A Year of Presence: 2016 Writing Goals End of October Update

About this year’s #oneword.

Note: I update periodically throughout the year, but at least at the end of each quarter. I’ll adapt, change, add, or delete as my life and progress indicate. This post covers progress only through October 31, 2016; further progress will be contained in future updates.

My ROW80 Round and Monthly goals are derived from these goals.

Writing:

  • Write at least 1 story and submit at least 1 story each month in 2016. Fan fiction and self-publishing are acceptable. 23 new stories written; three submitted (one accepted; one rejected; one still waiting.)
  • Kifo Island Chronicles: Write 3 new novels in this series as April, June and July NaNo projects. Write 31 new flash stories for #STaD May; these can be the basis of these or future Kifo stories. A Rising Tide (1/3) completed during JuNoWriMo. The Far Shore (2/3) in drafting; Scene 8/24 in progress; 21,533/65,000 words. Forward progress very slow, but moving.

Plotting:

  • Plan and Plot “Peach Liqueur Love” prequel story for Chicago Tribune Writing Contest.

  • The IDIC Romance: Plot 25 April and 30 September stories. Completed.

  • Kifo Island Chonicles: Plan and plot 3 novels and 31 flash fiction stories. Create timeline and ‘series bible’. All novels/stories planned/plotted; rough materials for timeline and bible created in the process.

  • Trueborn Warp/Weft Series: Plan/plot Weft #3 (Blood and Breath?) for November. Create rough timelime, focusing on points where the series’ events intersect. Setting aside for 2017.

  • Plan/plot other projects as needed to meet writing and submission goals. Goal completed!

Revision:

  • Submit to crit group weekly; critique and beta others’ work to gain insight into my own. Critique group on hold until January, so goal more or less completed.

  • Revise “Peach Liqueur Love” and its prequel story. Goal completed!

  • The IDIC Romance: Revise “Slow Jazz Awakening” and five other stories.

  • Poetry: Find information about revising poetry. Experiment with revisions of existing Trek poems. Nothing new.

  • Chameleon’s Dish (Trueborn Weft : Complete first pass revision; reread and create plan for revision pass 1.5 (cohesion, consistency, etc.) Setting aside until at least 2017.

Social Media:

  • Blog Maintenance: Adapt and keep to regular posting schedule; answer comments, and return visits at least twice weekly. Clear backlog of comments and spam folder. Transitioning to my website; that’s the goal for Round Four.
  • ROW80: Sponsor duties up-to-date throughout the year, including four sponsor posts. Done.
  • Make regular visits to others participating in hops and challenges I’ve joined. Fair. Not bad; not great.
  • Connect on social media in a natural way that feeds creativity and my passion for sharing thought and experience. Ebbs and flows; but goal completed.
  • Redesign blog, with a focus on bringing in the various facets of my life in a more cohesive manner. Incorporate the best of The Unfettered Life and shanjeniah’s Trueborn Jottings, and let those blogs go. The blog took a backseat to the website, which is developing; more integration in 2017.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork, testing, etc. Create Flickr portfolios, by year, or roughly so, for both children. Lise’s portfolio added to; Miah’s begun; neither sorted or culled. Moving along.

  • Complete resets/reorganizations: study, family room, porch/playroom, and kitchen. All but the kitchen moving along; I have a system for forward momentum that’s working well. Moving the kitchen to 2017.
  • Personal Administration: Clean, organize, and back up all laptop files; sort email folders; delete excess. Progress; breaking it down to smaller bites. I won’t finish this before the year ends, so the adapted goal: Create a plan to have this completed by the time I’m ready for a computer upgrade (maybe after tax time).
  • Yard Beautification: Plant edibles and cutting flowers in season; maintain in a presentable manner; declutter outgrown kid-things and random life debris. A little work outside.
  • Photo digitalization: Scan box of travel photos; save in organized files with backup. Nothing new. Adapted goal: Make plan for scanning and organizing all photos in 2017.
  • Go through all online subscriptions; cancel those we no longer need; at least one each week until done. Canceled two.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. This remains a fundamental and easy goal to maintain.

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Yes to both. Lots of stuff: parties, historic sites; museums; stores; and more.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group and beta reading. Goal completed; crit group on break until January.

