Reshaping My Foundations: #12WeekYear/#ROW80 Week 3 Final Update

Hey there! 

It’s time again for my 12 Week Year 1 End of Week 3//ROW80 Round 4 Update. It’s been a productive week, but, one-quarter of the way into my first “year”, I can see that what I suspected at the outset is true – I have too many goals.

Not as many too many as I’ve often had in the past, but my reach is just slightly too far ahead of my grasp. I’m focused, but I seem to be falling a bit short each week, which is a clear sign that I need to dial things back a bit for Year Two.

Of course, that’s still 9 weeks away. So, I’m going to take this week to go through my Year One goals, and lighten them up a little. The point, after all, is to learn to set goals that are a challenge, but are also attainable. If I can’t make the goal with genuine focused effort…the goal needs to shift a bit.

The beauty is that there will be another “year” after this one – and then another, and another, and another. I can grow incrementally, and, even if it’s not as fast as I might prefer, I am doing better than I was when my goals extended over a 52 Week Year rather than a 12 Week Year, which gives me a lot more opportunity to adjust things.

I’ve decided I’m going to do this every quarter-“year.” That way, I won’t start floundering, and lose my momentum because my goals are just a bit too much. And, if I’ve set my bar too low, I can add a bit.

New bras are here. Not thrilled with the Just My Size (fits, but very low quality; you get what you pay for). LOVE the Goddess sports bra…LOVE! Supportive, comfortable, and even pretty-ish! That’s a lot for a large-size working bra!

  • I’ll close out this goal as soon as I’ve sent the Torrid bra back from whence it came.

Shaky Foundations: #12WeekYear/#ROW80 Week 3 Midweek Update

  

This week, I’m pondering my foundations – in writing goals, and in life.

#MeToo  has been extremely active this week. Women around the world are speaking out about their of sexual subjugation by men –unwanted advances, harassment, inequality, presumption, drugging, abuse, assault, rape…it’s different in each case, but it comes down to this:

Our society, our culture, and all too often the men in our lives, treat women as existing more for men’s pleasure and purposes than anything else. Most women are groomed from childhood to do the pleasing and serve the purposes men set forth for us.

We’ve learned the lesson well. Most women are adept at tending to the needs of others. As for our own needs, hopes, and dreams – often, they’re subverted in the process. Think of the Invisible But Indispensible Mother – “women’s work’ tends to be the thankless and endless tasks that add grace notes to life that are often taken for granted.

I’ve got #metoo stories. The more I step into my own strength and my own life, the more little flashes I have of times men have used me for their own purposes without regard for the fact that I have purposes of my own, beyond them. I’m not bitter about this – I really like men, and guys are often built on a shaky foundation that allowed them to see this behavior as natural, not domineering.

I need to tend to those cracks and bows, so I can build a life that will stand strong.

 And I’m not sure how to do that.

  • Went to HerRoom.com, and found they made it EASY to know what I’m getting! No more underwire booby traps (pun absolutely intended)! I ordered a daily use and a sports bra (YES! I didn’t think they even made those in my side, and now I’ll have one for running and workouts!). 3/3 purchased, a bit early!
  • I’ll close out this goal as soon as I’ve sent the Torrid bra back from whence it came.

Spontaneous Building: 12 Week Year/#ROW80 Week 2 Final Update

Hey there!

As I noted in my midweek update, which I didn’t get posted until Friday, the week began with a fall festival and a dinner for two, and quickly moved on to a rather stressful drive to Rochester, New Hampshire, where I discovered I’d left my computer bag sitting on the family room table – 4 hours away – an occurrence which meant that I did no work on any of my goals from then until early Friday morning.

That was compounded by the fact that, although we’d had this trip planned for months, I somehow forgot to take that fact into consideration while planning my very first 12 Week Year, so the workload was unrealistic even if I had taken the laptop and decided to work (not something I do well when I travel, under the best of circumstances).

And then…

Last night, I happened across a local friend’s Facebook picture. He and his wife were waiting in a very long line for the annual Candlelight Tour of the General Philip Schuyler House – an event I planned to attend, but somehow thought was scheduled for Monday night, even though that really doesn’t make much sense.

So, I decided to feed my Hamilton passion (Schuyler was Alexander Hamilton’s father-in-law); a way for me to partake in my rich local history (the Battles of Saratoga were fought in my hometown); and indulge in some writing research (parts of my Philodosia story occur in this house, by night).

I waited about 2 hours in line. Chatted with the folks in front of me, and, after a while, volunteers and rangers (the Schuyler House became part of Saratoga National Historical Park in 1950) moved along the line sharing information and stories, and taking questions.

We only toured the downstairs rooms: main hall with surveying office at the end (this was a working country house, not a mansion); parlor, dining room, and the kitchen where only slaves and servants generally entered. In the kitchen (maybe my favorite room), I joined the Old Saratoga Historical Association, and volunteered for training on giving the tour, which would be #awesomewow!

