“Is That An Order?” for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Wrayburn.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

So this is my month of rest, organizing, and securing loose ends after my four-month Chaostivity Marathon. So far, so good. I’ve gotten all the homeschool paperwork done until December. I’ve gotten back to a more regular (but not perfect) blogging schedule, and even added a few thousand words to my epic fantasy novel, Foul Deeds Will Rise, from the Trueborn series. I’m moving through the exercises in Prosperity for Writers, and doing more around the house and yard.

More progress is coming…but right now, we’re going out to look for the space station, which leads me to my reason for being here today…even though our attempts to find the station failed.

It’s time for another installment of my finally-getting–sassy-TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

I’ve decided to use this story, once revision gets to a point I’m comfortable with, as my initiation into Wattpad. So please don’t hesitate to let me know if something’s not working for you – it will make a better story in the long run!

Recap:

Captain Jonathan Archer doesn’t want a Vulcan in his Ready Room, or his crew. But he’s got one, and Trip’s already hard at work offending her.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is August 9, 2017.
  • I have 10 paragraphs for you today. I added the digits of the year.

“Is That An Order?”

Trip plopped himself back into the chair, and Porthos hopped onto his lap. Both of them looked damned pleased with themselves. And they’d both been way too friendly with their damned Vulcan “chaperone.” Jon couldn’t very well tell Porthos that, and, even if he could make his beagle understand, he was sure to get the saddest puppy-dog eyes in the system. And that left Trip.

“What the hell was that all about?” Jon put all his frustration at being saddled with her into the question.

Dunno what you mean.” Anytime the engineer laid on the Southern accent that thick, he was trying to deflect from something.

“You just tried to shake hands with a Vulcan.”

“You said we were supposed to extend her every courtesy. Just thought extending my hand was part of the deal.” Trip shrugged. “Apparently, she doesn’t agree.”

And then some.” She’d been condescending as hell, yesterday, at Starfleet Medical. Today, she was downright ascerbic, on top of the condescension, and Jon could sense trouble brewing. Trip was playing it off like it was no big deal, but he wasn’t the kind to just let something go, and, the more challenging, the better he seemed to like it. That made him a hell of an engineer…but a liability with the damned Vulcan woman. He was bound to keep trying to get T’Pol to shake his hand, call him Trip – or maybe both.

Unless he put an end to it right now. “Trip, Vulcans don’t shake hands. I thought you knew that.”

“Why would I? I’ve never asked one to do it before.” Jon’s best friend bent his head to add, apparently to Porthos, whose ears he was scratching, “Sorry, little buddy. I don’t think she pats beagles on the head, either. So I guess we’re both out of luck on this one, unless we can figure out a way to get her to change her mind.” Porthos gave a little yip that suggested he agreed. Maybe Jon was going to have to keep him in his quarters for a while, until he could teach him not to jump on her. He’d never done that to anyone else, even as a puppy.

Well, don’t ask her again.” He caught the other man’s dimpled grin, and sighed. “I mean it, Trip. She made it clear. She’s not going to shake your hand, use your nickname, or be your friend – if Vulcans even have friends, which I seriously doubt. Let’s just try to get through the next eight days without creating an interstellar incident. You want to challenge yourself, you’ve got plenty to do in the Engine Room, or you could ask Hoshi to try to teach you Klingon. But don’t ask Sub-Commander T’Pol for any more handshakes. We don’t need to antagonize her.”

“Is that an order, sir?”

“You bet your ass it is.”

Will Trip obey Jon’s order?

Will Pothos jump on T’Pol again?

What’s T’Pol doing right now?

Any guesses?

  1. Nice snippet 🙂 Here are my guesses: I think Pothos will absolutely jump on T’Pol again! Each and every time! And I think T’Pol is regretting not shaking Trip’s hand! Of course Trip won’t obey Jon’s order!

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
