Surprises for #SoCS (A day late)

Standard disclaimer:

I don’t own them; I don’t profit from them. They just tell me to write, and I do as ordered. They both outrank me, after all!

Surprises

“Which is it, T’Pol?”  Trip put his hands on his hips and got too close; that always seemed to trigger her a little, but, just like these dust-ups they seemed to keep on having, herkind of got the feeling that she liked it as much as he did.

She straightened her spine – how the hell did she manage to make it straighter than it already was? What the hell kind of witch was she, and what was going to happen if Starfleet Command ever saw her doing that? Probably have every human in Starfleet breaking their backs trying to do the same thing.

“Commander Tucker.”

“Yeah?” He sent the shiver of arousal at the way she said his name right back to her; her eyes were zeroed in on him, just him, and he wanted to keep them that way. Woman had the sexiest damn eyes – not quite as dark as they looked in a jazz club on a Tuesday night, and he thought he could get lost in the little flecks of green and gold –

“You are obstructing my path, and preventing me from determining the answer to your query.”

Damn. Her chin was up, and she enunciated each word. He could tell she was getting “agitated,” as she put it. If he pushed her any further now, he was going to push her away, and he didn’t want that.

No, he didn’t want that at all.

What he wanted was to get a hell of a lot closer to his Vulcan Surprise Package, now that they were both officially assigned to the same ship.  And that meant unwrapping a few surprises of his own.

He faux-glared at her for another second and a half, then shrugged. “Well, since I’m apparently just getting in your way, Sub-commander, the station is all yours. Never mind that this is Engineering, and I’m the Chief Engineer, since I’m sure you were playing with more complicated toys than this before you cut your first tooth –“

“I have never injured my teeth, Commander Tucker. And you are still blocking my access to the diagnostic display.”

“Well, then – I guess I’ll just go get a sandwich, since I’m not needed here.” He spun around and walked off, but turned to face her way when he went down the ladder. She was still standing in the same place, but she’d turned her head to watch him go, and it was a little tipped in that adorable way that said that just maybe he’d surprised her.

Trip started to whistle, imagining how much more surprised she was going to be when he brought her back a cup of chamomile tea.

This Star Trek: Enterprise TnT fan fiction is brought to you courtesy of Linda G. Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday, where this week’s prompt was “Which/witch/wich;” beginning with “Which”, and using all three versions, but NOT the old “Which witch is which.” As always, no editing (beyond typos).

Foundations Building Slowly: #ROW80 and #12WeekYear Week 4 Final Update

Hey there!

On Wednesday, I asked this question:

What is your favorite book, and why do you love it?

Today, I’m going to give you my answer. I have many favorites, but two I come back to again and again. One is fiction, the other a memoir of sorts:

Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein. This is the book that gave us the word “grok” – and opened my eyes to new philosophies and perspectives. It was recommended to me by a sometimes lover in my early twenties, and it was the best thing by far to come from that connection.

Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. While her husband and her firstborn child are more famous, Anne Morrow Lindbergh was a gifted writer and poet in her own right. This book was written during a mostly solitary island retreat, and the stages of a woman’s life are symbolized by different varieties of seashells. Each time I read it, I’m in a slightly different phase of my own life, and understand on a different level.

Now, on to the main event. This wasn’t my best week ever; I think being in a low point in my biorhythm had an effect, as well as the inclusion of the homeschool reports. Still, I did get some things finished, and most things moved forward, so there’s that. =D

One Short Syllable for #WeWriWa #8Sunday

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors’ Eight Sentence Sunday – the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write! We’ve got a variety of genres and talented writers just waiting for you to come sample our wordy wares.  Come read one, or all!

If you’re inclined to share your own 8-10 sentence snippet, follow the link and sign up. It’s a great community to be a part of! =D

“Monday Morning Coffee”  has been with me since I was sixteen. A local boy with schizophrenia wandered away from his family at a large outdoor event. Several days later, he was found, deceased.

From that story came this one – the connection might not be clear to anyone but me – but it’s there.

Context:

Rose is at work on a Monday morning, feeling inspiration in the form of a newspaper rose.

 One Short Syllable

I’ll put Jeremy’s rose right by my lamp, to inspire me…

Above, in the livelier parts of the library, students and faculty mingle with the other librarians – the ones I’ve never paid much attention to.

Up above, right now, is life, and possibility.  That’s something I can tell Jeremy when I see him on Friday, before I ask all the questions already boiling over in my mind. The flower, and the story of how it came to me, are things I can talk about, with the others…

I pick up Jeremy’s paper rose, and head upstairs, humming “Red Rubber Ball”.  I see one of my colleagues wiping down tables – Fred? Brad? Matt?  I only know that it’s one short syllable.

What does Rose intend to do now?