Needless to say, my Week Two doesn’t look stellar – but progress toward goals isn’t all that matters in life, and it was a full-rich week, in other ways.

When Building Blocks Tumble: 12 Week Year/#ROW80 Week 2 Midweek Update

So, ROW80 is the writing challenge that knows I have a life, and that’s good, because, this week, life was definitely happening in my world.

Saturday and Sunday, I worked events for Chef Bluebeard’s Flavor Enhancement Sauces. Saturday was the Goat Brothers Swap Meet and Motorcycle Show; and Sunday was the Second Annual Schuylerville Fall Festival.

Both were productive – we sold 24 bottles in those two days – our highest weekly sales to date.

Then, on Monday, Chef Bluebeard and I (call me Mrs. Bluebeard!) headed out on our first romantic getaway since we became parents a little over sixteen years ago. We made sure the kids were well provisioned with all their favorite foods, an emergency fund, and a trusted family friend to be their adult contact, which came in handy when our water pump malfunctioned, and they needed water to hold them over until the pump repairman could finish his work and restore our system to operational status.

Also, we were getting settled into our inn in Rochester, NH on Monday night, a good four hours from home, when I realized that I’d left my computer bag on the family room table – with my laptop; meditation and journaling supplies; and the charger head for our phones all inside.

That was a bit of an adjustment for me, since I sleep less than Jim does, on average, and had been planning to get some work done during those hours.

Instead, I actually relaxed. I didn’t write for four days. We visited with my friend Lauren and her boyfriend (and their two really sweet dogs, too). We ate out and cooked over an open fire and explored tide pools and a little bit of Acadia National Park in Maine, as well as the Bar Harbor area.

And Jim and I reconnected. Some things that needed to be aired were, in the nature of a long-term partnership. We cocooned in a lovely little cabin with a mountain view. We started to see a glimmer of what life will be like when the children are grown and we’re free to go as we will, without the preparation this trip required.

When we came home, we found two teens happy to see us, but confirming that they were fine despite the problem with the water pump, and that they’d be happy for us to go again.

They are growing up, and becoming independent. It’s good to know they could handle this “trial run” at adulthood, in a supported way. It bodes well for their futures, and says we’re preparing them well.

All that said, I didn’t accomplish very much toward my weekly goals – maybe not much of a surprise, since I’m only getting to this midweek update on Friday – and I’m adapting my original goals for this week to accommodate reality, since I forgot to take the trip into account.

  • On Sunday, I got brave and made initial contact with the owner of Amigo’s Cantina, where Chef Bluebeard’s sauces gestated. I suggested two sauces that would be a very good fit for the restaurant, and got an invitation to talk further next week. 1/3 stores.

Health, Fitness, and Spirituality:

Another area where any focus is a good thing.

Tai chi, yoga, reiki: On hold for Week 2, due to travel.

  • Didn’t really cook a veggie-based meal, but our lobster and steak feast included spinach salad, sweet potato, and broccoli…might cook something today or tomorrow, but calling this “in progress” for now.

12 Week Year Week One Final; #ROW80 October 8, 2017

I’m sitting at our booth at the Schuylerville Fall Festival, listening to the drum riffs provided by Rural Soul. It’s a lovely day, cooler when the breeze blows, which is a relief, since the forecast was for record-breaking heat.

We’ve had a good day here – 10 bottles so far, which ties us for the best weekend sales we’ve had. Things have slowed down a bit, but there are still people around, so we might even break the record in the last half hour.

Once we’re done, we’re going out to dinner at Amigo’s Cantina. That will be a bit of a full-circle; Jim was the exectutive chef there when they opened 10 years ago, and he created all the recipes they used until he was released a year ago in July, launching us on this current adventure into entrepreneurship.

I have a confession to make. I finished the paragraph above on Friday afternoon, five days after I began it. I didn’t want to mention it until it was all said and done, but Jim and I had our first romantic getaway without the children Monday- Thursday. I’d planned to take my laptop and have time to work along the way, but I left it sitting on the family room table instead, so now I’m scrambling to catch up…

Thankfully, ROW80 is the writing challenge that knows I have a life, so…

First Blocks in the Foundation: #ROW80 October 4, 2017

The first update of every round comes quickly; but, this time, I feel like I’ve got more than random progress to report – and the update is a whole lot simpler than those I’ve done previously.

Why is that?

All right, I know I asked the question just to be able to answer it – but this might help more folks than just me, so here we go:

This round, my first with The 12-Week Year, involves not just setting goals, but creating weekly action plans that support and move me toward the completion of those plans. So, throughout the week, I need only schedule the action steps, then execute.

Of course, there’s a bit more to it than that…but I’m still working my way through the learning process – and this is as far as I’ve gotten, right now…I’m planning to move further along after I sleep, and, in a week or two, to have fine-tuned the entire process.

Until then, though – my first-ever 12 Week Year/ROW80 Update!

