Sowing Re-vision: May 21, 2017

Hi there!

It’s the time in the month where I assess my goals, so that I can finish with a strong sense of focus.

This month, the shift is more dramatic, since I’ve been exploring Gwen Montoya’s excellent, community-based course, Build Your Marketing Muscle, and, in the process, I’m working on a business plan at last.

And that has led me to some early realizations about the most effective ways to invest my time, energy, and focus. Changes will be noted as “Adapted goals.”

In other news, it’s been a busy few days -eye doctor for my son; homeschool teen game night for my daughter, then Waterford Canalfest with my son – along with marketing/labeling/drafting/revision/ and beta stuff…bits and pieces of a full-rich life.

How do you know when or if it’s time to stay the course or shift your goals?

Writing:

  • Story A Day May:  Main project – Write daily flash story of about ~333 words. Side: Write a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction drabble (100 word story) for my Cowled arc, based on prompt and words from fans. Primary goal. 19/31 drafted for both projects. Still one day behind; will be caught up by end of day. Progress.

  • Kifo Island Series: Complete draft of The Last House (a Kifo prequel). (Approximate word count TBD). Target 3,333 words per week, after #STAD stories and FDWR; complete by May 31. Adapted tertiary goal: Back-burner focus until June (or higher priority goals on target).

Plotting:

  • Story a Day May : Main Project: Necessary planning/plotting/research for flash fiction stories (333 words/less, with exceptions) exploring July’s Still Nameless: Kifo Island #8, using #StaD prompts. Side Project: Cowled arcnecessary planning/plotting/research for drabbles (100 word stories) carrying “Countdown” forward, using #StaD and fan prompts. Primary goal. Day 20/31 in early progress. Caught up one day – progress.

  • Kifo Island: Complete plotting as needed to complete rough draft of The Last House. Begin hybrid planning for Still Nameless, using The Story Toolkit  and The Writer’s Coloring Book;get through basic character sketches. Adapted secondary goal: Back-burner until more caught up with higher-priority writing/plotting goals.

Revision:

  • The IDIC Romance: On Any Tuesday Night (was First Contact, With Jazz), Complete lessons 2 (Promises), and 3 of Holly Lisle’s Revision Course by May 31. Aim for 3 hours/week (timing TBD). Primary goal.well over/3 hours complete; pp 6682 for lesson 2; read Lesson 3 and worksheet; gathered materials for lesson; printed lesson pages and filed. On target – and delighted!

  • Short Stories: “Miss Spider and Mister Fly”; Confirm copy line editing if ready this month; take any other necessary steps. Secondary goal. I’ve received my contract (and read it)! I’ll send it back in the next day or two, and then the final line edit should be done within a couple of weeks. On target!

Submission/Publication:

  • Miss Spider and Mister Fly” (for Dark and Bitter anthology): follow up with editors as/if needed. Primary goal. See above.

Social Media:

Hometending:

  • Homeschooling: Complete rough drafts of third quarter reports for both kids (due 6/15/17). Continue adding to Flickr portfolios for this school year as circumstances warrant. Primary goal. Arrangements underway for ordering required tests/testing space.

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. Two flings on porch, and two 27 minute yardtending sessions weekly. At least six General Hometending rounds per day, 6 times/week. Secondary goal. Hometending 4/6; yardtending; porch; family room, kitchen: 1/each. Not the best week for this; some outings, heat, rain. Modest progress.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Conversation; walks; business/labeling/marketing setup; eye doctor/Canalfest with son; homeschool teen game night with daughter. SUCCESS!!!

  • Career Furtherance: Complete Patreon profile and launch site. Assist my Acomplice in his efforts to launch his cottage industry; aim for 10 hours/week. Secondary goal. Some video creation simmering; some discussion with Accomplice about labels and branding; label design and marketing class. Accomplice: 9/10 hours. Solid progress this week!

