Sowing Potential: April 23, 2017

Welcome, all!

How has your week been?

On Wednesday, after I posted my update, our new (refurbished) Samsung Galaxy S5 phones arrived – and my world opened up!

Yes, I know. The Galaxy is now up to the S8, so these phones are hardly the latest and the greatest. But, still…my previous phone was an LG Optimus Fuel. It was a nifty little phone when I bought it two years back.

But this new phone – it’s on a whole different level. Just one example: the Samsung Health app. I’m using it so far to track sleep, water and caffeine intake, and activity. Now I can SEE what I’m doing (and not doing), and it’s inspiring me to do more. Yesterday, for instance, my son and I did some hiking in our hometown and at Saratoga National Historical Park. I walked 7.5 miles! And the pictures….they speak for themselves!

Nielson Farm, Saratogal National Historical Park, April 22, 2017

What new worlds have opened up for you, lately?

Note: Goals I engaged with during this session are detailed in this update. For complete lists, see the links below.

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo: Draft The Last House (a Kifo prequel). ~65K. Target: 2,1q67 words/day average to complete by April 30. Primary goal. 47,771/65,000 words (the novel will be longer than the target count). Under 20K left to reach my Camp goal…I think I’ve got this one. =)

  • Trueborn: Complete draft of Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2). Target: 3,333 words/week; add words every day I reach my Camp quota, above, Finish by April 30. Secondary goal. 1,398/3,333 new words for the week, and I finally finished Scene 44/50! It’s ugly, and will need a LOT of revision…but I needed to write and wander my way back into this WIP, so I can live with that! It’s not quite the progress I was hoping for at the beginning of the month, but it is forward motion; I’m satisfied.

Plotting:

  • Story a Day May: Main Project: Create basic sketches for flash fiction stories (999 words/less, with exceptions) exploring July’s Still Nameless: Kifo Island #8, using #StaD prompts. Side Project: Reread Cowled arccreate basic sketches for drabbles (100 word stories) based on existing notes and prompt words. Primary goal. Read latest post at the site; finally started listening to the podcast. Bonus? Julie’s lovely Irish lilt, right here in my house!

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge: http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/p/what-is-blogging-from-to-z.html Confirm scheduling, and add link and branding to each day’s post. Respond to comments daily, and visit 3 other participants at least 6 times/week. Primary goal. Shared and linked through Q: 16/26; R and S posted, but not yet linked or shared; I got busy with Other Things.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, Mindful Monday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee Share posts. Pre-produce posts where possible; aim for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday. Tertiary goal.My Honor to Serve”. Not the best blogging week….

Hometending:

  • Continue adding to Flickr portfolios for this school year as circumstances warrant. Primary goal. Took some more pictures; editing and Flickerizing in progress. Still pending: tagging for albums…

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete two 27 thing flings each room, each week. One 27 thing fling on porch and in yard each week. At least five General Hometending rounds per day, 5 times/week. Secondary goal. Hometending rounds: 5/5 for the week. Yard, porch, bedroom, bathroom, and study complete. Not perfect, but I’ll take it!

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Chatting with all; couples’ workout (tai chi for me/cardio and weights for him); walks with daughter; historical hike with son.

  • CampNaNo: Interact with cabin mates 5/week: attend write-ins and visit forums once weekly. Secondary goal. Cabin visits: 4/5.

  • Career Furtherance: Complete Patreon profile and launch site. Draft CV/cover letter and revise. Assist my Acomplice in his efforts to launch his cottage industry. Tertiary goal. Lots of labeling stuff. Working through the obstacles and setbacks – talked to print shop at Staples and brainstormed ideas.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and three evenings each week. Primary goal. Morning: 6/5 complete; evening 0/3 complete. Evenings have been tricky, since my Accomplice shifted to an early schedule, but my new phone may hold the solution I’ve been looking for.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 7 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. 99: 5/5; 111: 2/2. Strenuous: 6 /7 hours; yardtending; tai chi; hiking.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Smart Change: Reread Chapters 3 and 4/ complete/worksheets; create an approach plan, going forward. No actual worksheet writing here; but my new phone has given me a couple of minor epiphanies on a way forward…

  • Intuitive Eating: Reread early chapters; consider how to incorporate into Smart Change.  Again, the phone may be instrumental to moving forward here.

