Reflections of Prosperity: January 1, 2017

Hey there!

It’s time to get started with a new year’s worth of goals….

But, before I do that, I’ve got one more bit of business to wrap up from last month.

It was a good month, all in all. Lots of blue, lots of green, and some red, but not too much. It helped that I stayed busy during the break, even when I left lots of time for reading fan fiction, watching the first half of a Downton Abbey marathon, and being with my beloveds.

But now, it’s time to get back to full functionality, and that means it’s time to post this final update for 2016, and then move along to my 2017 goals.

A Year of Presence: 2016 Writing Final Update

Happy New Year!

So, what’s the coolest thing that happened to you in 2016?

I’m not sure I’m really ready to answer that question, it’s just that this year just past contained a lot of not-so sweet things people have been focused on, and I wanted to give us all a chance to find something sweeter.

That will be a focus for me, too – even as I contemplate ways to protect those who may be more at risk in a social climate that’s potentially more dangerous for a great many of our citizens. I don’t believe in fighting against; I would rather find things to strive for.

So that will be my focus for 2017. Striving for the thing I value most: peace. Not for only some; but for all. And peace that comes first with and from within myself.

Peace comes when one feels fulfilled, engaged in worthwhile activities. It can also come from assessing progress, and that brings me to today’s first mission of this brand-new baby year: assessing my 2016 goals, and my progress in meeting them, in preparation for establishing my 2017 goals.

Ready? OK, here we go!

There’s a lot of green here, a good deal of blue, and a smattering of red….all in all, a pretty good year…and, as always, room for improvement.

My ROW80 Round and Monthly goals were derived from this master list. To review these, follow the links below.

Writing:

  • Write at least 1 story and submit at least 1 story each month in 2016. Fan fiction and self-publishing are acceptable. 23 new stories written; three submitted in October (one accepted; two rejected.) One fan fiction poem submitted to two sites.
  • Kifo Island Chronicles: Write 3 new novels in this series as April, June and July NaNo projects. Write 31 new flash stories for #STaD May; these can be the basis of these or future Kifo stories. A Rising Tide and Tsunamis (2/3) completed during JuNoWriMo. The Far Shore (2/3) in drafting; Scene 11/24 complete; . 36,792// ~65,000 words. Forward progress slow, but moving.
  • Poets on the Page: Write 31 new poems in October. 31/31. It took longer than a month, but goal completed.

Plotting:

  • Plan and Plot “Peach Liqueur Love” prequel story for Chicago Tribune Writing Contest.

  • The IDIC Romance: Plot 25 April and 30 September stories.

  • Kifo Island Chonicles: Plan and plot 3 novels and 31 flash fiction stories. Create timeline and ‘series bible’. All novels/stories planned/plotted; rough materials for timeline and bible created in the process; further progress on this being back burnered (BB) till 2017.Modified goal complete.

  • Trueborn Warp/Weft Series: Plan/plot Weft #3 (Blood and Breath?) for November. Create rough timelime, focusing on points where the series’ events intersect. BB for 2017.

  • Plan/plot other projects as needed to meet writing and submission goals. Goal completed!

Revision:

  • Submit to crit group weekly; critique and beta others’ work to gain insight into my own. Critique group BB until January; modified goal completed.

  • Revise “Peach Liqueur Love” and its prequel story. Goal completed!

  • The IDIC Romance: Revise “Slow Jazz Awakening” and five other stories. Resumed progress, slowly.

  • Kifo Island Chronicles: Create revision plan for Sea Changes; print and readthrough for Transitions; print Generations. Setting aside for 2017.

  • Poetry: Find information about revising poetry. Experiment with revisions of existing Trek poems. Nothing new; BBing till 2017.

Social Media:

  • Blog Maintenance: Adapt and keep to regular posting schedule; answer comments, and return visits at least twice weekly. Clear backlog of comments and spam folder. Did okay with my the comments, but I want a better system for 2017.
  • ROW80: Sponsor duties up-to-date throughout the year, including four sponsor posts.
  • Make regular visits to others participating in hops and challenges I’ve joined. Fair. Not bad; not great. Same story as last month.
  • Connect on social media in a natural way that feeds creativity and my passion for sharing thought and experience. Ebbs and flows; but goal completed.
  • Redesign blog, with a focus on bringing in the various facets of my life in a more cohesive manner. Incorporate the best of The Unfettered Life and shanjeniah’s Trueborn Jottings, and let those blogs go. The blog took a backseat to the website, which is developing; more integration in 2017.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork, testing, etc. Create Flickr portfolios, by year, or roughly so, for both children. Good progress; 2017 will bring more.

