Building the Ending: March 19, 2017

Hey there!

It’s the penultimate Sunday update of my round, which officially ends Thursday (Next Sunday will be my final wrap-up of Round One goals). So it’s a perfect time for me to assess the buffet I selected at the beginning of the month, and narrow my focus to those things which have become my priorities for the remainder of the round, (then, by extension, the month, since that’s how I lay out my goals.  But, before I dive into that, here’s a little peek at what I’ve been writing this week:

Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2)

What have you done?!” Shrill. So shrill it stabbed through her ears and into her mind. She was Kai, now – so the shrill voice must be screaming at her.

(Loveuary Drabble Expansion Project)

* Standard disclaimer applies; I neither own nor profit from this labor of love in any pecuniary sense – it just feeds my soul!

“While the Big Three are away, the ensigns will play,” she said, lifting her glass, which made it a toast, and a statement of intent.

He was under attack by a superior invasion force. For a second, Travis wondered if he should go to Red Alert. Then Hoshi gave a quick tug to one of her laces, and he was overwhelmed.

Building With #WinterStormStella: March 15, 2017

Hey there!

~Waves snowy glove; realizes I’m still holding the snow shovel…~

Yup,you could say it snowed. There’s been over a foot of the white stuff. My Accomplice got the day off, so he, Miah, and I tag-teamed the removal. =)

Here’s a pair of teasers (No snow; I promise!):

Foul Deeds Will Rise:

  • They were sent to observe the Kai’s Keep and village, and to attempt to protect those of the Tribeless who are unable to tend to their own safety. Tacivaar -” She stopped and swallowed, but her scent held a snarl of emotion for the Huntleader.

A Backdrop of Stars *Chapter Two Revision): * Standard disclaimer applies; I neither own nor profit from this labor of love in any pecuniary sense – it just feeds my soul!

  • I’m an ass? You’re taking advantage of a bereaved woman – what the hell were you doing with her, during all that leave time, Trip? Did finding out about that little girl Paxton created give you some big ideas, or just ammunition to try to convince T’Pol to sit on your lap?”

So, what do you do when the weather grounds you?

Are you more creative, or more likely to nap?
Or maybe something completely different?

Writing:

  • Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2): Reread existing material; complete draft (10/50 scenes). Write 6,666 words/week till complete (by March 31). Primary goal – adapted. Scene 41/50 in progress; 3,364/6,666 words. Also read outline notes for Scenes 42-45, so I can simmer. Spent most of Sunday-Tuesday a bit behind, but now ahead by a whiskersbreadth.

Plotting:

  • Kifo Island: Complete The Story Toolkit for April novel; flesh out with pages from The Writer’s Coloring Book. Flesh out AeonTimeline.  File new series bible materials. Primary goal adapted. Character Worksheets: Protagonist; Antagonist; Supporting Character. New materials filed as completed. Protagonist Character Arc in progress: p. 4/7; I’ll also do an arc for the antagonist. Overall: Step 7/22 complete.

Revision:

  • The IDIC Romance: Progress with revisions for On Any Tuesday Night (was First Contact, With Jazz), as I work through lessons 2- 3 of Holly Lisle’s Revision Course. Continue revisions for A Backdrop of Stars  1-3. Primary goal. OATN Worksheets: p 9/82 (Scene 3) in progress– Will pick up once I have a completed ABOS rewrite draft. 2,924 words/ 707 new for Chapter Two rewrite draft.

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge: Complete and schedule all posts by March 31; make page on shanjeniah.blog; write theme reveal post and schedule for reveal date still TBD (keep eyes open for this). Secondary goal. Adapted goal: Have all materials scheduled and ready to launch by March 18. Week Four (NS; April 17-22): Formatting/links/logo/images for P post in progress(4/19). Also downloaded letter icons for each Week 4 day to appropriate folder. (Overall, 7/26 posts scheduled at site; moving along nicely now).

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Draft, proof, and submit second quarter reports, due March 15. Create Flickr portfolios for this school year. Primary goal. Both portfolios created; gradually adding the pics already on Flickr, but this goal is officially COMPLETED!

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. One 27 thing fling on porch and/or yard each week. 33 General Hometending rounds weekly. Secondary goal. Living room complete. Bedroom: 2/3. General: 19/33.
  • Photo digitalization: Scan 27 travel photos per week. Tertiary goal. I finished this week’s stack, and decided to go ahead and do next week’s, which was the final batch….so this is now COMPLETED!

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Primary goal. Conversation; business stuff; Roosevelt documentary;  flirting; canoodling.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group. Tertiary goal. Moved notes from author into separate document, so I can be sure to address all her points of concern in my critique. Restructured notes so I can access them smoothly; took notes in my journal; working on transcribing them.

Selftending:

  • Journal six mornings and four evenings each week. Meditate six mornings and three evenings weekly. Primary goal. Morning: 3/6 journal/ meditation. Evening: 2/4 journal; 2/3 meditation.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 9 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. 99 minutes: 3/5; 111 minutes: 2/2; Strenuous:1 hour; 45 minutes/9 hours; shoveling snow.