Sowing Organic Structures: April 19, 2017

Hey there!

How is every little thing going with you?

For me, over the last few days, things have been more settled. We’re still trying to fine-tune my Accomplice’s labels – my printer isn’t quite up to clarity needed for ease of reading, or the labels he chose aren’t best for the job. I’m not sure which yet; I’m going to buy something a bit higher quality, and we’re also researching professional printing services.

In my own writing, I have written my way back to the positive side of this line:

I’m experimenting with something new – time-blocking. Well, maybe not so new, since I did something similar back in school. It’s more like an updated, more realistic version of that, I guess. If you’re interested in exploring it, here’s the link.

It feels good to know I stand on solid-ish ground.

Have you made any exciting progress lately?

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo: Draft The Last House (a Kifo prequel). ~65K. Target: 2,167 words/day average to complete by April 30. Primary goal. 39,378/65,000 words. I was about 6K under target at Sunday’s update, but time-blocking helped me to make up a lot of ground, to the tune of 7,570 words on Sunday! Back on the positive side, and blocked Monday and Tuesday, too.

  • Trueborn: Complete draft of Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2). Target: 3,333 words/week; add words every day I reach my Camp quota, above, Finish by April 30. Secondary goal. 987/3,333 new words for the week. Feels great to be back to this after a week off – and the time away has led to some new insights.

Read latest post at the site; still need to listen to podcast. Cowled: Created Scrivener file; will organize 14,304 words of existing material there, and use drabbles and prompts to extend story and fill in the gaps, based on my rough trajectory.

Revision:

  • The IDIC Romance: On Any Tuesday Night (was First Contact, With Jazz), Complete lesson 2 (Promises) of Holly Lisle’s Revision Course  by April 30. Aim for 20 pages/week analyzed. Primary goal. Finally got back to this! Page 14/89  in progress; 5/20 complete for this week.

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge: Confirm scheduling, and add link and branding to each day’s post. Respond to comments daily, and visit 3 other participants at least 6 times/week. Primary goal. P post scheduled for just after midnight; posts shared and linked through O: 15/26 complete; answered comments on N post. visits made for 0/6 days; that’s a priority for the second half of the week. Posts are listed live at Slices of An Unschooling Life.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, Mindful Monday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee Share posts. Pre-produce posts where possible; aim for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday. Tertiary goal. Tuesday’s hour used for catching up on a-z; still considering a third hour on Saturday or Sunday.

Hometending:

  • Continue adding to Flickr portfolios for this school year as circumstances warrant. Primary goal. Took some pictures. Now to edit, Flickrize, and tag for albums…

Hometending rounds:3/5 for the week. Study; bedroom; bathroom complete.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Time chatting and canoodling with Accomplice (business and workout schedule planning); helping daughter with game account; time outside in the spring rain with son.

  • CampNaNo: Interact with cabin mates 5/week: attend write-ins and visit forums once weekly. Secondary goal. Attended write-in; lots of words; lots of inspiration! Cabin visits: 2/5.

  • Career Furtherance:  Complete Patreon profile and launch site. Draft CV/cover letter and revise. Assist my Acomplice in his efforts to launch his cottage industry. Tertiary goal. Lots of labeling stuff. Working through the obstacles and setbacks.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and three evenings each week. Primary goal. Morning: 3/5 complete; evening 0/3 complete.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 7 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. 99: 3/5; 111: 0/2. Strenuous: 3 hours, 10 minutes/7 hours.

Sowing Stories in Fallow Soil: April 16, 2017

Hey there!

How is life treating you?

For me, it’s been something of a mystery package. I excelled in some areas, and all but ignored others. I had a 6K+ word writing day on Friday, and am still behind with my overall count by nearly that much.

