ROW80 2013 – Hindsight; Foresight

Curious? Click the icon!

As promised, here I am with a look back at my 2013 ROW80 writing objectives, and a bit of what I’m cooking up for 2014.

I’ll look at each of my five categories, in turn…

2013 Blogging:

  • I did well with posting relevant content and developing new ideas. I evolved themes for each of my three main blogs, and incorporated at least one regular feature into each. I offered more high-concept content, gave more glimpses into my life, shared more widely and bravely, made new friends, and had a lot of fun!

  • While I did create new headers, begin using Flickr and editing my photos more adventurously, I didn’t spend nearly as much time and energy on layout and design as I had intended to. Things still awaiting my attention are sidebars, mission statements, about pages, editing and updating, and other housekeeping matters. Additionally, I haven’t yet moved The Unfettered Life from Blogger to a new home at WordPress, or investigated what would be involved in setting up a website.

2014 Blogging:

  • Winter is a good season for nesting. I like to spruce up our home, and my virtual homes, too. So it seems like a perfect time to focus some attention on the layout and design aspects of my long-neglected Blogging Action Plan.

  • I’ll also be building a better overall blogging habit – posting regularly, building queues, answering comments more steadily, sharing more widely.

  • I will be brainstorming what I want in a website, and begin the process of moving The Unfettered Life to a spiffy new home.

Chameleon’s Dish, manuscript hard copy.

2013 Writing:

  • I had a banner writing year. I created flash fiction, essays, and novels. I completed two Trueborn WIPs, and nearly a third. I began three more WIPs in the series, and have a better idea of what the series will be, and what stories still await writing.

  • Reading Cathy Yardley‘s Rock Your Plot shifted the way I approach novel plotting from pantsing to an open-ended form of plotting – more like devising containers to hold scenes, a skeleton upon which life will be built. I used a few elements of the process in my two July Camp NaNoWriMo projects, The Stars Are Fire and Perchance to Dream. I liked the results well enough that I employed and tweaked the entire process for my November NaNoWriMo project, King of Shreds and Patches. Largely due to the prior planning, I was able to complete a 122,000+ word rough draft WIP in 30 days – and it’s easily the best first draft I’ve ever written.

  • Although I had hoped to complete To Be or Not to Be well before the end of the year, and missed by several scenes, I am very pleased with the progress I made, overall. Beneath it is a solid foundation of new learning and better habits that will certainly increase my writing productivity.

2014 Writing:

  • I will be focusing on completing the rough drafts of TBONTB, TSAF, and PTD.

  • There are at least four more novels to be drafted in the Trueborn double series. I will complete at least 2 of these in the coming year, as NaNo pojects.

  • I will be exploring my gestating Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction novel concept, as well as the Last House story collection concept, in the form of short pieces or flash fiction, during April and May.

Pre-editing notebook for Chameleon’s Dish.

2013 Editing:

  • Editing took a backseat through a lot of this year, but I did make some notable advances. I read Cathy Yardley‘s Rock Your Revisions, and am applying the early steps of the process to Bounded by a Nutshell. I have already completed my initial pre-editing notes for its companion novel, Chameleon’s Dish. I feel that both WIPs will benefit greatly from the process, especially since both were pantsed NaNo novels, and very rough, but have good storylines and a lot of potential.

  • I also employed the first several steps of Sarah Selecky‘s Deep Revision blog series, using three of my existing short stories: “A Splash of Red”, “Morning Coffee”, and “Peach Liqueur Love”. These were set aside for noveling projects, but I felt I was finding depth in all three stories, and ideas to carry forth to others.

  • I made very little project on my poetry WIP, Queen of My Infinite Spaces. I had intended to completely revise this as an experiment in self-publishing.

2014 Editing:

  • I will plan and complete the first revision passes for Chameleon’s Dish and Bounded by a Nutshell, and make pre-revision notes for Blood and Breath.

  • I will revise all poems for QOMIS, until satisfied with the results.

  • I will complete the Deep Revision process with the three short stories in progress.

Family room desk, in situ.

2013 Hometending:

  • As far as basic home and writing matters, I did well. I established some good habits, and have a strong sense of where I want to go with each, long-term.

  • I avoided certain aspects of my plans, though, especially investigating small business learning, website creation, and wholly occupying my new study.