  • Complete resets/reorganizations: study, family room, porch/playroom, and kitchen. All moving along; I have a system for forward momentum that’s working well. I’d moved the kitchen to 2017, but, with the weather getting colder, I’ve shifted from the porch to the kitchen.
  • Personal Administration: Clean, organize, and back up all laptop files; sort email folders; delete excess. Progress; breaking it down to smaller bites. I won’t finish this before the year ends, so the adapted goal: Create a plan to have this completed by the time I’m ready for a computer upgrade (maybe after tax time).
  • Yard Beautification: Plant edibles and cutting flowers in season; maintain in a presentable manner; declutter outgrown kid-things and random life debris. A little more work outside.
  • Photo digitalization: Scan box of travel photos; save in organized files with backup. Nothing new. Adapted goal: Make plan for scanning and organizing all photos in 2017.
  • Go through all online subscriptions; cancel those we no longer need. I think I’ve gotten them all, for the moment. Goal completed.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. This remains a fundamental and easy goal to maintain.

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. More touring, museum, parties, NaNo-related activities.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group and beta reading.

  • Paying it Forward: Offer beta reading, reviews, and promotional posts for other writers. Some beta reading, and a promo post. Goal completed.
  • Reconnect with friends I haven’t seen in longer than I like.

Selftending:

  • Smart Change: Work through at least one habit change using these methods. BB till 2017.
  • Write in Abundance, Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Gradually increase meditation to ten minutes, twice daily. Explore one new meditative practice each month. Meditating/journals several days a week. Happy with the meditative practices I’ve developed thus far. Solid progress.

  • T’ai chi: Develop a sustainable independent practice; learn the 24 form so I can do it on my own. Nothing new; BB until 2017.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 90 minutes moderate physical activity 6 days weekly, and more strenuous activities building to thrice weekly by year’s end. Up to 80/minutes, 5 days/week, and 90 minutes 4 days/week. Solid progress.

  • Write twice-monthly health-centered blog posts. Dropping this goal for 2016.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Write and submit one story each month (not necessarily the same story).

  • Submit fan fiction. Yes. “The Night Before Christmas” poem, to fanfiction.net and Ad Astra. Goal completed.

  • Self-publish “A Splash of Red”; experimental project. Cover image in simmering stage.

  • Poetry Chapbooks: Do rough setup for Trek poetry chapbook. This is experimental. Gathering poems. The setup likely to wait for 2017.

The Prosperity Principle: December 28, 2016

Hey there!

Welcome to my second ROW80 Interlude Post. I’m moving along; focusing on just a thing or two at a time rather than the wide-angle. I’m reasonably sure I won’t finish everything on my list, but I will wrap up a couple more, and move others closer to the completion point.

In the space between a quiet family Christmas and the new year, I’m enjoying this combination of finishing up existing goals within my grasp, and, at the same time, reaching a little higher as I move through the process of setting goals and objectives for 2017.

It’s a kind of prosperity, this time…prosperity I’m creating myself.

I added a few words to The Far Shore, so I thought I’d give you a little taste…

Holding her imagined actions in mind, Ubunta began reaching and digging her way down through the rocks. It was going to take longer than she’d thought, but she was succeeding, and she was tucked in under the boardwalk that ran above.

Week Two: Added photos for B-G posts (so much fun going through our pictorial history!) 6/6. Created folders for these posts; added images to all. Goal-Oriented Prosperity: ROW80 Round Four Final Update; 2016

My goal for Round Four was to take stock, gather in loose ends, and set things up for next year. I think I’ve done well, even if my reach exceeded my grasp in some areas….

The Prosperity of Presence (or is that Presents?): December 25, 2016

Hey there!

If you’re observing a holiday this week, may it dawn brightly, pass in delight, and end in soft wonder. If you’re not celebrating – well, may your day to day life bring you joy and wonder, too!