  • Beta reading/critiques: Complete at least first five chapters of both beta novels. Catch up with crits for my local group (I’m behind 3 at the moment). Tertiary goal. Highlighted first chapters of both betas for comment; Catchup critique 1/3 – a questionnaire (read the material; simmering). Solid progress here.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and two evenings each week. Primary goal. Mornings: meditation 4/5; journaling 3/5. Things have been a bit scattered, but great meditation. Modest progress.

  • Fitness: Get a cumulative total of at least 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 123 minutes (2 hours, 3 minutes) twice weekly, and 4 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, yardtending, etc.) each week, using my Samsung Health app for guidance and accountability. Adapted Secondary goal under consideration…stay tuned! (4/4 hours strenuous; mowing; hiking; Baby Steps to 5K). 111: 3/5. 123: 0/ 2.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Marketing: Sign up for and keep up with fellow writer (and unschooling mom) Gwen Montoya’s 30 day course, Building Your Marketing Muscles. This will help both my Accomplice and I as we move forward to the place where we are selling our creative efforts. Working here every 2-3 days is giving me plenty to simmer and play with. On target!

Sowing Seeds of Revision: May 17, 2017

Hi there!

Ever have to tear yourself away from a project to get your update posted?

I’m less than 20 pages from finishing Lesson 2/22 of my revision course – the lesson I started way back in January – and I’m feeling like I need to do this before I can move on to other projects.

Later today, I’ll be taking my son for a visit to the eye doctor – so I want to be finished with those pages before I sleep…and I’m rather willing to work through the night, to get the job done – if I can manage to stay awake.

First, though, the update…

Writing:

  • Story A Day May: Main project – Write daily flash story of about ~333 words. Side: Write a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction drabble (100 word story) for my Cowled arc, based on prompt and words from fans. Primary goal. 15/31 drafted for both projects. One day behind, by choice – see below.

  • Trueborn: Complete draft of Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2). Target: 2 scenes/week, after #StaD stories. Finish by May 25. Secondary goal. Scene 45/50 in progress; setting aside until HTRYN Lesson 2 is complete.

  • Kifo Island Series: Complete draft of The Last House (a Kifo prequel) . (Approximate word count TBD). Target 3,333 words per week, after #STAD stories and FDWR; complete by May 31. Tertiary goal. May be moved to June, depending on progress of other writing goals this week.

Plotting:

  • Story a Day May : Main Project: Necessary planning/plotting/research for flash fiction stories (333 words/less, with exceptions) exploring July’s Still Nameless: Kifo Island #8, using #StaD prompts. Side Project: Cowled arc ;necessary planning/plotting/research for drabbles (100 word stories) carrying “Countdown” forward, using #StaD and fan prompts. Primary goal. Day 15/31 complete. One day behind, by choice.

Aim for 3 hours/week (timing TBD). Primary goal.well over/3 hours complete; pp 2965/82 (yippee; less than 20 pages to go!) Lesson 2 is my priority until complete; it’s dragging on me.

  • Short Stories: “Miss Spider and Mister Fly”; Confirm copy editing if ready this month; take any other necessary steps. Secondary goal. Nothing yet, but the grapevine suggests it won’t be that much longer….

Submission/Publication:

  • Miss Spider and Mister Fly” (for Dark and Bitter anthology): follow up with editors as/if needed. Primary goal. See above.

Hometending:

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. • Beta reading/critiques: Complete at least first five chapters of both beta novels. Catch up with crits for my local group (I’m behind 3 at the moment). Tertiary goal. Simmering schedule; should have it set by Wednesday. Reread final questionnaire topic for one of the crit pieces; simmering. Will be tackling this once HTRYN Lesson 2 is complete.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and two evenings each week. Primary goal. Mornings: 3/5.
• Website/Blog Development: Make basic sketches of new pages; prioritize; begin implementation. Likely setting aside until marketing class is complete.

Sowing and Germinating: May 14, 2017

Hi there!

Isn’t it amazing how much can change in just a few days?

When I posted on Wednesday, I was just emerging from a reclusive, “down” few days. I tend to be upbeat and happy, so, while these moods don’t typically last very long, they are rather unsettling, because I’m not used to them.

