“You Wouldn’t Dare” for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

But right now, it’s time for another installment of my TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

I’ve decided to use this story, once revision gets to a point I’m comfortable with, as my intiation into Wattpad. So please don’t hesitate to let me know if something’s not working for you – it will make a better story in the long run!

Recap:

Trip’s facing the music – in the form of Ensign Hoshi Sato, who has her own tune to play…

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is October 4, 2017.
  • I have 4 paragraphs for you today.

“You Wouldn’t Dare”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Want to test that theory, Trip?”

“ That’s Commander Tucker to you. And I can order you not to say anything to my mother about what happens on the Bridge. I’m your superior officer.”

“I’ve done my homework, Trip. A Vulcan High Command rank of Sub-Commander supersedes yours, in case you didn’t know. So what you were doing out there was technically insubordination. But you’re right. Maybe it’s not your mother I should speak to. I do have a direct line to Admiral Forest -”

Will Hoshi make good on her threat?

Can Trip dissuade her?

What’s T’Pol up to?

Any guesses?

Something to Say for WIPpet Wednesday

Recap:

Trip walks away from his Vulcan Surprise Package – and straight into the music he’s got to face…

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is September 27, 2017.
  • I have 4 paragraphs for you today – I subtracted the first digit of the day from the second, incorrectly, because I have a bit of a cold and my brain is a little muzzy. (72 only equals 4 in my addled brain).

Something to Say

Hoshi Sato was standing there when Trip got to the Situation Room, and the way she had her arms crossed over her chest, and her foot tapping, said that he’d gotten in trouble with her. They’d become friends way back when she was trying to decide whether to take Jon’s offer of joining Starfleet. It wasn’t going to matter to her that he was her commanding officer, if she had something to say.

“What the hell are you thinking, Commander Tucker?” Her voice was a quiet hiss of fury; it reminded him of the way Miss “My Name Is T’Pol”’s eyes had somehow flashed anger at him even though nothing in her expression seemed to have changed by so much as a micrometer.

“I don’t know what you mean.” He gave her an aww-shucks shrug and grin, hoping she was young enough and complacent enough that she would let it go.

“Like hell you don’t, sir. She hasn’t done anything to any of us; she’s only been aboard for 8 minutes. It’s not fair to antagonize her just because she got assigned here, and she happens to be Vulcan. She can’t help who she is, or how humans feel about her people. Play nice, Commander Tucker, or I’m going to tell your mother when we get home.”

Will Trip play nice?

Will Hoshi tattle on him?

Will T’Pol’s second 8 minutes be as eventful as the first?

Any guesses?

Attempt to Adapt for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

This has been a quieter week for me, but we’re ramping up for another growth cycle in our small business, so there is plenty for me to do. Honestly, there’s more to do than I can do, so I’m portioning it out, trying to find a workable blend of time for my own pursuits (fitness, writing, just being me), family interests (driving practice, homeschooling, hometending, talking, and the like), and the business (marketing and branding, administration, working markets and events).

But right now, it’s time for another installment of my TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage – and peeks behind-the-scenes on that first mission.

I’ve decided to use this story, once revision gets to a point I’m comfortable with, as my intiation into Wattpad. So please don’t hesitate to let me know if something’s not working for you – it will make a better story in the long run!

Recap:

T’Pol is inordinately aware of the Chief Engineer…will she be able to tend to her duty.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is September 20, 2017.
  • I have 2 paragraphs for you today – I subtracted the second digit of the day from the first (2-0 = 2).

Attempt to Adapt

“I’ll try to remember that,” she answered, as she had in the Ready Room. Logically, such details as his respiratory rate were of no concern to her. There should be no uneasy sensation in her digestive tract in relation to Commander “Call Me Trip” Tucker. At the earliest opportunity, she would meditate to deal with the agitation this human caused her. Until then, she must attempt to adapt.

Decided, T’Pol began a cursory examination of the science station. But she couldn’t focus on her duties. She remained in this heightened sense of awareness, her entire body tingling, until the moment he turned away.

Will T’Pol be able to adapt?

Why is her body tingling?

And why did Trip stare at her so long?

Any guesses?

Hard News for #StoryADay/#SoCS

Hi there, and welcome to my joint #StoryADay/ Stream of Consciousness Saturday post.

The #SoCS prompt for this week is “vol.” I used three “vol” words, and a list of prompt words from a worksheet created by my friend and NaNoWriMo ML, Shannon Kauderer. Those are listed before the TnT drabble. I confess to editing that one to maintain the 100 word limit, so you can consider it a bonus if you’d like.

