“If They Had Touched” for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

So, this was going to be my month of rest, organizing, and securing loose ends after my four-month Chaostivity Marathon….

This last week was a whirlwind, though – and I expect that to carry on through the rest of the month, and beyond. While that may sound like a problem, it really, really isn’t!

It’s just that Big Things are happening in my family life, and in my husband’s small hot-sauce business. And those big things mean that he and I are going to be pretty busy as we ramp up our focus on crafting, bottling, and marketing his hot sauces.

We’ve just come up with an answer that has turned financial pressure into financial possibility, and eased a major stress point as we transition to entrepreneurship. And that entrepreneurship will now more easily be able to extend to my writing life.

I think that’s a pretty fair trade-off!

And now, for something completely different:

It’s time for another installment of my finally-getting–sassy-TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

I’ve decided to use this story, once revision gets to a point I’m comfortable with, as my initiation into Wattpad. So please don’t hesitate to let me know if something’s not working for you – it will make a better story in the long run!

Recap:

T’Pol has just left Captain Archer’s Ready Room after formally confirming her transfer from the Vulcan Consulate to Enterprise – and refusing a handshake from a human called Trip. Now, let’s see where she is, and what she’s doing.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is August 16, 2017.
  • I have 1 paragraph for you today. I added the digits of the day (1+6), then subtracted the total from the month, (8-7). And there you have it.

“If They Had Touched”

T’Pol stepped from Captain Archer’s office, and leaned against the wall, sheltered from human eyes as she attempted to adjust to her emotional chaos. The men on the other side of the bulkhead were discussing her; she could hear them, but could spare no attention for the conversation. She had been far too near accepting the hand Trip extended to her, and giving herself to whatever might follow as a result of a first physical contact. It was a certainty that, in so doing, she would have dishonored her people, and ended her service to his before it was begun. Her emotions regarding this human had proven repeatedly that they were beyond her ability to control, or even contain. There was no possibility that she would have been able to do so if they had touched in so intimate a manner.

Will T’Pol succumb to the desire to touch Trip?

Why is this desire so strong?

How will it affect her mission?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page, or go directly to my brand-new story-in-progress, “Highly Classified Mission.”new chapters posting at least twice a weekly, and hopefully more often.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

“Is That An Order?” for WIPpet Wednesday

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

So this is my month of rest, organizing, and securing loose ends after my four-month Chaostivity Marathon. So far, so good. I’ve gotten all the homeschool paperwork done until December. I’ve gotten back to a more regular (but not perfect) blogging schedule, and even added a few thousand words to my epic fantasy novel, Foul Deeds Will Rise, from the Trueborn series. I’m moving through the exercises in Prosperity for Writers, and doing more around the house and yard.

More progress is coming…but right now, we’re going out to look for the space station, which leads me to my reason for being here today…even though our attempts to find the station failed.

Recap:

Captain Jonathan Archer doesn’t want a Vulcan in his Ready Room, or his crew. But he’s got one, and Trip’s already hard at work offending her.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is August 9, 2017.
  • I have 10 paragraphs for you today. I added the digits of the year.

“Is That An Order?”

Trip plopped himself back into the chair, and Porthos hopped onto his lap. Both of them looked damned pleased with themselves. And they’d both been way too friendly with their damned Vulcan “chaperone.” Jon couldn’t very well tell Porthos that, and, even if he could make his beagle understand, he was sure to get the saddest puppy-dog eyes in the system. And that left Trip.

“What the hell was that all about?” Jon put all his frustration at being saddled with her into the question.

Dunno what you mean.” Anytime the engineer laid on the Southern accent that thick, he was trying to deflect from something.

“You just tried to shake hands with a Vulcan.”

“You said we were supposed to extend her every courtesy. Just thought extending my hand was part of the deal.” Trip shrugged. “Apparently, she doesn’t agree.”