2014 Hometending:

  • I’ll continue with my physical and virtual hometending plans – resetting rooms, cleaning files, and inhabiting my study.

  • I’ll develop new habits that make organization and productively.

  • I will begin researching small business establishment and administration.

Takin’ care of business with a couple of goofy kids!

2013 Lifetending:

  • This was another area in which I made huge shifts. I stretched in many ways; serving as a sponsor, getting involved in various online groups and WANATribe, and living a more connected and conscious life in general.

  • Exercise and movement were more sporadic than I would like.

2014 Lifetending:

  • I will continue to stretch and find new ways to blend the aspects of my life with intention and awareness.

  • I will seek out playful new ways to move and challenge my body.

Until we meet again, for 2014 Round 1…may life treat you sweetly!

Weaving in the Edges: Final ROW80 Update: 12/26/13

Curious? Click the icon!

Here we are, at the end of another round. It’s time to evaluate what I’ve woven, these last 80 days, and make some general plans for the next.

I will post a more retrospective/forward-thinking post on Sunday. For today, though, it’s just the basic checklist and a summary evaluation.

During the break, I will be assessing my progress, preparing for 2014 in a more detailed way, and playing with some projects and ideas as I feel the desire to do so.

And for now, I wish you all a restful and lovely remainder of 2013. See you Sunday!

Round 4 Wrapup Buffet Summary:

Blogging:

Focus point:

  • Offering a sustainable schedule of features.

Maintain four non-ROW80 posts weekly. More often than not.

  • Likely keeping as-is.

  • Will work on preparing queued, rerun, and reblog options for busy writing times.

  • Announce anticipated absences from regular schedule.

Keep up with comments; or post an explanation. I tend to lose track when I am especially creation-focused. Attained maybe half of the time.

  • I did well enough during normal times, but lost track of this during holidays, travel, and creative intensity.

  • Will be working on a polite way to announce when comment answering may lapse.

Write/Revise Mission Statements for all blogs. No progress.

  • I gave this a little thought, but nothing else.

  • I’ll be carrying this on to the next round.

  • I feel the thoughts crystallizing.

Strive for high-concept posts for shanjeniah Regular Features. On target, mostly.

  • I’m gaining more of a feel for what this means to me.

  • I will continue to develop this as a craft practice, across all blogs.

  • Small business research. No progress this round.

Minimum of 5 minutes, twice weekly, organizing and cleaning the space. Sporadic.

  • I’ve still had some resistance to this. Considering; moving forward through next round.

Minimum of 10 minutes, twice weekly, being in the space. Not really; only once or twice.

  • The space is not particularly welcoming, as yet; it’s more a cat playground. Will be working on that!

  • This happened often enough to become something approaching habit. Yay, me! =)

Clean main Documents folder. Mostly.

Weaving Joy and Sorrow: ROW80 Update, 12/22/13

Curious? Click the icon!

It’s been an eventful week since I last posted here. I’m recovering from a cold that came with muzzy head, body aches, and fatigue the insistent dry cough didn’t relieve. We’ve been in a festive mood, punctuated by the Thursday evening death of Blaster, one of our two elderly guinea pigs, and his Saturday morning burial service.

I’m in a place of renewal and refilling. More television, time with loved ones, reading and saving things TBR, random bits and pieces of living tended to, and more blogging. No new WIP writing – though snippets and ideas are simmering in a rich stew …

My Wednesday post may be brief or nonexistent, so I bid you all a lovely few days, whatever you are celebrating this week – even if it happens to be dryer lint!

Buffet Selections:

Blogging:

Focus point:

  • Offering a sustainable schedule of features.

Maintain four non-ROW80 posts weekly. Almost.

Keep up with comments; or post an explanation. Not even close.

  • I’ve read all the lovely comments, but have utterly failed at answering them, or explaining.

  • This is a high priority for the coming week!

Strive for high-concept posts for shanjeniah Regular Features. Target attained!

  • Yes, for Friday and Saturday posts.

Hometending:

Focus point:

  • Tidying and beautifying my physical, virtual, and interior spaces.

Continue refitting common rooms to better suit our needs. On target.

  • Helped Annalise prepare for her Christmas decorating.

Move nature books and field guides to new space. On target.