The first post is completely unedited.

I haven’t been posting my #StoryADay writing on a daily basis, but it fit so well here, I couldn’t resist. Learn more about StoryADay September 2017.

“You Have News”

(Preparation for my upcoming Trueborn series epic fantasy series WIP, Solemates.)

“So, sister, you have news you have nay shared with me yet.”

Niaan might have been surprised, once, at the ease with which Rachyl discerned such things, when she had thought them camouflaged and safe from encroachment. But she was sitting on cushions beside a voluminous planting of sensates. She could nay read any but the most basic of the messages the plants made, but Rachyl tended to the plants as to dear friends, and they spoke to her even if she didn’t touch them.

“Are you going to tell it, or hoard it to yourself like you did that fur when you were seven sunrounds, and dragged it into the Great Hall, and would nay let any other touch it or take it from your jaws?”

“Nay – I will tell it. I want none of the flogging Mother gave me when I fell asleep with it.”

“As though I would flog you for simply being as you are, sister. Come, now, you know me better than that. Besides, your fangs are far sharper, and your Huntskills far stronger, than they were then. I value my skin too much to wish it punctured. Even more my breathsource and bloodsource, sister. So, if you will nay tell me now, I will wait on your choice, and hold to my own wonderings.” Rachyl sipped her tea sedately; as though nothing could ever disturb her.

Mayhap it could nay. She was a fine healer, and had been so since she was a child. It was she who had made and applied the salve after Mother’s flogging.

But, if there was that which could disturb her, it was like as nay the news Niaan had to share. It had been so long, near to her lifetime, and many tended to think she had only imagined it in some fever-sickness long past, and that she was merely a fool who chased after dartwings, and would nay release the dessicated carcass of a prey long since dead.

She set her drinking bowl on the flat rock beside her, and studied her sister closely for a moment. “Kaivelt is coming to me, Rachyl.”

  10. brother
  11. prickly

The Hard Way

(Exploration for upcoming chapters of my Star Trek: Enterprise TnT fan fiction story, “Highly Classified Mission,” which is based on S2E7: “The Seventh.” All previous and subsequent Story A Day September Drabbles can (eventually) be found on my fanfiction.net page.)

Trip pokes at the flaky croissant, dips it in cherry jam – then puts it back on his plate, uneaten. He stares at the page on the PADD without really seeing it. The print swims; he still hasn’t slept.

Bored with playing a volatile, domineering tyrant so soon?” Malcolm doesn’t look tired enough. There’s still a bounce in his step. He’s well-groomed. “Too finicky for Chef’s breakfast, too, I see.”

Trip is prickly. Malcolm’s too damned voluble. Trip’s brother taught him well how to embarrass someone, and and Malcolm Bloody Reed’s about to learn a trick or two – the hard way.

Growth and Shiny Things: September 13, 2017

Hey there!

After the crazy-happy-busy week I detailed in my Sunday (well, posted Monday) update, the week has settled into something that’s not really a lull, but definitely the wake of that mad ROWing!

It’s a quietly productive time fueled by the shift in the seasons and the air, the late night and early morning fogs, the cooling of the nights and the softening light of the days, the songs of the crickets and the cry of the blue jays. Things are being born in me: autumn is an intensely creative time for me, and I tend to be abustle with tending goals and plans for a long New York winter by the time September is midway through… which it very nearly is, as I type this in the last minutes of Wednesday morning.

It can be tempting for me to want to charge ahead with each new plan or idea or Shiny Thing as it arises, particularly as the vibrancy of color intensifies, and the cool shifts to a frost-edged chill…

There’s a reason for my September mantra:

Keep It Simple.

Much as I might want to add new goals, and chase after the Shinies of life…I’m going to stick with what I have. I’ll remind myself as needed that these goals were the Shinies as I moved into the month, and that I set them with intention, in service to long-term contributions. I do have a plan to add one thing to the upcoming Round 3/Round 4 break – but it’s a thing that will make all the other things easier to attain.

Rather than adding goals, I’ve decided to indulge my desire for new Shinies by seeing some goals in a new way, and by embracing some new experiences, large and small. And, of course, by getting out into this lovely weather regularly, rather than spending all my time at the keyboard (which is essential to a writing career, but certainly not all there is to experience in life!).

So, here we go…on to my Keep It Simple September Roughly Midmonth Update!

Do you find yourself creatively energized by cooler weather?

Do you have autumn where you live?