Will she remember her colleague’s name?

Where will the rose lead Rose?

Any guesses?

“Monday Morning Coffee” was originally published in the 2015 edition of World Unknown Review.  Since I retain all rights beyond first publication, I intend to revise the story and use it as my initial self-published offering.

As I type this on Thursday evening, NaNoWriMo is figuratively breathing down my neck, looking over my shoulder, and I’m still in the planning/early plotting stages of my WIP-to-be.

I’m not overly concerned, though. Each step in my hybridized process yields new insights and inspirations, and gets me a little more into the story world, so that my mind is priming itself for the journey ahead. I’m a discovery writer, anyway. Even when I have a well-developed plot, at some point the characters will just decide to go their own ways, and – poof! Before I know it, everything is different, and almost always for the better.

I’ll keep on going until November 1 – and then we’ll see.

Until then, may you and yours find joy!

New Foundations: #ROW80 and #12WeekYear Week 4 Midweek

Hey there!

I’m a bit late getting this update posted. Between the extra post to make my first quarterly adjustment to my 12 Week Year goals, and taking my 13 year old daughter shopping for cold-weather clothing and out to a long-belated birthday lunch (her birthday is in early July)…well, I ran out of day before I ran out of things to post!

Looking at this update feels a bit odd to me. I’ve been very busy the last few days, but the percentages of completion don’t really reflect it. I have a feeling the balance will tip somewhere around Thursday or Friday.

Some weeks are like that.

Like I said, though, I have been busy.  One of my projects was getting back to my Pixels to Platform course. I’m moving forward slowly and beginning to research my audience.

Since you’re reading this, you are a potential part of my research group…and so, I’m going to ask you a question that will help me with my learning process. No worries if you’re not inclined to answer – this isn’t a test! But if you’d like to, please feel free. And if you’d like to go one step further, and answer another question or two, just let me know – I’ve got a pretty comprehensive list to work with!

So, first the question, and then my Week 4 Midweek Progress Report.

Wholly Illogical for WIPpet Wednesday

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

It’s time again WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

I’m running into the last possible hour to post this and still have it be Wednesday where I live.  I’ve got a good reason…I went shopping with Lise, who needed cooler-weather clothing. We had lunch a at local coffee shop Professor Java’s, where she loves the BLTs and fizzy pink lemonade.

We had a great time, and she found things she can be excited to wear through the coming months.

But now, on to the WIPpeting!

It’s time for another installment of my TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

I’ve decided to use this story, once revision gets to a point I’m comfortable with, as my initiation into Wattpad. So please don’t hesitate to let me know if something’s not working for you – it will make a better story in the long run!

Recap

Trip just got his comeuppance from Hoshi about the way he treated the new Vulcan Science Officer. Now, we switch back to T’Pol’s POV to see what happens next.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is October 25, 2017.
  • I have 3 sentences for you today. Why three? I subtracted the first digit of the day from the second: 5-2=3.

Wholly Illogical

T’Pol listened to the conversation between Commander Tucker and the Communications Officer – Ensign Hoshi Sato, according to the documentation Starfleet had provided to Ambassador Soval. She was uncertain she understood the human subtext, but the young woman was apparently attempting to protect her from poor treatment – a misguided emotional response, perhaps, as how the Chief Engineer and the Captain chose to interact with her was of no importance as regarded her orders from the Vulcan High Command.

Then Commander Tucker – Trip – appeared beside her station, and his scent precipitated a response within her that was wholly illogical.

Will T’Pol reveal her reaction to Trip’s scent?

What does Commander Tucker intend?

What are T’Pol’s orders from the Vulcan High Command?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

Reshaped Foundations: 12 Week Year EOQ1/ROW80 Round 4

The 12-Week Year is still new for me, so I’ve decided to review my goals at the end of each quarter (every three weeks) to make sure they’re still working for me. Here’s my first review, with some adapted goals based upon what I’ve learned during the inaugural three weeks.

Note: This isn’t my Week Four Midweek Update; that will follow a bit later in the day.

Relationships, Family, and Home:

Complete beta readings for Spellfire’s Kiss and Stained Blood (giving back and paying forward).

  • No changes to the overall goal here, but my action plan is shifting. More on that in my midweek update.

I’ll celebrate the completion of each of these books by giving myself an evening of leisure to cap off the effort expended.

Declutter/clean/ organize porch; my side of bedroom; and my study, making these spaces useful and tidy.

  • No changes needed here.

I’ll celebrate the completion of each area by spending some time in it – reading, journaling, having a cup of coffee, listening to music – just some time to quietly and privately enjoy what I’ve accomplished.

Complete required homeschool obligations, including facilitating Jeremiah’s driving practice.