  • Paying it Forward: Offer beta reading, reviews, and promotional posts for other writers. Some beta reading, and a promo post. No reviews this month.
  • Reconnect with friends I haven’t seen in longer than I like. Nothing new.

Selftending:

  • Smart Change: Work through at least one habit change using these methods. Nothing new.
  • Write in Abundance, Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Gradually increase meditation to ten minutes, twice daily. Explore one new meditative practice each month. Meditating/journals several days a week. Happy with the meditative practices I’ve developed thus far.

  • T’ai chi: Develop a sustainable independent practice; learn the 24 form so I can do it on my own. Nothing new.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 90 minutes moderate physical activity 6 days weekly, and more strenuous activities building to thrice weekly by year’s end. I’m up to 60/minutes, 5 days/week, and 75 minutes thrice a week.

  • Write twice-monthly health-centered blog posts. Dropping this goal for 2016.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Write and submit one story each month (not necessarily the same story). I’ve attained this with fan fiction. Three new submissions.

  • Submit fan fiction.Nothing new submitted.

  • Self-publish “A Splash of Red”; experimental project. Cover image in simmering stage.

  • Poetry Chapbooks: Do rough setup for Trek poetry chapbook. This is experimental. Gathering poems. The setup likely to wait for 2017. A couple of new poems written.

Wrapping Up the Present: March 27, 2016

Yes, I know: Round One is in the books. But the thing is, I’m still writing, and I made some progress between midnight Tuesday, my normal cut off for midweek updates, and midnight Thursday, which officially capped off the round. I also set monthly goals, because my mind tells me to. I’ll be working on these goals for the remainder of March, and probably updating and adapting them for April, as well.

All that to say that you get an extra update from me, to account for the tail ends of the wrapping ribbon, so to speak….

Are you a ROWer, either current or lapsed? Never ROWed, but want to learn more? Come join us next month, for Round Two!

Writing:

Plotting:

  • The IDIC Romance: Complete plot/pinch points for 26 stories. Draft Post Template. Revise all 26 stories; draft Week One and Two expansion stories; post to fan fiction site. Set Up Week One and Two posts; polish and schedule Week One. 15/26 plot/pinch complete: (O; end of Week Three). Vignette 4/26 revised vignettes in progress. (D). Moving along, finally!

  • April CampNaNo: Create a planning schedule; complete all planning and plotting for A Rising Tide by the end of the month. 24/24 Master Scene Profiles completed. All that’s left is organizing the remainder of the Scrivener binder, and a few finishing touches.

  • Sort all existing poetry into broad categories for future projects. Saving for Round Two.

Revisions:

  • The IDIC Romance: “First Contact, With Jazz”: Submit to crit group; assess and apply suggestions as indicated; read revised version aloud. Tweak as needed; and offer to at least three betas. Not as far as I’d hoped to be, but good progress made.

Blogging/Social Media:

  • Revise, post, and initiate new blogging schedule; keep all posts current. Will revisit later in the year.

  • Answer blog comments and make visits, at least thrice weekly. I may not get to them all; but I will get to some. 3/3.

  • ROW80: Keep visits and updates current; draft, revise, and submit Round Two Sponsor Post. Still brainstorming and simmering my sponsor post.

  • Prepare and submit bio for A-Z, where I will be a part-time minion for Holton’s Heroes – my first time volunteering in this challenge! =)

  • Change one thing weekly in my blog layout. Badges! I have new badges!

  • Clear out Inbox and Archive twice weekly; Weed through Transactions in Progress, keeping only currently useful items. Better than it might have been.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork. Draft IHIPs and attend to district’s Peer Review issue;create 2015-2016 Flickr portfolios for both kids, and begin adding to them.
  • Continue decluttering/beautification projects; in home and/or yard, five days weekly. Continue making improvements to our home and our quality of life. General maintenance; organization; decluttering. 4/5. On target for the week.
  • Go through all online subscriptions; cancel those we no longer need; at least one each week.

Lifetending:

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Write-in for me; Zootopia with the kids.

  • NNWM local group: Attend write-ins regularly, and check in on the Facebook group as inspired. Read and critique both projects I’ve been hanging onto; submit and critique weekly for our small crit group. Kept current with crit group; read through novel beta.
  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week.
  • Complete 6 pending book reviews. A big focus for Round Two!