  • Notes: For clarity, only goals I engaged with this session appear in this update.  Comprehensive goals lists can be found below. Standard disclaimer applies on Trek excerpts – I neither own nor profit from these characters.

  • September goals

  • Round Three goals (updated)

  • 2017 Goals

  • #oneword for 2017

  • Story A Day September : Create one 333 word story for Trueborn; Solemates, and one 100-word TnT fan fiction drabble each day, to challenge prompts. Day Twelve finished for both, Primary goal; on target for the month.

Excepted from: “Far Past Time:”

“It’s about time.”

“It is far past time.”

“Blame me, Jim – I took too long getting into my dress uniform.”

Excepted from: “Triaxian Silk:”

I caress the cloth -Triaxian silk, in an appealing rainbow of color. I worked hard for a whole night to make the deal that bought me these, but I figure if I get to see her wearing it even once, I have made a profit.

Excepted from: S48: “I Will Hold You:”

Niaan woke alone, and chilled despite the warmth of her borrowed furs. Kilyp was nay here; she must have slept overlong, and he, in the manner she knew so well, had gone to tend to her fastbreaking and morning brew, as though she could nay tend to it herself.

  • Story A Day September: Continue call for TnT word prompt lists. Plot as needed to achieve drafting goals. A writing group friend mentioned having several 100-word prompt lists. She’s shared them with me; I’m now word-rich, and shouldn’t need more! Minor plotting ongoing. Primary goal; good progress.

  • Blogging: Revise/maintain regular blogging schedule for September. Outline/draft working schedule for October/November. Finalized my schedule for September (finally!). Made up #SoCS. WIPpet and this post in progress. Primary goal; solid progress.

  • Hometending: Complete 1.5 hours of hometending/week. 1/1.5 hours.

  • Selftending: Spend time with my beloveds, friends, and myself; get at least 8 hours physical activity/week, (including finishing Baby Steps to 5K/ beginning Run 5K programs); meditate and journal 8x/week. Activity: 2.9/8 hours, including Run 5K and tai chi class (I really, really missed it!). Journal; 3/8; meditate 3/8.

“My Name is T’Pol” for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

There are maybe things I could say about this past week – but I’ve said many of them already. So I guess I’ll just get down to business….

It’s time for another installment of my TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise.

Recap:

T’Pol is having difficulty adjusting to duty on a human ship – or to the Chief Engineer, who just informed her he’s forgotten her name.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is September 13, 2017.
  • I have 23 sentences for you today – I added digit of the day (13), to the digits of the year (2+0+1+7=1o).

“My Name is T’Pol”

“My name is T’Pol.”

“Cap’n’s orders are that Sub-Commander T’Pol here is to be extended every courtesy. Now, I know none of us are too busy to drop anything we happen to be doing any time she’s got a question, so it shouldn’t be a problem, right?”

He stepped up to the console beside T’Pol. His nearness, and the rancid edge of his scent, were a most disquieting combination. “May I please be excused, ma’am? I’d like to get that viewing table up and running before we launch, and it might help if I stop by the Engine Room and wave at folks – but, of course, if you need someone to hold your chair for you-”

“I require nothing of you, Commander.” Except, perhaps, that he take his agitating presence elsewhere.

“Common courtesy is to thank someone when they offer you their help, T’Pol. And to accept handshakes. And to call people by the names they want to be called.”

“Human courtesy, Commander Tucker. My people’s customs differ -” she considered how to broach the topic of what he had offered, and what it meant among Vulcans, but that was a discussion which required a level of privacy the current circumstances wouldn’t accommodate.

“Was there supposed to be an end to that sentence – cause I’ve got a lot of work to do, but I wouldn’t want it reported to the High Command that I interrupted their chaperone before she was done preaching at me.”

“Vulcan customs differ significantly, Commander. On my world, your action would be considered – most discourteous.”

“Well, in case you haven’t noticed, this isn’t your world. So, if you’re going to hitch a ride with us, maybe you’d better stow your customs, unless you’re going to tell us about them ahead of time. And I’d be damned willing to bet all of your customs are classified. So maybe you’d better go ahead and look up the database on etiquette, because none of us are observers. We’ve all got too damned much to do to nursemaid you for the next eight days, Sub-Commander T’Pol.”

The cadence of his voice shifted as he spoke, becoming nearly 10% faster, in addition to gaining a staccato pattern that affected his respiratory rate.

Will T’Pol take the time to learn human customs?

Will she ever tell Trip exactly what handshakes imply in her culture?

Will these two ever learn to get along with each other?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page,  or go directly to my brand-new story-in-progress, “Highly Classified Mission.” – new chapters posting about once a week.