  • Smart Change: Reread Chapters 3 and 4/ complete/worksheets; create an approach plan, going forward. Tertiary goal. Reread the worksheet I began a couple of weeks ago. Had a bit of an epiphany. Reread current and next section of book; revised broad goal to be more specific and reflective of my purpose.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Draft CV and revise. Reviewed what I have; began making notes, and draft a cover letter, to direct what I want to include in this CV. Designed a letterhead; that will help me see this as a serious project rather than an indulgence. Journaled some notes on what I’m looking for and how to approach it; began transcribing to laptop.

March can’t seem to decide whether it wants fleece or a mane! After a day or two in the 70s, we were hovering near zero (Fahrenheit, not Celsius!) on Saturday, and today is expected to be cold as well. A bit of a  warmup on Monday, then maybe snow….and there might be a LOT of it!

Building An Independent Adult: March 8, 2017

Hey there!

Before we get into today’s update, I’d love to chat for a couple of minutes. First, I want to salute all women everywhere, and all men who treat us as the equals we are. Whether you’re striking, or going about your normal life, or something else, I’m thinking of you, and celebrating you, today.

I’m also celebrating my son, who told me on Monday that he hasn’t thought of himself as a kid for about a year now. We were out doing errands, and the conversation included his plans for the future, what he’s learning, music he enjoys, and more. Before we left the house, he helped me rescue a sparrow who had gotten trapped on our enclosed porch, and was too frightened to see the open door.

Then, today, when one of the kitchen sink drains was clogged, he decided to explore basic plumbing.

It’s amazing, seeing him taking on adult challenges, undaunted. He’s got one foot in the adult world, and one in childhood. He’s breathtaking. =D

It doesn’t seem so long ago – but long enough for him to be a head TALLER than me now!

If you’re a parent, have you ever found yourself quite suddenly looking at one of your children in an entirely new light?

If you aren’t a parent, have you had that kind of perception shift with a character?

Do you intend to do anything to observe International Women’s Day?

Writing:

  • Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2): Reread existing material; complete draft (10/50 scenes). Primary goal. Reread: Scene 15/40 complete and I’m sooo glad I’m taking a revision class, because this isn’t even close to a clean draft!

  • Fan Fiction (The IDIC Romance): Draft three chapters for Love and Loss, based upon the drabbles I wrote in February. Secondary goal. Shifted one scene, designated scenes for Chapter 1/3, and took notes for fleshing out the drabbles, and adding scenes and passages to draft to complete the chapter.

Plotting:

Revision:

  • The IDIC Romance: Progress with revisions for On Any Tuesday Night (was First Contact, With Jazz), as I work through lessons 2- of Holly Lisle’s Revision Course. Continue revisions for A Backdrop of Stars  1-7. Primary goal. OATN Worksheets: p 9/82 (Scene 3) in progress. 1,103 words of Chapter Two rewrite drafted.

Social Media:

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Mindful Monday and Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee share posts. Develop rough schedule to pre-produce April posts where possible; have all drafts in website interface or Scrivener by March 31. Tertiary goal. #Mindful (#BOAW2017) complete.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Draft, proof, and submit second quarter reports, due March 15. Create Flickr portfolios for this school year. Primary goal. • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. One 27 thing fling on porch and/or yard each week. 33 General Hometending rounds weekly. Secondary goal. Family; bedroom: 1/3; Porch: 1/1; general: 10/33. A combination of busy days, then a very tired Tuesday, have slowed me down a bit more than I wanted, here.
  • Photo digitalization: Scan 27 travel photos per week. Tertiary goal. Pulled this week’s photos.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Primary goal. Conversation; videos; gaming; bird rescue; shopping; lunch; snuggling; television.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group. Tertiary goal. Write-in; online interaction; critique piece in progress: page 14/19.

  • Paying it Forward: Offer beta reading, reviews, and promotional posts for other writers. Side goal. Shared many of the other #BOAW posts.

Selftending:

  • Journal six mornings and four evenings each week. Meditate six mornings and three evenings weekly. Primary goal. Morning: 2/6 journal/ meditation. Evening: 0/4 journal; 0/3 meditation.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 9 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. 99 minutes: 3/5; 111 minutes: 1/2; Strenuous:0/9 hours.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Draft CV and revise. Pulled up document and reread; simmering.

Nevertheless, We Persist: #BOAW2017 The #GirlBoner Edition!

Nevertheless, We Persist

She was warned.

She was given an explanation.

Nevertheless, she persisted.”

One woman dared to stand up,

revealing her sacred spaces,

her divine strength

and defied the rules

and the man

who tried to silence her.

“She was warned.

She was given an explanation.

Nevertheless, she persisted.”

Each woman has

her journey to make

Her stand to take

Her words to speak

Her love to share

In each of us,

a sacred space

belonging to us,

and to us alone.

She was warned.

She was given an explanation.