Yes, I do know that the round is officially over – but I work best with monthly goals, and a steady rhythm for accountability. Don’t worry; I am moving forward at a more relaxed pace – but I love the moving forward, and a week and a half of down time would be more like torment than rest, when I have ideas churning away in my head, so….here I am!

Most of my focus has been on planning for next year’s writing, revising, and administrative details – file sorting, holiday provisioning, hometending…and family time. I’ve also been rereading some of my existing fan fiction as I sorted and filed.

In the midst of the uncertainty in our finances…a windfall of sorts. My Accomplice realized that we were paying about twice as much for our life insurance policies as we needed to, particularly now that the children are no longer so young that they’ll be dependent upon us for many more years. So he shopped around, and found a much more affordable plan with adequate coverage, and we cashed in the existing policy’s value.

Most of the money is already earmarked, but we’ve budgeted in a few treats for everyone along the way. It will be a simple holiday, but there will also be some magic.

What does holiday magic mean to you?

Whatever it is, may you have and share it in abundance!

Plotting:

  • Draft my basic 2017 goals/schedule. Primary goal.  Aeon Timeline;Expanding February projects into one-sentence goal statements; 2/12 in progress. New timeline created; February goals in process; 2/12 months.

Revision:

  • Philodosia”(Hamiltoninspired alternate history): Revise and print a nice copy of Scene One, “A Matter of Honor” for my daughter’s Christmas gift. Side goal. Simmering was a good idea, as this is a much improved version. I even made it a cover and a dedication, and autographed it for her. ❤

Social Media:

  • Interaction: Visit website, blog, ROW80, Albany NNWM and Yakon Village FB pages; ff.net; Twitter; Instagram; and Pinterest weekly, each site. Secondary goal. Thursday/Monday focus. Holiday and family stuff took precedence.
  • Continue in situ website design, with a focus on transitioning to it as my prime online home in 2017. Prepare countdown posts for this blog, and post with link. Post one reblog and two snippets each week. This is a Sunday/Wednesday focus. Tertiary goal. Simmering. WIPpet posted: To Sleep for Real. And second reblog in progress; and that’s as far as I got this week.

Hometending:

  • Complete resets/reorganizations: study, family room, and kitchen. Use the 27 Thing Fling for structure/5 each per week. Add in 25 cycles a week for random indoor/outdoor tidying/hometending. Secondary goal. Study: 3/5; Family: 1/5. Kitchen: 0/5. Indoor random; 33ish/25. More focus given to those things that would nurture the holiday spirit; I’ll get back to a more typical routine this week.

  • Personal Administration: Clean, organize, and back up all OneDrive Move to Yogical, Stuff to Look At, and The IDIC Romance files. Maintain email below 99 messages. Cull/organize Writing Stuff email folder. Tertiary goal. Stuff to Look At folder emptied and deleted. Fourth and final sort of IDIC folders complete; moved to Fiction directory. Began with 1,724 Writing Stuff messages; down to 1,350. Now that the rest of this goal is complete, I can focus on this portion.

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings and at-home activities (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Conversation; canoodling; cuddling; nail painting; workout; dinner; music.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly online and in person. Secondary goal. Visited page; write-in goodness.

 Selftending:

  • Journal six times each week. Meditation six mornings, and three evenings. Primary goal. 4/6 morning; 0/3 evening. Fairly well in the mornings, considering the holiday.

  • Fitness: Get a cumulative total of at least 80 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly, 90 minutes 4 days weekly. Secondary goal. 80 min: 6/5; 90 min: 5/4. With the preparations, this was a simple matter.

  • Tai chi class, swimming, strength, and/or cardio training for a cumulative total of eight hours. Tertiary goal. Cardio/strength workout at Y: 3/8 hours. Got another hour here; workout with my Accomplice.

Leaps of Faith:

Prosperity. Diversified: December 21, 2016

Hey there!

Here we are, just about to the end of the final round of 2016!

Since I like to use the entire round, which officially ends at midnight. My final Round Four update will be posted here on Sunday.

We’re easing into the Christmas spirit. With our current family financial situation, it will be a day more of togetherness than acquisition, and that’s all right. We’ve put some effort into getting a few things for our daughter, who is nearly twelve-and-a-half. She’s content with much less than she was even last year, but still young enough that gifts bring her great joy.