Week 1 Action Plan Progress:

Foundations of Growth: Where ROW80 Meets the 12 Week Year

As we move into the final months of the year, I’m trying a new approach to goal-setting and attainment – The 12-Week Year. I’ll have more details on the hows and whys of this change in my upcoming sponsor post. For now, though, let’s get on with the goals, shall we?

Relationships, Family, and Home:

Complete beta readings for Spellfire’s Kiss and Stained Blood (giving back and paying forward).

  • I enjoy giving back to and supporting my fellow writers, and deepen my understanding of revisions by assisting others. I also spread goodwill that may return to me when I need extra eyes and/or detailed readings, myself.

  • I’ll celebrate the completion of each of these books by giving myself an evening of leisure to cap off the effort expended.

Declutter/clean/ organize porch; my side of bedroom; and my study; making these spaces useful and tidy.

  • I function better, and am more inspired, in a tidier environment. As cooler weather settles in, I’ll be home more. I want the entry to our home and my personal spaces to be useful and embracing.

  • I’ll celebrate the completion of each area by spending some time in it – reading, journaling, having a cup of coffee, listening to music – just some time to quietly and privately enjoy what I’ve accomplished.

Complete required homeschool obligations, including facilitating Jeremiah’s driving practice.

  • Completing the requirements is the price paid for our lifestyle. Jeremiah’s driving will help him become a safe and conscientious driver– a crucial step on his path to adulthood.

  • I’ll celebrate the completion/submission of the reports with an evening of relaxation once the reports have been emailed (prior to December 1, 2017). I’ll celebrate assisting Miah by continuing to enjoy our time together, and sprinkling adventures along the way.

Professional/Financial:

Complete the DIY-MFA Pixels to Platform Course and Montoya Digital Marketing’s upcoming SEO course, and devote 3 hours weekly to How to Revise Your Novel.

  • It’s time to build the foundations of my writing career upon the bedrock of knowledge.
  • I’ll celebrate the completion of each course with an hour or two of reflection/brianstorming/dreaming accompanied by a beverage of my choice. I’ll celebrate completing each week’s revision time with an Enterprise episode or fanfiction hour.

Plan, plot, and draft one fantasy novel (Trueborn: Solemates), and write a poem a day for OctPoWriMo.

  • Writers write, and I will keep that top of mind as I develop the non-drafting aspects of my writing career.
  • I’ll celebrate the completion of each stage of the novel creation by reading one work of fiction from my Kindle library, and purchasing another (because books!). I’ll celebrate the completion of my OctPoWriMo challenge by compiling the poems and associated drawings into a rough chapbook.

Increase sales of Chef Bluebeard/related products and services to $750/week.

  • Helping my Accomplice attain his goals makes me a better Accomplice, and adds depth and texture to our marriage. Also, we all have to eat, and like having things like electricity and the internet.

  • I’ll celebrate the attainment of this income level with Jim, and with the kids, in a way that will be relevant for us all…since I won’t be the only one involved in this, I don’t want to be the only one determining the nature of that celebration.

Health, Fitness, and Spirituality:

Complete the 5K Training Samsung Health, and begin the 10K program, outdoors or at indoor tracks.

  • I want to be fit and mobile a as I age, and I enjoy the challenge of training. I feel better when I’m regularly increasing my fitness levels.
  • I’ll celebrate the end of the 5K Training with the purchase of 2 pound hand weights and running socks, and the end of the 12 Week Year 10K training by investigating 5K races for 2018.

Attend tai chi class twice weekly, health and weather permitting, and explore yoga and reiki at ReVibe.

  • For me, mindfulness is an integral element of fitness. I enjoy this peaceful community, and the beauty, challenge, and discipline these forms require as I develop deeper spiritual awareness.
  • I’ll celebrate this goal – by doing it! The doing will be its own reward, each time.

Cook a vegetable based meal or snack 3 times weekly.

  • I love nearly all vegetables, but tend to forget to prepare and eat them. This can be as simple as baking a sweet potato, or as elaborate as I care to get.

  • I’ll celebrate attaining this goal by going out to enjoy a vegetarian meal.

Personal Expression:

Purchase three new bras from three sources, and evaluate.

  • I, uh, haven’t bought new bras in five years, and, needless to say, it’s far past time I did! I want to explore, and find the best fit and style for my taste and needs.
  • I’ll celebrate attaining this goal by retiring my existing bras – and by getting one more of whichever is my favorite of the new three.

Assess my jewelry and other accessories, and purchase new pieces under $20 as they speak to me.

  • I often forget I have jewelry I love, and hang onto pieces that no longer speak to me. Aquiring a pretty here and there, and wearing them, lifts my mood and my self-image.
  • I’ll celebrate the attainment of this goal by finding and purchasing a more efficient place to store my pretty little treasures when I’m not wearing them.

Evaluate my wardrobe as the season changes, purchasing a second pair of jeans; gloves; and other items as needed.

  • I tend to forget/deprioritize buying clothing (see bra goal above!).
  • I’ll celebrate this one by enjoying my new, well-fitting clothing!
