It’s (Nearly) A Wrap!: 2014 Writing Goals

Click the icon to learn more about ROW80!

How do you say farewell to the outgoing year, and welcome in a new one? Do you have goals, or fly more by the seat of your pants into a wide-open future? Do you feel that everything is more or less the same, from one year to the next?

As the last days of 2014 unfurl, I’m drafting the final five scenes of Perchance to Dream, my last “hanging WIP” (incomplete draft). If I finish it before midnight on Wednesday, this will be the first year since I began writing seriously that I’ve had this “clean slate”. I’ll be able to begin 2015 with all of my projects ready for the next stage of creation.

I think that’s pretty cool!

Since 2012, I’ve framed my writing goals using Kait Nolans wonderful A Round of Words in 80 Days. Much more than a writing challenge, ROW80 is an amazing online writing community, a resource, and a means to track progress, refine goals, and be accountable for moving toward them (Round 1 2015 starts on January 5, if you’re interested in joining us!).

At the beginning of 2014, I set annual goals, using a long-term list I created in Kristen Lamb‘s excellent Blogging for Brand class. Now, at the end of the year, let’s peek back and see where I’ve ended up….which will help me to set my Big Picture Goals for 2015.

Into the Time Machine we go…

2014 Blogging:

Completed:

Build positive blogging habits – post regularly, answer comments.

  • Comments still more hit-or-miss than I’d like. Something to address.

  • Posting is better; mostly regular.

Overhaul sidebar for Trueborn Jottings (it’s the least noxious!).

  • Done- but thinking this blog will expire in 2015, and be merged into my website-to-be.

Add all useful bits, templates, links, etc, for each feature to Master Resource File.

  • Done, but now use templates, instead. Good learning experience.

Underway:

Focus on layout and design aspects of my Blogging Action Plan.

  • Not so much…

Build positive blogging habits –build queues, and share diversely.

  • Still more hit-or-miss than I’d like. Something to address.

Brainstorm what I want in a website; move The Unfettered Life to a spiffy new home.

  • Not much written, but a lot of beneath the surface pondering.

  • TUL will be incorporated into the website, in some form.

Not This Year:

Queue one post for each regular feature.

  • I need a better plan for queuing. Or a plan, period… =/

2014 Writing:

Completed:

Complete rough drafts of To Be or Not to Be and The Stars Are Fire.

  • Both completed this year.

Explore my gestating Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction novel concept, as well as the Last House story collection concept, in the form of short pieces or flash fiction, during April and May.

Draft two more novels in the Trueborn double series, as NaNo projects.

  • Shifted goal to one; at over 270K words, the Monsterscript is complete!

Underway:

Complete rough draft of Perchance to Dream.

  • Currently writing scene 56/60; may still be wrapped up by year’s end.

Not This Year:

Freewrite on the ideas I’ve had for the unwritten portions of the story.

  • A little progress; I want more.

2014 Editing:

Underway:

Complete first revision pass for Chameleon’s Dish.

  • My first serious revision using a plan. It’s taking a lot longer than I anticipated, but the results are an order of magnitude or two above the rough draft, so I’m very happy with that!

Complete Deep Revision process with my three short story WIPs.

  • Again, this took longer than expected. I completed 1/3, “A Splash of Red”.

  • ASOR” was submitted to, accepted, and published in World Unknown Review!

Not This Year:

Complete first revision passes for Bounded by a Nutshell; make pre-revision notes for Blood and Breath.

  • These are waiting until CD is complete.

Revise all poems for Queen of My Infinite Spaces, until satisfied with the results.

  • Nope. And now I’ve added a second set of OctPoWriMo poems….

2014 Hometending:

Underway:

Continue physical and virtual hometending plans – resetting rooms, cleaning files, and inhabiting my study.

  • Not as much forward momentum as I’d hoped, for various reasons to be analyzed before Round 1.

Continue the family room reset.

  • Creeping along in chaotic fits and starts, but getting there.

Spend time daily in my study.

  • Again, this went in fits and starts; with periods of use and non-use.