  • Unearthed and moved a backyard birding magazine.

Complete family room shift, with new desk as anchor. On target.

  • My large plastic tub is about half-empited, and the remaining items on the computer desk are roughly sorted.

  • I’ve finally got the base arrangement of the rest of the room set. Tidying, cleaning and organizing ongoing.

Minimum of 5 minutes, twice weekly, organizing and cleaning the space. Target exceeded!

  • I spent 5 minutes each on Monday and Thursday, and about 10 on Saturday. Things are definitely looking better, and I am getting new ideas on how to best utilize this small and tucked away space.

Decorate bulletin board, take down US map (moving to family or living room). On target.

  • Removed world map and kids’ old game scoring sheet from the bulletin board.

  • Decided where to put the US map, but I need to get considerably further with the family room refit, first, so that is on hold for now.

  • Next up, pull the rest of the staples from the board and decorate.

Lifetending:

Focus points:

  • Relationships.

  • Exercise and Movement.

  • Passions.

Make time and sweetness for Jim and the children, in ways that are important to them. Target attained!

  • Major attention paid here during this pre-Christmasing week.

  • Helped Jim with a couple of computer projects he wanted to wrap up, and we had time for talking and flirting. His car is still down, so I loaned him mine all week.

  • Took the kids out to get the rest of their Christmas treasures. Helped Lise procure and set up her tabletop tree.

  • Removed the deceased guinea pig from the cage; tenderly and respectfully, for s/he was a good piggie. Was attentive to the feelings of the children, and have been, since. It’s a rough time of year to lose a pet.

Immerse myself in writing, living, and being with my family, striving for presence. Target attained!

  • No new writing other than blogposts. Still gathering input, percolating, and being with my family. I have been feeling introspective and present, of late.

  • I suspect an avalanche of words to pour forth from me, post-Christmas. I feel it growing and loosening. This is the fertile time, and I’m not messing with it!

Regularly evaluate; adjust as needed. Target attained!

  • Natural evaluation still simmering, while I begin to implement a few small changes and consider slightly larger ones.

Practice movement daily, for at least a few minutes. Target attained!

  • Yes, mostly hometending.

Add a little more intention to this, and remember to move even when in long nighttime writing sessions, at least occasionally. On target.

  • After a lull during NaNo, getting a bit better at this, at least sporadically.

Allow time and space to indulge my passions. Target attained!

  • Yup! I spent some time editing photos, blogging, being with my beloveds, and, of course, watching Enterprise – it’s writing research, after all!

Read, comment, and share others’ posts and links.Target attained!

  • This week, I read, commented on, and shared All. The. WIPpets! On Facebook and Twitter, too, where I gave each a cute little hashtag. Yay, me!

Tend sponsor duties promptly. Target attained!

Connect!Target attained!

  • Many comments on many blogs!

  • Some chatting and opening up on Facebook – with hashtags, even!

WIsh the other ROWers some holiday cheer!

May we all have peace and light!

Holiday Weaving: ROW80 Update, December 12/16/13

Curious? Click the icon!

I’ve had a busy few days, in a family sense. Not as much focus on writing, this session, as on doing and being with my beloveds. The children and I attended an outdoor Christmas party and light display, even though the weather was well below freezing, and we went out to Starbucks and to buy cocoa in advance of Winter Storm Electra, which brought us several inches of snow that has provided hours of sledding fun, already.

I’ve been hometending, and daydreaming – T’Pol and Trip are definitely insisting on their own fan fiction, and the plot tribbles are multiplying nicely.

For the rest of this round, I’ll likely be puttering with this and that:

  • With the children’s homeshooling reports turned in to the local school district, I will be focusing on a couple of beta-reading projects, and a resume I’ve offered to write for a family member.

  • I’ll be looking back at my 2013 goals, and beginning to set my intentions for 2014.

  • I’ll be continuing with writing, editing, and blogging, with the intent to begin rebuilding my queue for each feature.

  • I’ll be drafting my sponsor post for Round 1, 2014.

  • I’ll be continuing to enjoy this festive season with family and friends.

How about you? If you are a ROWer, what does the end of Round 4 look like? If this is a holiday season for you, what have you done to celebrate? Are you finding ways to delight yourself and others?

Weaving Otherwise: ROW80 Update 12/12/13

Curious? Click the icon!