And then some.” She’d been condescending as hell, yesterday, at Starfleet Medical. Today, she was downright ascerbic, on top of the condescension, and Jon could sense trouble brewing. Trip was playing it off like it was no big deal, but he wasn’t the kind to just let something go, and, the more challenging, the better he seemed to like it. That made him a hell of an engineer…but a liability with the damned Vulcan woman. He was bound to keep trying to get T’Pol to shake his hand, call him Trip – or maybe both.

Unless he put an end to it right now. “Trip, Vulcans don’t shake hands. I thought you knew that.”

“Why would I? I’ve never asked one to do it before.” Jon’s best friend bent his head to add, apparently to Porthos, whose ears he was scratching, “Sorry, little buddy. I don’t think she pats beagles on the head, either. So I guess we’re both out of luck on this one, unless we can figure out a way to get her to change her mind.” Porthos gave a little yip that suggested he agreed. Maybe Jon was going to have to keep him in his quarters for a while, until he could teach him not to jump on her. He’d never done that to anyone else, even as a puppy.

Well, don’t ask her again.” He caught the other man’s dimpled grin, and sighed. “I mean it, Trip. She made it clear. She’s not going to shake your hand, use your nickname, or be your friend – if Vulcans even have friends, which I seriously doubt. Let’s just try to get through the next eight days without creating an interstellar incident. You want to challenge yourself, you’ve got plenty to do in the Engine Room, or you could ask Hoshi to try to teach you Klingon. But don’t ask Sub-Commander T’Pol for any more handshakes. We don’t need to antagonize her.”

“Is that an order, sir?”

“You bet your ass it is.”

Will Trip obey Jon’s order?

Will Pothos jump on T’Pol again?

What’s T’Pol doing right now?

Any guesses?

Trekkish Growth; August 8, 2017

Hey there!

I’ve had a Trek-centric beginning to my week – and that makes me a very happy Shan. Actually, I’m purring like a contented tribble!

Sunday was the #AllStarTrek #Trektacular on the Heroes and Icons channel. For those not in the know, they do a 5-hour block 6 nights a week, with an episode from each existing Trek series (and, on Sundays, they add an hour of Star Trek: The Animated Series, as well). There’s a live (and lively!) Twitter chat that goes along with the airing, and I’ve found my “Trek tribe” there, which essentially means I can stop driving my family nuts talking about this stuff.

This Sunday, though, H&I ran non-stop Trek from 12pm-3am. There were many documentaries I hadn’t seen before, and enough Leonard Nimoy to make me cry a time or three from the joy of seeing him again. I watched most of the fifteen hours, and chatted for the majority of what I watched.

Monday night, a few of kept on chatting after Enterprise (the final installment in the line-up, and my favorite Trek series), and the conversation was wide-ranging and free-flowing, inspiring my writing mind in all kinds of ways….which showed up Tuesday, as I dug out and polished the first chapter of a fan fiction story I wrote a couple of years ago, now titled, “Highly Classified Mission.” It’s getting positive reviews over on fanfiction.net, and will serve as the base of my StoryADay September TnT drabbles.

My mind is humming with ideas that extend beyond sci-fi…Star Trek has been a conduit to other writing for me since I was 13, and indulging my passion for it makes me a better writer – and a better human, too.

Do you indulge your non-writing passions?
If you do, do you find they feed your writing?

If you don’t….why not give it a try?

  • Trueborn Series: Add 3,333 words/week to Foul Deeds Will Rise (until draft completed). 3,333/3,333. Primary goal COMPLETED for this week.

The communication is thankfully brief, and, once it’s concluded, T’Pol moves away from her work station. Perhaps it would be wisest to begin reviewing the encrypted information that accompanied the transmission, but she will admit to herself that she is agitated at the thought of doing so. Instead she brings forth her table, her cushions, and her candle, and attempts to meditate.

