’Pol”: #Loveuary Day Eleven

“About T’Pol”

“Thanks for inviting me, skipper. I brought dessert– cinnamon babka and single-malt scotch.” Trip grinned. “Have a bite and a quaff on me.”

“Thought you weren’t drinking anymore.” Jon was watching him like he was covered in warts. Guess I can’t blame him for wanting to be enlightened.

“Not tequila, anyway. And I’m just sipping.” He omitted the details of his treatment.

“Why do I get the idea you’re up to some kind of skulduggery, Trip? About the drinking, and about T’Pol?”

Trip took a deep breath. He was hogtied by Vulcan privacy, not to mention his own well-deserved shame.

How is Trip going to reassure Jon without saying anything he shouldn’t?