Nevertheless, she persisted.”

My own sacred inner space

pinging and zinging with truth

when I first heard those words,

spoken by a man,

from his patriarchal privilege,

as decree and judgment

upon a woman who dared

to call out a man,

echoing another woman

who had once done the same.

As women, we are often warned.

We’re given explanations.

We’re told, from the time we’re tiny girls,

that we are to follow the rules,

not step beyond the bounds

society made to envelop us

our lives,

our sacred selves,

our voices,

our bodies…

And the power of

Our sexuality.

Nevertheless, we persist.

Innumerable warnings,

from blatant to subtle,

told me I must

play “second fiddle” to men.

I made a good show

The “dutiful daughter”

But inside,

I was subversive,

sacred,

a sexual being,

just waiting to come

out and show myself.

I was warned.

I was given an explanation-

“Why buy the milk

When you can have the cow

For free?”

Nevertheless, I persisted

in believing

that I wasn’t a cow

That I had more to offer

As a wife

than my virginity.

I persisted,

Despite explanations

And warnings

Persisted, and insisted

that I had the right

to self-determination.

I was warned

I was given explanations

from the time I was a tiny girl,

to follow the rules,

not step beyond the bounds

made to envelop me

my life,

my sacred self,

my voice,

my body…

And the power of

My sexuality.

I was warned.

Nevertheless I persisted

in becoming

More than labels –

Daughter

Lover

Wife

Mother

I persisted until

I became wholly myself

So that I could look at my own

tiny girl of a daughter

and see the seeds of

a woman freed

From the warnings

and the explanations

A freedom that persists

And insists that

she simply

always be

Herself

Adapted: Swapping Love is in da Blog, which is taking the year off, for #Loveuary, writing TnT drabbles exploring the next Love and Loss chapter(s). #Loveuary Drabbles COMPLETED! #atozchallenge: Moved forward a bit; A post  (1/26) scheduled; on track.

  • Blogging Features: Resume Mindful Monday: Biweekly posts on mindfulness. Find blogging/website rhythm for regular and NaNo months; maintain and fine-tune regular rhythm throughout the round. Secondary goal. This is getting more natural, and I’ve developed a few strategies to carry me along.

  • Website Development: Evaluate website page needs; create, revise, polish, and post new pages. Tertiary goal. I have a rough list of what I want to do, and ideas for more refined plans.

  • Blog/Website Interface: Move ROW80 posts to website; begin duplicate posts on blog and two-way linking. Side goal. Adapting: I’m rethinking this; will delve more fully in Rounds Two and Three. Back-burnering and simmering till then.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete second quarter reports, due March 15. Create Flickr portfolios for this school year, for both children. Primary goal. I’ve begun (barely, but still…) Lise’s report list.

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, porch/playroom and/or kitchen (weather dependent). Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. Bedroom, living room, and bathroom: one 27 thing fling each week. Add 27 general flings weekly. Secondary goal. Moderate success. Didn’t hit all the goals each week, but hit most of them most weeks. Getting to the kitchen was hard with my Accomplice the chef out of work; still adjusting to the newrhythms, but getting better.
  • Personal Administration: Clean, organize, and back up all laptop fiction files. Maintain Blogging/ Homeschool directories. Email Writing subfolders, Homeschooling, and Transactions in Progress; sort and delete excess. Tertiary goal. Back-burnering; might be the perfect “breather” during Round Two/Three’s Creative Chaos Marathon (TM).
  • Photo digitalization: Scan 27 travel photos per week; save in organized files with backup. Side goal. Missed one week, but made it up the next. Usually 30 images/week. Adapting: I’ll sort after all are scanned. On track to finish the scanning.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Primary goal. Yes; every week.

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Secondary goal. Yes; every week; more planned.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group and beta reading. Tertiary goal. Yes, for the most part.

  • Paying it Forward: Offer beta reading, reviews, and promotional posts for other writers. Side goal. Crit group; beta for a series I’ve worked on before; a fanfic beta is pending.

Selftending:

  • Journal six mornings and three evenings each week. Gradually increase meditation to twice daily. Primary goal. Not perfect, but made good progress, overall.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 90 minutes moderate physical activity 6 days weekly, and 6 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc) monthly by end of round. Secondary goal EXCEEDED!

  • Intuitive Eating: Begin implementing. Tertiary goal. Adapting: Making this a Leap of Faith goal in conjunction with Smart Change.
  • Smart Change: Plan one habit change using these methods. Side goal. Rereading: Chapter Three in progress; began worksheets.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Self-publish “A Splash of Red”. Postponing.

  • Find a part-time job (10-15 hours weekly). Moving slowly; changes in Accomplice’s work schedule and helping with his business paperwork sidelined this.

  • Make a decision on Holly Lisle revision course; follow through. Moving sporadically through Lesson 2/22. I decided to do this spontaneously; it’s a bit trickier to work it into my existing plans.

  • Gather resources on creating marketing/business plans. Saving relevant posts. On track.
