The Strength of Solid Foundations: #12WeekYear / #ROW80 Week 6 Final

In my Wednesday update, I mentioned that upheaval had come into my life, but I wasn’t ready to discuss it. One reason was that I didn’t yet have a full picture of what the chaos was, and what form it was going to take.

Sometimes, all it takes to get a clearer picture is a few simple words:

  • Cancer
  • Pancreatic
  • Metastasized
  • Inoperable
  • Incurable

Those words are terrifying enough that most of us probably hope they stay “out there” – away from us and those we cherish.

Unfortunately, those are the words my husband heard on Thursday, at the end of a four-day hospitalization for a painful and swollen leg that was diagnosed as deep vein thrombosis.

He was cited a life expectancy of 6 to 12 months, depending on whether he elects to undergo chemotherapy, and how he responds to it, if he does.

For those who don’t know, we have two teens, ages 13 and 16. We’ve always been direct and honest with the kids; that seems to be helping them deal with this extremely sobering news. It will be hardest, I think, for our daughter. She’s younger, has a more intense personality, feels things very deeply – and has been very close to her dad her whole life. While our son and my husband get along well, with no conflicts, they have a “guys leaning on a truck” type of connection…they like to hang out and watch TV while chatting about not much.

For me…

Twenty years really isn’t enough. Jim is more than my husband. He’s my mate, my best friend, my sometimes combatant, my lover, my complement, my partner in business and parenthood, and so much more.

The next months will be – uncertain. We’re still awaiting biopsy results; maybe they have some good news, but we’re pragmatic people. We’d rather prepare for the worst, and be surprised if the news ends up being more positive. It feels more productive than hoping this was all a huge mistake, and then being slammed back into reality.

I’m staying with ROW80, and #12WeekYear, because having that structure gives me a framework I can lean on. However, things may change considerably, and with little warning, over the next months.

Positive energy, healing thoughts, and prayers are all equally welcome as my family makes this journey together.

Tangled and Useless for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers  and friends!

I’m so glad you came along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…and enjoy the journey!

It’s been an – eventful week. I’m not ready to discuss, but events have led to some serious shuffling of priorities and timelines – and I don’t see that changing much for the near future, at least.

So, while I was going to bring a brand-new segment of Among the Firestars, my epic fantasy NaNoWriMo novel, I’ve yet to add any new words today, so far. So, instead, I’m sharing 8 sentences of my main character’s fever-dream…

I could give you context for this story…but I think it’s more fun if I don’t, so…

On to the WIPpeting!

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is November 8, 2017.
  • I have 8 sentences for you today, for the day.

Tangled and Useless

It was he, in Kaivelt’s guise, taking from her that which she meant only for her Solemate. He was a Usurper; he took what was nay his and seeded her with his poisoned blood, so that she produced nay the beginning of her Line, but instead a tiny, twisted babe who never drew breath, never roused for his Welcoming…

Tacivaar had usurped her. As the talons and fangs of the Usurpers’ machines rent the world-mother’s skin, and drove in their anguish, so had Tacivaar pierced her while wearing Kaivelt’s guise, leading her back to the maze each time she found some hint or shadow of his true form –

Was it Kaivelt, or Tacivaar, who wanted her now?

Which of them was coming for her? She saw both, intertwined as the pattern of one of Rachyl’s weavings. What if to pull them apart was to undo her, and leave her as nothing but the strands, tangled and useless to all, even herself?

Who is having the dream?

Who are Tacivaar and Kaively?

Why is she having these dreams?

Any guesses?

If you’re missing my TnT fan fiction, and want more before they return from shore leave next month, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page for an all-hours buffet. =D .

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

Holding My Foundations: #12WeekYear / #ROW80 Midweek 6 Update

If ROW80 is the writing challenge that knows we all have lives, this is the week my life decided to be sure I know it’s there – in spades.

I’m not ready to share details, but there are things that take precedence over goals, and this is one of them. So, although I was planning to re-evaluate my #12WeekYear goals at the end of the week, I’ll be setting some aside, at least temporarily, a little early.

I’ll also be focusing in on other goals more intensely, because, when life is chaotic and uncertain, I’ve found that certain activities help me to channel my nervous and restless energies. And that’s imperative, because as I go, so does my household.

What do you do, when life throws you a hard curve?

Have you found some techniques that work better than others?

Novel Foundations: #ROW80 #12WeekYear W5 Final Update

 Hey there!

As I write this, four days of NaNoWriMo are in the books, and I’m in the midst of the second of three write-ins I’m attending this weekend.

My progress this week was focused on a few specific goals, while others took a back-burner position, simmering through a waiting week. While I’d love for all of my goals to be at least the green of progress being made, I know this is natural for my transitions between one challenge and another.

Speaking of challenges…

I’m getting to the point where I can feel my characters starting to breathe into their lives and flesh out. They aren’t exactly jumping up and taking over yet, but they are more than I imagined them as in my 25K words of planning and early plotting.

What is different is that last night I had an epiphany regarding the major plot problem of not just this novel, but also the entire series. And here’s the thing – the answer was there all the time – it features prominently in every volume in the series. I won’t have to change anything, and it won’t seem contrived at all when it comes into play later in this novel. As a matter of fact, it’s the kind of realization that makes me wonder why it didn’t occur to me sooner…now that it has, it seems absolutely obvious – and perfect, as far as I can see right now.