Multi-Directional Growth: September 10, 2017

Hey there!

It feels like only yesterday I was welcoming the new month – and now it’s a third of the way over. Maybe it’s really flying by that fast, or maybe it’s that my life’s been even busier than during a very busy summer?

Sooner or later, I’m going to have a slow month…or maybe just a slow week. I know it will happen – but this doesn’t seem to be the week or the month for it.

The highlights include a new driver –  who of course has a lot to learn, and wants me to be the one to facilitate that –  and changes and growth in our still-newborn cottage business.

Oh, and there’s changes happening in the way I look at my life, productivity, my place in the business, and my writing…

There’ll be more on those changes in Round Four. For now, let’s just say I’m growing, and, though it’s a bit scary and a lot uncomfortable, it’s a good kind of growth, and discomfort is a chance for learning…

Which makes me glad for my September mantra:

Keep It Simple.

How are you growing this month?

  • Story A Day September: Create one 333 word story for Trueborn; Solemates, and one 100-word TnT fan fiction drabble each day, to challenge prompts. Day Nine finished for both, although I. Primary goal; up to date.
  • Trueborn Series: Add 2,222 words/week to Trueborn: Foul Deeds Will Rise, until complete. 2,232/2,222 words. Secondary goal COMPLETED for this week.

That the Canivaarii had a hunt that might bring harm to Niaan was a risk that must be accepted, in the quest for his own quarry. But, if Vaara proved the stronger –

That stopped him, and sent the chill of the water, down from the heights of the Snowsdeep Mountains, into his soul. He had nay considered that – that Niaan might trespass the Kai’s holdings, and lose in a battle with Vaara.

That would end all his plans, before they were well begun.

  • Kifo Island Series: Add 3,333 words/week to The Last House (until draft completed). 2,050/ 3,333 words. Stretch goal; solid progress.

Maybe that’s why she and Tim had worked. He didn’t know anything at all about that part of her life, or how fast she’d been willing, once upon a time, to drop her pants for anyone who’d let her get at what was in theirs. It didn’t matter whether they were men or women – or even how many there were, sometimes.

It was only about the empty place. Only now, years later, did she see the truth.

  • Story A Day September: Continue call for TnT word prompt lists. Plot as needed to achieve drafting goals. More simmering than plotting, but still getting words. Primary goal COMPLETED for this week.

T’Pol moved to the console he indicated, and sat on the chair anchored to it. It was unsettling to do so; most Vulcan duty stations were designed for standing use. Kaiidth. It was as it was. She would adjust to it, and to the unspecified discomfort of the furnishing, which had been designed for a human occupant. Neither of these discomforts were of any significance to this mission. She would be aboard for only eight days; it would be inefficient and illogical to expect the station to be altered for her benefit.

  • Explore ten of the sites I have in my various email feeds; choose 3 for further exploration. Saved five contest sites to Pocket for further exploration; 5/10 for Step 1. Secondary goal; good progress.

  • Blogging: Revise/maintain regular blogging schedule for September. Outline/draft working schedule for October/November. Missed #SoCS (may post Sunday) and #8sunday this week. WIPpet Wednesday; drafted #weekend coffee share; checked #SoCS prompt/simmering. Primary goal; some progress.

  • Connecting: Visit at least 3 posters/week from every hop/challenge I participate in. Visit at least two other Story A Day posters/day, on average. Touch base with other social media platforms at least once weekly. Visited all posters on the #ROW80 Facebook page for the most current update. Pinterest; Instagram. Stretch goal; a bit of progress.

  • Chef Bluebeard’s Flavor Enhancement Sauces: Assist my Accomplice with his business 15 hours each week. 15.5/15 hours; shopped for trim materials for gift buckets, set up prototypes; began designing magnets; Tugboat Roundup Day 1. Primary goal EXCEEDED for this week.

  • Va-Va-Video Course: Complete the three week session, and keep current with the Facebook Page 3 times/week. Skimmed Facebook page again; saved resources, added an app; checked out Challenges #2 and #3;staging/planning for #2 . Stretch goal; modest progress.

  • Hometending: Complete 1.5 hours of hometending/week. 120 min./1.5 hours. Goal EXCEEDED for this week!

  • Selftending: Spend time with my beloveds, friends, and myself; get at least 8 hours physical activity/week, (including finishing Baby Steps to 5K/ beginning Run 5K programs); meditate and journal 8x/week. Activity: 7.92/8 hours. Journal; 7/8; meditate 8/8. Very good progress.