Each time her eyes close, however, there is a sense of – of something. She can’t name the emotions she’s experiencing. Nothing in her training has prepared her to do so. She has been fascinated by the diverse range of words the humans she lives and serves with give to their emotional states; but she often doesn’t understand the emotions to which they are referring. She’s been conditioned, from infancy, to suppress emotion, to separate it from thought and action, rather than to label and define and allow it into every action and thought, as her human colleagues do.

Perhaps it would be useful to be a human now. A human could feel freely, and define the emotions. A human might also know how to deal with them. A human wouldn’t be compelled by duty to their world to pursue a fugitive they were frightened to pursue.

  • Story A Day September: Choose themes for main stories (Solemates, my November NaNoWriMo project) and TnT fanfiction drabbles; plot to the degree possible. Put out general call for word prompt lists. I chose my theme for Solemates (it’s anything relating to both characters’ backstories and eventual meeting) and the TnT story to create drabbles for: it’s Highly Classified Mission,” the original segments of which were written a couple years back for #StaD, so perfect for developing there! Reread story as-is; made a polishing pass of Chapter One; and posted to fanfiction.com. Will finish submitting before September 1; I’ll add the request for words there. Primary goal; good progress.

  • Other Platforms: Spend 3 hours/week with my Facebook Writer page; Instagram; Pinterestand Patreon. Continue with Twitter #writingcrew and #AllStarTrek sprints/chats regularly. Dabble in other social media (LinkedIn, Medium, Quora, Wattpad, etc.) 1 hour/week. .5/3 hours; mostly rereading/sharing Patreon page, one post to Instagram. Stretch goal; some progress.

  • Chef Bluebeard’s Flavor Enhancement Sauces: Assist my Accomplice with his business 11 hours each week. 3, 75/11 hours; mostly at market; some mellow promotion. Primary goal.

  • Personal professional Development: Finish reading/exercises from Prosperity for Writers. Complete my writing business plan using this excellent article by Angela Ackerman as a guide. PSW: 73% read; 53% exercises, which take a bit longer to complete. Business Plan: Step 4/7 in progress from June. Secondary goal; good progress.

  • Unschooltending: Draft kids’ 2017-2018 IHIPs (Individualized Home Instruction Plans), due Friday, August 4, and draft fourth quarter reports (due September 15), since those are easier to do in conjunction with each other; submit Lise’s test results, which got lost in the hustle. Sent fourth quarter reports a month early; mailed Lise’s test scores. Goal COMPLETED!

  • Hometending: Complete 3 hometending sprints/day 5x/week; an additional sprint in all rooms except the kids’ (since they don’t want me in their rooms); and 3 yardtending sprints/week. 0/5 hometending) but 3 partial); 1/3 yardtending sprints complete.

  • Selftending: Spend time with my beloveds, friends, and myself; get at least one hour of physical activity 5x/week, and two hours of strenuous activity weekly (including Baby Steps to 5K); meditate and journal 8x/week. Activity 1/5; Strenuous: 45 minutes/2 hours. Meditate/journal 3/8.

Down, Boy for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

It’s Wednesday again. Saturday was my birthday – a low-key day. I don’t do parties, since my birthday falls only four days after the anniversary of my son’s death. A quiet, personal recognition of the day is all I can handle.

Last week, I wrote about how getting through Elijah’s Days felt like the moments after running a marathon. This week, I’ve got that feeling again, in a different way, and for a different reason.

The Chaostivity Marathon – four straight months of writing challenges – ended with July, and I have August off before the Chaostivity 10K kicks off with Story A Day September, on through OctPoWriMo, and then on to the main stage of the race – NaNoWriMo in November.

So this is my month of rest, organizing, and securing loose ends.

But, of course, there’s room for Trip and T’Pol…so let’s get to it, shall we?

Recap:

Trip’s Vulcan Surprise Package would never have turned her back on him, but the snippy Vulcan woman in Jon Archer’s Ready Room just did – and rejected his friendly handshake, too. Now what?