It’s a bit like scrambling up a mountainside. Lots of work, but the overall progress doesn’t necessarily reflect the effort expelled.

Today, the sun is shining intermittently. There’s a warm breeze in the air potent with suggestions of storms and summer. Birds are chattering, and my daughter’s cat is sleeping curled up on a small stack of books in my bedroom window. The house is quiet, and I’m about to spend another hour writing.

For those  who celebrate Easter, Passover, or anything else, may your day be sweet!

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo: Draft The Last House (a Kifo prequel). ~65K. Target: 2,167 words/day average to complete by April 30. Primary goal. 27,120/65,000 words. I was nearly 10K behind on Wednesday; at Saturday midnight, I was a bit over 6K behind, due to a quieter week. I wrote a bit over 6K on Friday, and, even better, the characters are coming to life and adding to their stories.

Info about this year’s challenge is starting to appear on the site for news, still need to listen to the podcast and see if there’s some info there.

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge: Confirm scheduling, and add link and branding to each day’s post. Respond to comments daily, and visit 3 other participants at least 6 times/week. Primary goal. K post up and linked, L and M up, but not linked yet: 11/26 complete; visits made for 0/6 days – yes, I’ve fallen a bit behind this week, but hope to rectify that in the week to come.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, Mindful Monday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee Share posts. Pre-produce posts where possible; aim for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday. Tertiary goal. Thursday’s session had more catch-up than new material; considering a third hour on Saturday or Sunday. Another off week here; had the #SoCS/#weekendcoffeeshare post nearly finished when I altered the format, and didn’t have the energy or time to redo, It’s definitely still a work in progress! On a positive note, here’s my #8sunday post, The Poetry of Creation, and my WIPpet; “I’m Not Qualified”.

Hometending:

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete two 27 thing flings each room, each week. One 27 thing fling on porch and in yard each week. At least five General Hometending rounds per day, 5 times/week. Secondary goal. Hometending rounds 5/5 for the week. Not the best hometending week, but it could have been a lot worse.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Couples’ workout/salad date/shopping with Accomplice. Plans to take advantage of National Park Week’s free admission, and visit some historical sites with my son. Also, a potential family trip to Corning Museum of Glass, and NYS Museum with daughter are on the radar.

  • CampNaNo: Interact with cabin mates 5/week: attend write-ins and visit forums once weekly. Secondary goal. 5/5 Cabin visits. Somehow, I managed everything but the write-in, though I’m not quite sure how!

  • Career Furtherance: Patreon. Complete profile and launch site. Draft CV/cover letter and revise. Assist my Acomplice in his efforts to launch his cottage industry. Tertiary goal. Lots of labeling stuff; lots of steps toward offering his first sauce on my website. I’ve decided to put rejoining the workforce on hold; there’s lots to do to help him, and I don’t think I can do both. Therefore, I’m dropping the CV goal for now.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and three evenings each week. Primary goal. Morning: 4/5 complete; evening 0/3 complete. Not a great week here.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 7 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. 99: 3/5; 111: 1 /2. 3 hours, 10 minutes/7 hours strenuous; hiking; cardio; weights. Fair progress here.

Leaps of Faith:

  • NEW GOAL! Blogging from A-Z Challenge 2018: Gather links and sketch out base idea for these posts. Continued filling in links for planning base list; about 2/3 complete with information-gathering section; simmering how to use this material.

  • Website/Blog Development: Make basic sketches of new pages; prioritize; begin implementation. Worked on commerce aspects, so we can sell my Accomplice’s hot sauce, now that he’s cleared all the hurdles, and can legally do so! Adding images, email, checkout materials. This will be ongoing, and might comprise the whole of my progress here for this month, and until we’ve crossed all i’s and dotted all t’s, so to speak.

Sowing Connection: April 12, 2017

Ever have one of those stretches where the focus has been about nearly everything but your writing goals?