Develop new habits that support organization and productivity.

  • This was also more hit or miss than I wanted it to be.

Experiment with play project schedule.

  • I did this for a while; then moved on to other means of organzing and arranging my time.

Not This Year:

Research small business establishment /administration.

Read at the Small Business Administration website.

  • Not really ready for this, so set it aside.

2014 Lifetending:

Completed:

Make plans to meet with at least 1 person on my get-together list; get in touch with at least 2 more to express my wish to reconnect.

  • Got together with several friends; contacted even more, and made some new ones!

Seek out playful new ways to move and challenge my body.

  • Yes!

Underway:

Stretch and find new ways to blend the facets of my life with intention and awareness.

Select and complete projects from my Play Jar.

  • I did not as many as I wanted; but some.

So, there’s my 2014. I’ve finished a few things, moved many forward, and left a few largely untouched. I’ve lived, and learned, and grown….

Now it’s your turn! What was your most stunning success of 2014? What do you wish you’d done more of? You know what to do with that little box down there, right? =)

A Nestful of Gifts: December 24, 2014

Come join us for Round 1, 2015 – begins January 5!

Can you believe that the round is over? That the year is only a week from the same?

It’s been an eventful week, in an eventful year. I’ll be looking back on my progress toward my original 2014 goals on Sunday, and hitting the high points..

But this one bit, I’m busting out to share right now!

My short story, “A Splash of Red”, has been published in the first annual World Unknown Review and is now available on Amazon, as a print literary journal and a Kindle ebook!

Revising and submitting this story was one of my Round goals – and being able to read it in a literary journal, collected with other fascinating stories, reminds me of why I set goals and devote a considerable amount of my time to attaining them…because a chance not taken is unlikely to bring my closer to my dreams…

It’s a valuable gift, this reminder…. I seldom accomplish everything I wanted to, in a day, a week, a month, or a year…but the truest rewards are in the striving, the focus, the commitment, and giving myself permission to make my own aspirations as important as my family’s.

May we all have that, this holiday season, and always….

Fresh stories just in time for that long winter’s nap!

My Penultimate Nest: December 21, 2014

A new Round begins January 5! Click to join in!

So, what’s happening in your life, this penultimate Sunday of 2014?

For me, there’s the sound of a snapping fire in the woodstove, the washer chugging along as though it’s talking to itself, and the random sounds of laughter from the boy’s room (I think he’s watching American Dad!), and running narrative from the girl’s (where she’s building a Girl Nest on her loft bed). The occasional jingle of the Corki-dog’s tags…and the tapping of my fingers on my laptop keys.

Oh, and I’ve finished the penultimate scene in The Earth Doth Move...I’m hoping to have a complete draft before our local NNWM Write-In later tonight…

Snuggling into My Nest: December 17, 2014

Wanna ROW with us? Another round starts in January!

Can you believe Hanukkah has begun, and Christmas Eve is only a week away? That we’re down to the final two weeks of 2014?

Do you have big plans, for these two weeks?

I’m wrapping up. Not gifts, so much – we have a rather non-traditional approach to gift-giving, here, and the kids have pressed ‘purchase’ on their Amazon wish lists, so, other than stocking stuffers, that’s done.

Instead, I’m wrapping up my 2014 writing; and looking forward to 2015.

It’s been a banner year…I’ll have more on that for Round 1, 2015; but, for now, I’m recovering from our weekend trip, making steps to get our home back into a state approximating chaotic order. I’m making progress, and getting closer to the end of my NaNo novel…and wrapping up other projects.

And I’m giving myself some time and space to relax, and dream, and allow that to help me shift to a new year, and new goals.

And, on that note…

Thanks to George Takei’s Facebok page! ❤

Movable and Inspiring Nest: December 14, 2014

Wanna ROW with us?

Hey there! How are ya?

The kids and I have been visiting our dear friends, the Woodman family, since late Thursday. We live in upstate New York, and they live in central New Jersey…but Skype and text chats can only go so far, so, a few times a year, we load up the Outback and make the five-hour drive to our “second home”.