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is August 2, 2017.
  • I have 10 sentences for you today. I added the digits of the month and date.

Down, Boy!

Porthos was outgentlemaning his master, with his front feet right up on her hip, offering her a friendly doggy hello. Trip couldn’t see much of her expression as she twisted a bit to look at what might be her very first-ever beagle, but the fact that she reacted at all made him grin, even though it stung that she’d rejected his handshake and dismissed him as though she didn’t even remember him, like she’d gone back into the Consulate that Tuesday night and never given Trip Tucker another thought.

Where was the lovely young woman who had swayed to the music, stared into his eyes, and – well, that first magical night when Miss Pointed Ears Under That Cowl stalked into his life, things had happened between them he still didn’t understand, all these months later.

But now she got the hell out of here as though she couldn’t wait to make her escape from the distasteful illogic of him, Jon, and even Porthos, who had to be the cutest dog on any starship.

Trip might think he’d imagined the whole thing, or had the wrong Vulcan.

Except for the way she smelled. Her scent was even more potent than he remembered. It filled the small space, and it was definitely doing things to him that Jon would notice if he looked, and Trip sure as hell didn’t want to try to explain that.

Down, boy!

Not sure he could follow his own order, Trip plunked himself back down in the chair, grateful when Porthos decided to jump up into his lap and give him something to hide behind.

Did Jon notice Trip’s response?

Will Trip find out about T’Pol’s physical response to him?

Will Porthos win over the Vulcan scientist?

Any guesses?

The Manner of a Predator for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

It’s Wednesday again, and, again, later than I wanted it to be. My only reason is that today is a very awkward day, after a very busy week of learning and life, and the anniversary of our second child’s death in infancy.

It’s like the huge staggering fatigue and gulping breaths after a marathon has ended, and now I’m feeling tired, scattered, and emotionally frayed and a little flimsy. Fortunately for me, Trip and T’Pol are a great way to bring myself back to a more stable place. And so, here I am, with a late-ish entry into the WIPpeting for this week.

I was better at visiting last week, but answering comments is still slow going, and I still need to address my two biggest and most time-sensitive obligations – the current batch of state-required homeschool reporting, and the short story revision for my contribution to the Dark and Bitter anthology.

Right now, though –

It’s time for another installment of my finally-getting–sassy-TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

Recap:

T’Pol has turned her back on Trip, the human man who compels her. Now what?

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is July 26, 2017.
  • I have 3 paragraphs for you today. Why? Because yesterday was the anniversary of my baby’s death, and Saturday is my birthday – and, in case that didn’t make it clear, 3 is my favorite number.

The Manner of a Predator

Captain Jonathan Archer had openly menaced her, but it was the other human male who presented the far greater danger. Should the Captain attempt to carry out his implied threat, he would learn the error of that action. In contrast, she had experienced much agitation where Trip was concerned. He had engendered numerous questions for which she had no answers – and also an array of inexplicable physical symptoms, such as respiration accelerated by 4%, circulation by 8%, and the tremors that had begun in her fingertips, as they had the night the strange music seemed to bind them together.

His scent rose above Captain Archer’s and that of the creature he’d called “porthos’. It was both highly agitating and paradoxically calming, allowing her to respond to Captain Archer without truly attending to the conversation. Her focus remained upon the man standing behind her – on Trip. She knew it was not possible that she perceived emotional energy she believed to he his; a tangled complexity she couldn’t comprehend, but longed to explore.

Suddenly, she was under attack from an unexpected direction – the canid quadruped jumped up and placed its anterior legs upon one of hers, and now it was staring at her, the appendage in which its spinal cord ended moving rhythmically, sniffing with the manner of a predator.

Is T’Pol in danger from Porthos?

Is Porthos in danger from T’Pol?

Will Archer try to make good on his mysterious threat?

And what is Trip feeling about all this?

Any guesses?