But the overcast has (mostly literally) lifted. We had lovely weather Thursday and Friday, and my teen son and I went on outings both days: to Skidmore College’s Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, a walk around the lovely Skidmore campus, and then lunch at Five Guys on Thursday; and a trip to Albany (about 40 minutes south of us) to take in the traditional Dutch street scrubbing, and the first hours of the Albany Tulip Festival (where I oohed and ahhed and swooned over flowers, and he chose a bench and reviewed the driver’s manual on his phone, because he’ll be 16 in a few months, and he likes to be prepared. There was a side trip to the New York State Museum, which has been a favorite place to explore since he was a toddler.

The fresh air and sunshine helped, and I’m feeling much more productive and settled, while at the same time aware that I’m deepening into a new level of awareness.

Know what I mean?

Sowing Into Emotion: May 10, 2017

I was just getting ready to try to explain the deep internal explorations I’m in the midst of, and the complicated emotions that go with them…when I realized that a good part of this current inner turbulence could be related to the fact that Mother’s Day is this weekend.

As the mother of three children – two living, and one not – Mother’s Day is, at best, complicated. Fraught.

It being a rainy week, and having one of those blindsiding disagreements with my mate don’t make things any less turbulent.

But turbulence, while sometimes unpleasant to be in the midst of, is also essential for growth, and mighty handy for a writer. So, I’m bearing up and trying to stay grounded [more on that in another post], and trusting that all this not-necessarily-lovely chaos will lead me to places where I need to go.

All this is reflected in my goals – where social interaction was needed, I didn’t have much to offer Thursday -Monday. I’m feeling a bit more up now that the moon is full, the dust-up is settling, and I realized my emotional fragility with the bombardment of Mother’s Day…I’m just tired and headachy, not so much wanting to hide out from everyone who doesn’t live here. =)

For those who are parents, no matter the age of your children, may you appreciate them – this weekend, and always. And if, like me, you have a child you can’t hug – then please accept one from me; I grieve with you.

Sowing New Perspectives: May 7, 2017

Hi there!

It’s one of those weeks that feels momentous, even though I can’t exactly put my finger on why. I think it’s more like I’ve made an inner shift – not something that can be quantified or defined (at least as yet), but which is permeating my life on multiple fronts, and which may well shape my path, moving forward.

I’ve felt, for much of the week, as though I’ve been scrambling to not quite keep up. I’m in transition in many areas, and things are shifting and stirring…

Always an exciting, if unsettling, place to be.

Have you ever had that transitional feeling?

Sowing Onward: April 30, 2017

As April waxes into May, it’s time for me to evaluate my ROW8o progress. Often, I wait to do this until the month is officially over, and make an additional post for it. But it occurs to me that it might be more efficient to do the major post now, and add any extra progress to the first May update, so I can just use my regular schedule.

Today has been a more restful day for me, between finishing up my April challenges, and moving into new ones tomorrow…

What’s blooming in your May?

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo: Draft The Last House (a Kifo prequel). ~65K. Target: 2,1q67 words/day average to complete by April 30. Primary goal. 65,090/65,000 words. I’m not calling this a complete win, because I still have a third to a half of the story left to write. Lots of progress, and I’m still eager to finish, so this is a success. =)

  • Trueborn: Complete draft of Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2). Target: 3,333 words/week; add words every day I reach my Camp quota, above, Finish by April 30. Secondary goal. While I did add words intermittently throughout the month, I never quite reached the weekly goal, and the book is only modestly closer to being finished. Minor success.

Plotting:

  • Story a Day May: Main Project: Create basic sketches for flash fiction stories (999 words/less, with exceptions) exploring July’s Still Nameless: Kifo Island #8, using #StaD prompts. Side Project: Reread Cowled arccreate bbasic sketches for drabbles (100 word stories) based on existing notes and prompt words. Primary goal. Cowled: Read 6/12 existing stories; added 7 “placeholder” scene slots with general description as base for new drabbles. It’s a beginning…I couldn’t do as much as I wanted with this goal, since I was expecting a prompt book in advance of the challenge, but there wasn’t one this year. A bit of progress; a bit of success.