When I first began to approach my writing as a serious life goal, my children were young – 8 and 5. Perhaps naturally, I made a personal oath – my writing was not going to rule the rhythms of my family.

At first, that meant I wrote in little bits and chunks of time when I wasn’t needed. We unschool, which means there’s no curriculum or set lessons – but there’s also no strict schedule or firm artificial structure to the way learning progresses.
The kids are big now. At 15.5, my six-foot-two and still growing son hardly qualifies as a kid, and, as my daughter nears her 13th birthday this summer, she’s growing and maturing so quickly, it’s got my head spinning a bit.

Clearly, they don’t need me nearly as consistently. Sometimes, I have nearly entire days when I’m free to decide just how to spend my time. The kids are passionate about several things each, and they pursue them, often independently.

And then there are the other times…

The times of connection and spontaneous exploration. The lovely morning spent in our suddenly alive front yard beneath the budding lilacs, listening to Rush, R.E.M, Billy Joel, and Melanie Martinez – current favorites for the young people at my house. The trip to the State Museum, and discovering it’s closed for remodeling on Mondays, and the walk around the Empire State Plaze – twice – and visiting a playground with a not-quite-grown girl. Exploring our hometown with my boy, and sharing slices from the local pizza place next to the Hudson River, and a historic replica eighteenth century blockhouse.

All that in addition to the already scheduled Welcome to Night Vale Live Show at The Egg.

These are the times that keep my family connections strong, and build trust with my getting-close-to-adult offspring. Things that come before writing-things, but fill the well so that it runneth over.

My update will reflect that. Am I OK with that?

Absolutely!

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo: Draft The Last House (a Kifo prequel). ~65K. Target: 2,167 words/day average to complete by April 30. Primary goal. 16,842/65,000 words. I’m behind, but I did flesh out the beat sheets for the last four scenes of Act One. This session had other focuses, so I can accept that. The latter part of the week will be focused on writing, so I expect to catch up, and maybe even pull ahead a bit.

Plotting:

  • Story a Day May: Main Project: Create basic sketches for flash fiction stories (999 words/less, with exceptions) exploring July’s Still Nameless: Kifo Island #8, using #StaD prompts. Side Project: Reread Cowled arc;create basic sketches for drabbles (100 word stories) based on existing notes and prompt words. Primary goal. I checked the site for news on this year’s prompts; decided to listen to the podcast and see if there’s some news there.

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge:  Confirm scheduling, and add link and branding to each day’s post. Respond to comments daily, and visit 3 other participants at least 6 times/week. Primary goal. H post up and linked; I up but not linked yet: 9/26 complete; visits made for 0/6 days.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, Mindful Monday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee Share posts. Pre-produce posts where possible; aim for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday. Tertiary goal. Green posts in progress.

Hometending rounds 2/5 for the week.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Welcome to Night Vale “All Hail” Live Show with daughter; local outing with son. More outings planned for the next weeks.

  • CampNaNo: Interact with cabin mates 5/week: attend write-ins and visit forums once weekly. Secondary goal. I passed on the write-in this week; it was a busy Friday -Monday, and Sunday was my slightly headachy, full-moon sleeplessness, recharging day. 2/5 Cabin visits.

  • Career Furtherance: Patreon: Complete profile and launch site. Draft CV/cover letter and revise. Assist my Acomplice in his efforts to launch his cottage industry. Tertiary goal. More labeling stuff for my Accomplice.

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and three evenings each week. Primary goal. Morning: 1/5 complete; evening 0/3 complete.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 7 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. 99: 2/5; 111: 1/2. .5/7 hours strenuous; hiking.

Leaps of Faith:

  • NEW GOAL! Blogging from A-Z Challenge 2018: Gather links and sketch out base idea for these posts. Continued filling in links for planning base list; about 2/3 complete with information-gathering section; simmering how to use this material.

Sowing Abundantly: April 9, 2017

Hey there!