  • No changes to the goal, but moving the reporting action plan forward; I forgot I adjusted the due date by two weeks.

I’ll celebrate the completion/submission of the reports with an evening of relaxation once the reports have been emailed (prior to November 15, 2017). I’ll celebrate assisting Miah by continuing to enjoy our time together, and sprinkling adventures along the way.

Professional/Financial:

Complete the DIY-MFA Pixels to Platform Course and Montoya Digital Marketing’s Slaying SEO class, and devote 3 hours weekly to Holly Lisle’s How to Revise Your Novel course.

  • With  Slaying SEO now active, I’ve adjusted the action plan for this goal to accommodate it.

I’ll celebrate the completion of each course with an hour or two of reflection/brianstorming/dreaming accompanied by a beverage of my choice. I’ll celebrate completing each week’s revision time with an Enterprise episode or fanfiction hour.

New Writing:

Plan, plot, and draft one fantasy novel (Trueborn: Solemates), and write a poem a day for OctPoWriMo.

  • No changes here, either.

I’ll celebrate the completion of each stage of the novel creation by reading one work of fiction from my Kindle library, and purchasing another (because books!). I’ll celebrate the completion of my OctPoWriMo challenge by compiling the poems and associated drawings into a rough chapbook.

Chef Bluebeard:

Attain average sales of $200/week.

  • Reduced this goal.

Complete and launch website.

  • No changes here.

Contact 10 business establishments regarding POS placement.

  • Changed goal to be more specific.

Continue scheduling/ selling at local events.

  • No changes.

I’ll celebrate the attainment of this income level with Jim, and with the kids, in a way that will be relevant for us all…since I won’t be the only one involved in this, I don’t want to be the only one determining the nature of that celebration. I”ll celebrate the site launch by sharing it widely, staring at it plenty, and tweaking it as I learn and grow!

Health, Fitness, and Spirituality:

Samsung Health:

Complete the 5K Training Samsung Health, and begin again, to build strength and competency.

  • Changing this a bit. Rather than move right to the 10K, I’m going to repeat the 5K, to gain strength.

I’ll celebrate the end of the 5K Training with the purchase of 2 pound hand weights; and the end of the 12 Week Year training by investigating 5K races for 2018.

Attend tai chi class six times monthly, health and weather permitting, and explore yoga and reiki at ReVibe.

  • Changing goal to six tai chi classes a month, and timing for yoga in action plan.

I’ll celebrate this goal – by doing it! The doing will be its own reward, each time.

Eat three vegetable-based meals or snacks weekly by end of year.

  • Although I’d love to think I’m going to cook every week – well, I’m not that likely to do it. So I’m shifting the goal to simply eating veggie-based meals and snacks.

I’ll celebrate attaining this goal by going out to enjoy a vegetarian meal.

Personal Expression:

Purchase three new bras from three sources, and evaluate.

  • No changes needed.

I’ll celebrate attaining this goal by retiring my existing bras – and by getting one more of whichever is my favorite of the new three.

Assess my jewelry and other accessories, and purchase new pieces under $20 as they speak to me.

  • Changing action plan – taking an extra 2 weeks to go through jewelry.

I’ll celebrate the attainment of this goal by finding and purchasing a more efficient place to store my pretty little treasures when I’m not wearing them.

Evaluate my wardrobe as the season changes, purchasing a second pair of jeans; gloves; and other items as needed.

  • No changes needed here.

I’ll celebrate this one by enjoying my new, well-fitting clothing!

Reshaping My Foundations: #12WeekYear/#ROW80 Week 3 Final Update

Hey there!

It’s time again for my 12 Week Year 1 End of Week 3//ROW80 Round 4 Update. It’s been a productive week, but, one-quarter of the way into my first “year”, I can see that what I suspected at the outset is true – I have too many goals.

Not as many too many as I’ve often had in the past, but my reach is just slightly too far ahead of my grasp. I’m focused, but I seem to be falling a bit short each week, which is a clear sign that I need to dial things back a bit for Year Two.

Of course, that’s still 9 weeks away. So, I’m going to take this week to go through my Year One goals, and lighten them up a little. The point, after all, is to learn to set goals that are a challenge, but are also attainable. If I can’t make the goal with genuine focused effort…the goal needs to shift a bit.

The beauty is that there will be another “year” after this one – and then another, and another, and another. I can grow incrementally, and, even if it’s not as fast as I might prefer, I am doing better than I was when my goals extended over a 52 Week Year rather than a 12 Week Year, which gives me a lot more opportunity to adjust things.

I’ve decided I’m going to do this every quarter-“year.” That way, I won’t start floundering, and lose my momentum because my goals are just a bit too much. And, if I’ve set my bar too low, I can add a bit.

Do you  adjust your goals periodically, or stay the course once you’ve set them?