Revision:

  • The IDIC Romance: On Any Tuesday Night (was First Contact, With Jazz), Complete lesson 2 (Promises) of Holly Lisle’s Revision Course  by April 30. Aim for 20 pages/week analyzed. Primary goal. Well…20 pages a week was laughable, really. It never got close to happening, but I did move forward several pages, and have printed more worksheets, organized the materials, and purchased a huge new 3” binder to expand into. Modest success.

  • Short Stories: “Miss Spider and Mister Fly”; Confirm copy editing if they’re ready this month; take any other necessary steps. Secondary goal. Still waiting.

Submission/Publication:

  • Miss Spider and Mister Fly” (for Dark and Bitter anthology): follow up with editors as/if needed. Primary goal. Waiting.

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge: Confirm scheduling, and add link and branding to each day’s post. Respond to comments daily, and visit 3 other participants at least 6 times/week. Primary goal. All posted on website: 26/26. Shared and linked through W; 23/26 complete (wrapping that up later today). I fell down a little in the sharing and the visiting, due to the busy, busy month and new format. A modest success.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, Mindful Monday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee Share posts. Pre-produce posts where possible; aim for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday. Tertiary goal. The prep stuff and regular blogging were spotty. I managed WIPpets every week. Moderate success.

Hometending:

  • Continue adding to Flickr portfolios for this school year as circumstances warrant. Primary goal. I took some new pictures during outings, but didn’t edit, Flickrize, or tag for albums.. Moderate success.

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete two 27 thing flings each room, each week. One 27 thing fling on porch and in yard each week. At least five General Hometending rounds per day, 5 times/week. Secondary goal. Didn’t hit every mark every week, but solid progress despite an extremely transitional month.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Chatting, videos, business stuff, planning. Tai chi/salad date with my Accomplice Thursday afternoon. Plans in the works for some upcoming travels (and a newer car more suited to those adventures). Calling this goal COMPLETED!

  • CampNaNo: Interact with cabin mates 5/week: attend write-ins and visit forums once weekly. Secondary goal. Cabin visits:5/5. I didn’t visit the forums the last two weeks, but calling this solid progress based on doing well everywhere else.

  • Career Furtherance: Complete Patreon profile and launch site. Draft CV/cover letter and revise. Assist my Acomplice in his efforts to launch his cottage industry. Tertiary goal. Conversation, dreaming, simmering, brainstorming. I decided to put off joining the workforce, since my Accomplice needs a good deal of help with his business setup and working out a marketing plan – and, as a bonus, this helps me learn these skills for my own future writing plans. A solid if adapted success.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and three evenings each week. Primary goal. Mornings were a bit more hit-or-miss; it was an active month. Evenings – well evenings didn’t happen. Moderate success.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 7 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. Began the Baby Steps to 5K 10 week program; also using the Samsung Health app on my new phone. Not a perfect month, but a new mindset and commitment makes this solid progress.

Leaps of Faith:

  • NEW GOAL! Blogging from A-Z Challenge 2018: Gather links and sketch out base idea for these posts. The links are about half gathered; simmering base ideas. Solid progress.

  • Website/Blog Development: Make basic sketches of new pages; prioritize; begin implementation. Did some work for my Accomplice’s commerce pages – learning, designing, and implementing. Resounding success!

  • Smart Change: Reread Chapters 3 and 4/ complete/worksheets; create an approach plan, going forward. Simmering. Moderate progress.

  • Intuitive Eating: Reread early chapters; consider how to incorporate into Smart Change. Simmering this one, too. Modest progress.

  • Rose and Jeremy novella: Complete Planning/plotting of “Tuesday Afternoon Tea” using The Story Toolkit  and existing notes. Develop one-paragraph sketches for remaining 3-5 stories. No progress whatsoever.