It’s now well into Wednesday afternoon. I’ve had a good sleep, conversation with my Accomplice and Lise, listened to a chapter of Alexander Hamilton while having my nails painted because Lise loves to paint them and I like this color. Once they dried, I sorted some email, because I can’t listen and do writing or revising tasks without losing track of one or the other. I can sort mail, edit pictures, and the like, though, so it’s a good time to tackle those details.

I’ve also watched the first 3 episodes of Enterprise, and reread King of Shreds and Patches, my fan fiction redo of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I have a new warm winter coat, gloves, and cozy hoodie. All of these are my “Christmas presents”.

I’ll wrap this up with a snippet of new writing on The Far Shore, then on to the update:

Was she doing the wrong thing, attempting to save such a child?

In the moment the question flashed in her mind, Ubunta noticed something metallic flashing through the rocks beneath her. It was too far to identify right away, but metal that hadn’t rusted was rare here, from what she had seen. Rare, and therefore possibly valuable…

Note: Goals I engaged with this session appear in this update. Links to full goals updates below.

Bits of Prosperity: December 18, 2016

Hey there!

I tend to be the optimistic type – but not in an ostrich-hiding-out way, but rather in a focusing-on-the-positive helps me find new ways to add to it. When I get fixated just on what’s wrong, I tend to get all mired up in that place.

So, in that vein…

We had a little windfall this week – a small tax rebate. It’s enough to cover a few essentials – I’ll be getting a winter coat tomorrow – I haven’t had one for a couple of years. Last winter, when money was more plentiful, it didn’t really get cold or snowy, but this year seems to be different already, and I’ll be grateful for the added warmth.

It was also a good time for my Accomplice not to be working, since the weather was iffy, and he didn’t have to drive in it. We went for a workout on Wednesday. We’d gotten out of the habit with his variable work schedule, so that was connecting and happy.

He also cooks when he’s home. Me? I’d rather play with words. The kids tend to like to get their own meals, so I eat better when the chef’s home. Saturday, he made a batch of hot sauce; once we can afford to have labels made and liability insurance purchased, he’ll have a small inventory ready to go.

I’m also busy creating an inventory – and the foundations of a business. Since it’s the middle of the month, or thereabouts, I’m trimming my December goals, to focus on those that are my current priorities.

Since this will be a longish post, I’m going to give you a snippet, then step out of the way of my own progress – but first, I’d love to know what bits of prosperity have fallen into your week?

From The Far Shore (Kifo Island #5); Scene Ten:

“Why am I asking myself these questions, when I’m probably never going to have the answers?”

But she didn’t have an answer for that, either. All she had was an unused pregnancy test and too many questions. Those, and a broken heart.

Note: I list the goals I interacted with during the current session.  Complete goals lists are linked below.

Writing:

  • Kifo Island: Complete draft of The Far Shore (KIC#5); 24 Scenes, ~65,000 words. Primary goal. 2,756 new words; Scene 10/24 in progress. 32,711/~65,000 words/
  • Blogging From A to Z April Challenge: Continue writing poems/drafting posts, on a rotating-week cycle. Secondary goal. Week Two: F and G essays drafted: 6/6. Week Four: N, O, and P poems drafted; 3/6. Read instructions and topic for PQ”; simmering, 4/6.

Plotting:

  • Draft my basic 2017 goals/schedule. Primary goal. Color-coded/organizing brainstormed possibilities for March-December; 12/12 months complete. Simmering.

  • #atozchallenge: Add elements/ links/setup for posts in rotation; move to blog drafting interface. New side goal. Week One: Added two photos. Created an A-Z image file directory and folder for the A post; 1/1 completed; 1/26 overall. Week Five: Moved all poem tutorials for letters T-Z to planning page; 7/7 for the week, this step complete for 26/26 posts.