Have you ever had this kind of writing epiphany?

If so, has it stood the test of drafting?

If not, what’s your biggest plotting challenge?

Pressing for #NaNoWriMo2017 WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…and let me weave you a story.

But now, on to the WIPpeting!

I’ve been sharing installments of my TnT fan fiction story, a revised version of Humanity’s Enterprise.

But it’s now November, and that means National Novel Writing Month. And THAT means I’m working on something new.

I thought I’d play a little game, here. Each week, I’ll post a snippet of my new story. For every comment I get, I’ll share one fact about the novel the story is coming from.  And, since it’s been tricky for me lately, if you visit me, I’ll come visit you right back.

No worries – next month, my favorite interspecies couple will be back to irk and entice each other (and delight us).

Until then, though…here’s a little taste of something brand new.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is November 1, 2017.
  • I have 1 paragraph for you today, for the date.

Pressing

Her scalp tightened with each new item, so that, by the end, it felt far too tight to hold her skull, and the familiar pain was settling in behind her left eye like a Canivaarii fang, pressing and puncturing.

Who is “she”?

What are the items she references?

What do you most want to know after reading this?

Any guesses?

If you’re missing TnT, no worries. While our co-combatants are on hiatus, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page anytime, and catch up on some of their other adventures.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

November Foundations: #ROW80 #12WeekYear Midweek Update 5

Hey there!

As we bid farewell to October, I was sitting at a local Denny’s with several members of my local NaNoWriMo region, beginning the new month and the new challenge with a writing sprint.

It’s a good way to start a month, and a good way to pile up some early words as an insurance policy, since life inevitably happens until it doesn’t.

There have been some months when I’ve made it my goal to surge through those 50,000 words as fast as I can (once in just 10 days, which was at once exhilarating and exhausting)

This year, I have a lot of things going on. Since I’d like to close out both my first 12 Week Year and 2017 with a cleaner slate and more breathing room, I’m aiming for a maintenance word count most days…somewhere between the 1,668 I need to make my goal, and about 3,000, which is an amount I can do in a less than three hours if the words are there, but which won’t make me unavailable for the rest of life.

I’m making a few exceptions. I’ll be attending two writing sprints each Sunday, so I may top 3K those days. Also, this Saturday is NaNo’s Double Up Day, with a goal to double donations and word counts, and I’ll be attending a four-hour write-in (and trying for the double). And on Tuesday nights, our fantastic, forward thinking Municipal Liaison, Shannon Kauderer, has set us up with NaNo’s new chat feature, so we’ll be having online sprints then.

So Sundays and Tuesdays will be my only high-NaNo-intensity days.

If all goes well, that should leave me with five days a week to focus more on other parts of this Action Plan, and those that follow it.

I should have some idea how it’s going by the end of next week, when I hit the halfway mark in my inaugural 12 Week Year, and take stock of my overall progress toward my goals. If necessary, I’ll make adjustments then.

Are you participating in NaNo?

If so, why?

If not, are there other writing challenges you enjoy?

Standard disclaimer:

I don’t own them; I don’t profit from them. They just tell me to write, and I do as ordered. They both outrank me, after all!

Surprises

“Which is it, T’Pol?”  Trip put his hands on his hips and got too close; that always seemed to trigger her a little, but, just like these dust-ups they seemed to keep on having, herkind of got the feeling that she liked it as much as he did.

She straightened her spine – how the hell did she manage to make it straighter than it already was? What the hell kind of witch was she, and what was going to happen if Starfleet Command ever saw her doing that? Probably have every human in Starfleet breaking their backs trying to do the same thing.

“Commander Tucker.”

“Yeah?” He sent the shiver of arousal at the way she said his name right back to her; her eyes were zeroed in on him, just him, and he wanted to keep them that way. Woman had the sexiest damn eyes – not quite as dark as they looked in a jazz club on a Tuesday night, and he thought he could get lost in the little flecks of green and gold –

“You are obstructing my path, and preventing me from determining the answer to your query.”

Damn. Her chin was up, and she enunciated each word. He could tell she was getting “agitated,” as she put it. If he pushed her any further now, he was going to push her away, and he didn’t want that.

No, he didn’t want that at all.

What he wanted was to get a hell of a lot closer to his Vulcan Surprise Package, now that they were both officially assigned to the same ship.  And that meant unwrapping a few surprises of his own.

He faux-glared at her for another second and a half, then shrugged. “Well, since I’m apparently just getting in your way, Sub-commander, the station is all yours. Never mind that this is Engineering, and I’m the Chief Engineer, since I’m sure you were playing with more complicated toys than this before you cut your first tooth –“

“I have never injured my teeth, Commander Tucker. And you are still blocking my access to the diagnostic display.”

“Well, then – I guess I’ll just go get a sandwich, since I’m not needed here.” He spun around and walked off, but turned to face her way when he went down the ladder. She was still standing in the same place, but she’d turned her head to watch him go, and it was a little tipped in that adorable way that said that just maybe he’d surprised her.

Trip started to whistle, imagining how much more surprised she was going to be when he brought her back a cup of chamomile tea.

This Star Trek: Enterprise TnT fan fiction is brought to you courtesy of Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday, where this week’s prompt was “Which/witch/wich;” beginning with “Which”, and using all three versions, but NOT the old “Which witch is which.” As always, no editing (beyond typos).

You can find more of my fan fiction on my ff.net page.