We’re a week into ROW80 Round Two, and nine days into CampNaNoWriMo. Today is a quiet day – at the #AtoZChallenge, and for me. It’s been a whirlwind of activity – our income tax returns came in, and some things we’ve been waiting on during the lean times over the last several months can now happen.

I’m typing this on my new Lenovo Yoga. It’s smaller than my 3 year old model, but faster and more powerful. The small size makes it even easier to tote anywhere I want to go. The screen is the same size as my old one, and the keyboard is virtually identical, so the learning curve wasn’t at all steep.

I’m cleaning my former computer out to pass it along to my Accomplice, after which I’ll clean his netbook out to pass along to Lise.

Oh, and I designed the prototype label for my Accomplice’s hot sauce bottles! We’re getting close to the launch point, now. You can get a sneak peek at the bottom of this post, and read about its creation in my Stream of Consciousness Saturday post, linked below.

With all this going on, it’s probably not surprising that my focus was narrower in the latter part of the week, but…

I did still manage some writing and blogging:

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo: Draft The Last House (a Kifo prequel) . ~65K. Target: 2,167 words/day average to complete by April 30. Primary goal. 16,126/65,000 words. Between blogging, the laptops, and the shopping, I didn’t add any words on Saturday.

  • Trueborn: Complete draft of Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2). Target: 3,333 words/week; add words every day I reach my Camp quota, above, Finish by April 30. Secondary goal. 2,334/3,333 new words for the week. I did well with this until life got busy!

Social Media:

  • #atozchallenge: Confirm scheduling, and add link and branding to each day’s post. Respond to comments daily, and visit 3 other participants at least 3 times/week. Primary goal. All Week Two posts up and linked (through letter G); visits made for 5/6 days. You can find links to all live posts here at Slices of an Unschooling Life. Answered comments; n0t exactly daily, but a few times during the week.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, Mindful Monday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee Share posts. Pre-produce posts where possible; aim for one hour every Tuesday and Thursday. Tertiary goal. I missed the Skywatch; but all others complete – follow the links up top to check out these fine posts!

Hometending rounds; 5/5 for the week. Living room and porch done; 10 items in yard. Not a great hometending week.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. In spades….that’s what I did instead of hometending, so I can’t be sorry!

  • CampNaNo: Interact with cabin mates 5/week: attend write-ins and visit forums once weekly. Secondary goal. Posted to cabin 5/5 days; write-in, and visited the fanfiction thread in the Campfire Circle forum. Another big win!

  • Career Furtherance:  Complete Patreon profile and launch site. Draft CV/cover letter and revise. Assist Accomplice with launching his cottage hot sauce industry. Tertiary goal. See below; finalized his logo, paid for it, and designed a label prototype we both love, and which is getting good reviews from those who’ve seen it. Opinions?

Selftending:

  • Journal and meditate five mornings and three evenings each week. Primary goal. I lost track, but it wasn’t good. Too many Other Things.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 7 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. I think I got close, but I honestly lost track.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Website/Blog Development: Make basic sketches of new pages; prioritize; begin implementation. Simmering….

Sowing Seeds: April 5, 2017

Hey there!

Okay, we’re two days into this new round, and I’m getting to know my April goals, and Tim, Drea, and Rebekkah – the three POV characters in my CampNaNoWriMo project, The Last House – a Kifo Island prequel. Clicking the link will take you to my current progress on that front.

It’s been an eventful two days, in quiet family ways. I’m a bit behind my projected count right now, because of all the eventfulness, but I’m on track for my Blogging from A-Z and other blogging goals, so I expect to be caught up by the end of the day, and maybe even pad things just a bit over the rest of the week, since Monday is the Welcome to Night Vale live show I’ll be attending with my daughter, and I may not do much writing that day.

I’m going through my seed collection (literally and figuratively), and deciding what to sow first…

Do you have showers of April goals, too?

Are you hoping they bloom into beautiful fruition before May comes?

Welcome, April!

It’s always good to see you. The earth is warming; the days are growing longer – and that means it’s time for me to toss some new goals into fertile soil, and sprout progress!