Revision:

  • The IDIC Romance: Finish revisionFirst Contact, With Jazz and get it in the hands of waiting betas. Revise Chapters 4-6 of A Backdrop of Stars and review 1-3. Primary goal; ABOS: Completed first revision pass for Chapter 1/3, “Returns and Remembrances;” reread Chapter 2/3 “Clinging to One Another,” color-coding for first revision pass complete. “FC;WJ”: I’ve decided to restructure, and seriously tighten. Next revision pass for segments of Scenes One and Two, now the opening scene. Now have revised/restructured Scenes One Three, with more to go from these two original scenes (it’s complicated)! Things will be a bit chaotic as I rejigger, but I expect the result to be much lovelier.

  • Self-Publication: Revise/polish “A Splash of Red”; offer for critique readers. Secondary goal. Setting it aside to focus on in January.

  • Kifo Island: Revise Sea Changes scenes 5-8 in preparation for submitting to critique group. Tertiary goal. This probably isn’t going to happen this month, but since I have at least two scenes which two of my partners haven’t gotten to yet, I’m OK with taking a couple of weeks in January to get moving on this.

  • Philodosia”(Hamilton-inspired alternate history): Revise and print a nice copy of Scene One, “A Matter of Honor” for my daughter’s Christmas gift. Side goal. Color-coded for first post-rejection revision pass; simmering.

Social Media:

  • Make 3 visits to others participants in each hop/challenge I’ve joined. This will be a Thursday/Monday focus. Primary goal. Visited 3 #weekendcoffeeshare; #SoCS, #ROW80 Sunday. Wednesday, and #8sunday and all WIPpet Wednesday. participants. Goal completed for the week – hooray!

  • Interaction: Visit website, blog, ROW80, Albany NNWM and Yakon Village FB pages; ff.net; Twitter; Instagram; and Pinterest weekly, each site. Secondary goal. Thursday/Monday focus. Another goal completed!
  • Continue in situ website design, with a focus on transitioning to it as my prime online home in 2017. Prepare countdown posts for this blog, and post with link. Post one reblog and two snippets each week. This is a Sunday/Wednesday focus. Tertiary goal. Discovered I can do a lot of setup while listening to podcasts, and thinking I may do this once or twice a week. Made my first efforts at countdown posts – see widget in sidebar. Not really satisfied, but simmering. This session; WIPpet: Your Records Say”; #8sunday: Glimpses of Him scheduled and linked. Edited images for next 2 Skywatch Friday/#weekendcoffeeshare posts. Reblog post in progress.

Hometending:

  • Complete resets/reorganizations: study, family room, and kitchen. Use the 27 Thing Fling for structure/5 each per week. Add in 25 cycles a week for random indoor/outdoor tidying/hometending. Secondary goal. Study: 5/5; Family: 5/5. Kitchen: 3/5 (Accomplice tends to take it over when he’s not working, which makes it a bit harder to get to). Indoor random; 25/25.

  • Personal Administration: Clean, organize, and back up all OneDrive Move to Yogical, Stuff to Look At, and The IDIC Romance files. Maintain email below 99 messages. Cull/organize Writing Stuff email folder. Tertiary goal. Email back in sane parameters! Began organizing Writing Stuff into more specific folders; Began with 2,150; now at 1,724. Started secondary sorting of IDIC; Went through Arcs in Progress and Boldly Go folders; began One-Offs (actually, most of them can fit into existing arcs); 3/6 folders in progress.

Lifetending:

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Continue planning/ attending outings and at-home activities (personal and family) as desired. Primary goal. Conversation; podcasts; planning; canoodling.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly online and in person. Secondary goal. Visited page.

Selftending:

  • Journal six times each week. Meditation six mornings, and three evenings. Primary goal. 6/6 morning; 1/3 evening.

  • Fitness: Get a cumulative total of at least 80 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly, 90 minutes 4 days weekly. Secondary goal. 80 min: 6/5; 90 min: 5/4. Wahoo!

  • Tai chi class, swimming, strength, and/or cardio training for a cumulative total of eight hours. Tertiary goal. Cardio/strength workout at Y: 2/8 hours.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Update my Writing Kanban board. Tertiary goal. Cleaning my work table in order to get to the board; surveyed and simmering.

  • Listen: Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Side goal. Through Chapter 5/19; 11% complete. I was waiting to finish the Trek movies, the reports, and catch up on the Welcome to Night Vale podcast so I could listen to Episode 100 with Lise. Now that I’ve done all of those, this will be my primary focus.