Hi there! It’s been a week since I updated here. The kids and I went to New Jersey to visit dear friends last weekend, and, on Sunday, I drove for five hours, then unloaded nearly the entire car, sorting and homing as I went.

I could have filed an update, but it would have basically said that I wrote some editing notes, and little else. I was doing other things, without regret.

Things like talking with my dear sisterfriend Sylvia and her family. Like lighting my new menorah, even though I’m not Jewish, and ate latkes like I was born to it (Sylvia is an amazing cook!). Like taking each child to the most awesome thrift store I’ve ever seen, and acquiring treasures and staples for us all (the lovely new-to-us teakettle has already whistled several times!). Like taking Annalise to her best friend’s homeschool ice skating day. Like spending more time on social media…and just sipping coffee and letting life happen around me…and listening to the laughter and play of children I love, who are growing up, and changing.

And I bought two new episodes of Enterprise“Impulse” and “Similitude”. They join “Breaking the Ice” in my private Kindle collection!

And, after bringing forth an entire draft of King of Shreds and Patches during NaNo, it was almost a relief that I wrote only a single scene this week.

Weaving and Puttering : ROW80 Update 12/4/13

Curious? Click the icon!

It’s a preparing time for me – preparing for the holidays to come, and preparing for a busy weekend that begins tomorrow, and ends Sunday.

Post NaNo – I’m puttering with this and that.  It feels good to give King of Shreds and Patches a well-deserved rest, and to delve back into writing the final few scenes of To Be or Not  to Be and the pre-editing notes for the “Monsterscript,” Bounded by a Nutshell.  It feels great to be blogging regularly again, and to follow a cow trail or two from one delicious blog to another, visiting old friends and finding new favorites.

Closing out NaNo by attending the local Thank God It’s Over party gave me a threshold to cross, and I feel more at peace than I’ve felt in previous years.  A much more satisfying ending to the WIP probably didn’t hurt, either! =)

Sunday’s update may be brief, or absent, but I’ll be back by Wednesday, and there will be posts between to keep you company, while I’m busy with other things.

May you find much delightment, until we meet here again!

  • The kids and I attended my local NaNoWriMoTGIO (Thank God It’s Over!) party at a local coffeeshop. Miah and Lise were made very welcome. So many writers, so much NaNo bingo, laughter, and delectable victuals…hard to believe that I waited four years to attend an event! I’ve done two this month, and will definitely attend more next year! =D

Weaving 444 Threads and 122, 488 Words: ROW80 Update, 12/1/13

Curious? Click the icon!

Here we are, all the way round the year to December, again. Are you where you thought you’d be at the beginning? Somewhere unexpected? Somewhere between here and there, poised for….?

I’ll be spending some time, this month, looking back, and forward…and I won’t be forgetting Now – the only instant we ever own, the only one we can ever directly act upon. I’ll be weaving past, present, and future, like Scrooge’s ghosts, divining what meaning and learning and delight I can find there….

(Yes, I am a member of the Muppet Generation, and this delights me!)

This Now is an exhilarating one:

  • This post marks the 444th post on this blog.

  • I’ve attained my goal of completing an entire WIP rough draft during NaNo!

  • We’ll be popping by the local NNWM TGIO (Thank God It’s Over) party!

  • We’re warm and cozy, haveplans to see friends, and holiday cheering in the works.

  • My house is quiet, peaceful, and filled with my favorite people and things.

  • I’m thrumming with ideas, insights, and a wide-open sense of possibility!

And…it’s a book! From my mind!

In the coming days, I’ll be reviewing my NaNo experience, exploring holiday traditions, how we live, where I am, have been, and will be, and current events I’ve been thinking about. I’ll be picking up some loose threads, and seeing what I can create for the rest of 2013. I’ll begin making intentions and action plans for 2014. I will be with those I love, in various ways…I may even get brave, and offer an olive branch and mended fence or two. Without you, the people who come to read and to share, there wouldn’t be 444 posts on this blog. I hope, whatever December means to you, that you’ll drop by for a hot beverage (unless it happens to be hot where you are!) and a tasty blog treat – something that delights, inspires, amuses, gets you to thinking, noticing, dreaming…. I strive to be worth your time. Your precious, one Now, whichever one you read this in.