Selftending

  • Write in Abundance, Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Meditate seven times weekly, including one eating meditation. Explore one new meditative practice. Journaling 5/7; meditation: 5/7.

  • Tai chi practice: One class and one at-home practice each week. This was shaky, but getting better now.

  • For March: Swim twice, at least 500 meters (10 complete laps at Y pool). Didn’t happen, but there’s still some month, so I might get there once.

  • Focus on sprints of activity daily (hometending, dancing, tai chi, walking, whatever), and more strenuous activities I enjoy, like swimming and hiking, twice monthly. Write twice-monthly health-centered blog posts. Tai chi was strenuous; 2/2. Also walking, dancing, and hometending this week.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Fan fiction stuff: Polish “Mission: Accomplished”, and “Scavenger Hunt”, and offer at Triaxian Silk and/or FanFiction.net. Find a beta reader or two for “Mission” at one or both sites prior to submitting. Second pass for “Scavenger” revisions in progress. “Mission” beta in progress.

  • Begin beta reading of Stained by Ashes; aim for 1 chapter/week this month. I’ve gotten the email with the story file; haven’t opened it yet.

Still Present: March 23, 2016

Here we are, in the last 24 hours of Round One. And me?

Not ready to call it a wrap just yet. I’ve got things to do, and ideas popping all over the place. This would be a bad time to just stop and take a break, and I don’t want one.

If you’re winding things up now, how did it go? If you’re writing on like me, what’s your main focus?

Either way, I hope to see you next month, for Round Two!

Writing:

Vignette 3/26 revised vignettes completed. (C). Moving along; primary focus once NaNo plotting is complete.

  • April CampNaNo: Create a planning schedule; complete all planning and plotting for A Rising Tide by the end of the month. 18/24 Master Scene Profiles completed. Once that’s done (probably later today), all that’s left is organizing the remainder of the Scrivener binder.

  • Prepare and submit bio for A-Z, where I will be a part-time minion .

  • Go through all online subscriptions; cancel those we no longer need; at least one each week.

Lifetending:

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Write-in for me; Zootopia planned for later today.

  • NNWM local group: Attend write-ins regularly, and check in on the Facebook group as inspired. Read and critique both projects I’ve been hanging onto; submit and critique weekly for our small crit group. All pieces read; 2/3 finished; 1/3 comments pending.
  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week.
  • Complete 6 pending book reviews. A big focus for Round Two!

Selftending:

  • Write in Abundance, Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Meditate seven times weekly, including one eating meditation. Explore one new meditative practice. Journaling 3/7; meditation: 3/7.

  • Tai chi practice: One class and one at-home practice each week. This was shaky, but getting better now. Class Tuesday.

  • For March: Swim twice, at least 500 meters (10 complete laps at Y pool). Hoping to work that in this week…

First pass for “Scavenger” revisions complete. Have non-site fans willing to beta (thanks, Fallon and Erin!); “Mission” in progress.

  • Begin beta reading of Stained by Ashes; aim for 1 chapter/week this month. I’ve gotten the email with the story file; haven’t opened it yet.

Presently Penultimate: March 20, 2016

Can you believe that it’s already the next-to-last update of Round One? How did that happen?

Oh, right write.

I’ve been:

  • Writing.

  • Critiquing.

  • Revising.

  • Planning.

  • Plotting.

  • Hometending.

  • Learning.

  • Growing.

  • Being a mom, and a wife.

Y’know -living.

As we move on to the end of this 80 days, I can see that I won’t finish everything on my Round One goals list. A few things, I won’t have started; a few I’ll finish. Most are somewhere in the middle, moving along at their own natural paces, part of my living.

I don’t see finishing a goal as – well, the goal. Or not all of it, anyway. For me, it’s like the Grand Canyon hike during which my Accomplice proposed to me, and which inspired two characters from my soon-to-be birthed novel-in-plotting, Rising Tide (I just now changed the title from Shifting Tides). It’s far less about the “getting there”, and far more about the journey, and the learning to be had while moving through the process.

How about you? Are you focused on ticking things off that goals list, do you immerse yourself in the doing, or somewhere in between?