No one gets much sleep, but a tremendous amount of fun is had…the pictures will say it better than I can!

Writing is not as prolific for me, here – too many wonderful other things to do, and, after all, it’s not why we came, even if Sylvia is my personal patron of the arts and loves to have my typing away at her kitchen table, on the guest bed, or in her living room…so, while there is writing, the focus narrowed to blogging, the kids’ reports (nearly done, and due tomorrow), and my NaNo WIP, which is getting close to the resolution scenes, and still surprising me…

But the inspiration? That will ride home in the car with us, later today, and be with me for some time to come…be on the lookout for many, many words in the next week or two!

Here’s looking at you and yours, Sylvia Woodman! You guys make me a better me! =D

Do you have personal friends who inspire you to go more deeply into your passions? Have you let them know what that means to you?

Sprucing and Pruning My Nest: December 10, 2014

Wanna ROW with us?

So, how are you doing, this late winter? Here in the frozen north, we’re wrapping up a two-day storm. I’ve taken advantage of a disparity in mine and the kids’ sleep/wake cycles to get in some words, move the reports forward, and evaluate my goals buffet, pruning some branches I’m not going to get to this round.

A Nestful of Sleepy Excitement: December 8, 2014

Wanna ROW with us!

Did you miss me? I know, I know – I’m already a day late – I was writing!

It’s been quite a week, for me story-wise…it’s also been a largely nocturnal one, with a big storm, and some big news…

But I’ll say more about that on Wednesday – right now, I’m in a hurry to get back to my story….so I hope you’ll forgive my evasive tactic from my waitressing days – “Smile more; talk less.”

December Focuses:

  • First Quarter Homeschool Reports for both children.

  • Finish my two “hanging” WIPs.

  • Set plans for 2015 Writing.

Ahhh, the nocturnal life…

Target Attained:

Continue exploring nutrition goals.

Maintain existing nutrition goals.

  • Water; vegetables/fruits (veggie wrap; broccoli; celery; carrots; cucumbers; grape tomatoes).Grains (whole grain rice and bread); Greek yogurt; salads/smoothies (4 salads; 2 smoothies). Fish or seafood (salmon; crab, shrimp).

ROW80 Sponsor duties:

  • Visit my “team” twice weekly.

  • Visit other ROWers as time and energy permit.

Will we get THIS kind of snow?

In Progress:

2014 Blogging:

Build positive blogging habits – post regularly, build queues, answer comments, and share diversely.

Maintain blogging schedule.

  • Still very wrapped up in my story world, and running a bit behind with blogging…I’m playing this by ear, due to the story being alive and homeschool reports to write. Maybe in the next week…

Catch up comments and visits neglected during NaNoWriMo.

  • Slow progress, here, but progress is progress.

2014 Writing:

Complete rough draft of The Earth Doth Move: at least 2,000 words a day until complete.

  • Wednesday: 4001 words.

  • Thursday: 7000 words + (forgot to chart).

  • Friday: 11,533 words!!! (all-time personal best!)

  • Saturday: 8,003 words.

Begin the massive kitchen reset.

  • We have a kitchen counter! Who knew?!

  • Organizing and sweeping.

Take time at least once a week to simply be in my study, as it is.

  • Sat in there with my pretty lights on…planning and dreaming.

Clean up files.

File or delete Inbox email backlog; maintain at a manageable level.

  • Levels still fluctuating, depending on other projects. Under 100, on average. Debris cleared.

Develop new habits that support organization and productivity.

Continue using calendar app to manage my time.

  • Added a trip to New Jersey.

Complete and submit both childrens’ first quarter homeschooling reports.

  • Annalise’s report complete up to Geography; about 75% complete.

2014 Fitness:

Seek out playful new ways to move and challenge my body.

Plan/execute at least two activities/trips each month that promote physical activity.

  • Our plans to attend the Saratoga Springs Victorian Street Walk didn’t happen…people were up all night Wednesday, and asleep most of Thursday. Other plans being considered…and, with a big storm predicted for Tuesday, they may involve snow.