It Was Impossible for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

It’s Wednesday again, and, again, I missed most of the other posters, and haven’t answered comments. I keep meaning to do those things, but life has been a whirlwind lately. It’s a little like I’m at a buffet, and someone else keeps bringing me plates of food to add to the heaping one I’ve already got in front of me.

There is just so much going on right now! Most of it is new, and involves a lot of learning how to do things I wasn’t even aware of a year ago. My brain and my mind are full, and so is my life.

I will get back to visiting and answering comments…things are finally getting to a point where I can see them leveling off ahead…after this weekend, there will be an easing, and, within the next two weeks, I’ll have addressed my two biggest and most time-sensitive obligations – the current batch of state-required homeschool reporting, and the short story revision for my contribution to the Dark and Bitter anthology.

Until then, though, things may be a bit hit-or-miss where my visiting and responding is concerned. I ask forgiveness, and patience – I will be making up for the lost time. August is slated to be a much quieter month for me, and I’m not looking for things to fill it up with!

Right now, though –

It’s time for another installment of my finally-getting–sassy-TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. Recap:

T’Pol longs to touch the human called Trip, with whom she has some personal history…but her duty requires that she objectify the humans. Will she give in, or follow orders?

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is July 19, 2017.
  • I have 10 sentences for you today – adding the digits of the date, and the fact that it’s ten days to my birthday. =)

It Was Impossible

She must protect him. She must protect them.

As for what they had shared, it was impossible. Other than an awareness of other Vulcans, and deeper awareness of one’s family, hers was not a telepathic species.

She was not related to this or any human. They had never touched; other than a few words immediately before she returned to the safety of the Consulate, they had never spoken. Those words didn’t constitute a conversation.

Therefore, logically, they had shared nothing but a commonality of location for a brief time on a single Tuesday night fourteen months, three weeks, and five days previously. Her desire to touch her paired fingers to his, to experience the blending of their bioelectric signatures, was illogical, and must be repressed, if she was to fulfill her orders here.

T’Pol turned back toward Jonathan Archer, and clutched quivering hands behind her, the scars on her fingertips still throbbing with the urge to touch the human called Trip.

How will Trip interpret T’Pol’s lack of response?

Will she be able to protect this human crew?

Will they allow her to?

Any guesses?

Precise and Inviolable for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

Well, I’m getting to this about 12 hours earlier than I did last week – but I may have to sleep before I finish it, and I haven’t been great about visiting. I’m making that a goal for this week – to visit everyone who posts a WIPpet this week.

But, fir now, let’s just get on with it, because I’d love to get this posted before I let dreams have me.

Recap:

Trip has just made his informal introduction, and offered his hand to the new Science Officer. Now, we get to see how T’Pol responds…

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is July 12, 2017.
  • I have 12 sentences for you today – one for each day of the month, so far.

Precise and Inviolable

“Trip. I’m called Trip.” There was something in his eyes, his voice, his extended arm.

Openness. The offer of connection offset the Captain’s obvious prejudices.

“I’ll try to remember that,” she said. It would be most agreeable to tell him that she hadn’t forgotten it for a moment of the last fourteen months, three weeks, and five days. The effort not to accept the gesture, or return it, required all of her discipline, and left her badly in need of privacy and meditation against the powerful impulse to heedlessly take hold of that hand, and give herself to whatever intimacies would follow.

However, her orders from the High Command were precise and inviolable. It was her responsibility to protect this Terran crew. If she touched him now, she was certain she wouldn’t be able to objectify him as she must if she was to fulfill that duty. Her entire body was quivering slightly, attuned to his mind and his scent, and longing to share as they had in the restaurant when the strange music played.

Will T’Pol surrender to her impulses?

What will happen if she does?

If she doesn’t?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page, or go directly to my Story A Day May drabbles  – a loosely-connected serial of bite-sized, 100 word stories written to prompts.

Read one, all, or anywhere in between – these are the seeds of longer stories to come, and each one has its own tiny little twist.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!
