Blooms Wide Open; June 28, 2017

Hi there!

Yes, I know. Round 2 is over, and Round 3 doesn’t start until next week.

But I’m not fond of stopping during the breaks, in part because I break my goals down into monthly batches. So, while it’s officially a break between rounds, I’ve got 2.5 days left to June as I type this – and there are still several things on my goals list that I haven’t yet wrapped up. While I might not be able to get to all of them, I certainly don’t want to stop with those still waiting.

Truth is, I love writing and writing-things.

I just plain don’t want to stop.

A break would be a kind of punishment.

I’m not into punishing myself. I’m happier when I’m moving toward my goals. It’s part of living my life with intention, awareness, and joy. Writing and writing-things make me happy, and I like being happy. =D

So, here’s my penultimate June update. I’ll post the final one (and my July goals) on Saturday, July 1 – and then my Round 3 goals on Sunday, July 2.

How about you?

Do you use the break to reset, rest, renew, recharge?

Or are you happier just going on with your writing?

  • JuNoWriMo: Write 50,000 words of raw material for blog posts. 50,087/50,000 words! Primary goal COMPLETED!
  • Play with fiction writing as/if desired. Did a snippet of new writing for next week’s upcoming WIPpet post; and a flash fiction story this week’s #SoCS post. Secondary goal COMPLETED!

  • JuNoWriMo: Plot/outline blog posts as needed to complete the drafting goal above. I have enough material in development to carry me through maybe a dozen or so additional posts. Secondary goal EXCEEDED!

  • Holly Lisle’s How to Revise Your Novel: Complete Lesson 3 (in progress; check beginning point) using “On Any Tuesday Night” as my WIP. Skim Lessons 4 and 5; make decision regarding how much I can reasonably take on, and set an endpoint for this month’s progress. Notes completed (82 pages; 21 scenes). Primary goal nearing completion.

Social Media:

  • Blogging: Revise/polish/package relevant blogposts in order to return to a regular blogging schedule. Designate reblogged/repurposed posts or work ahead to cover July’s schedule. Posting to par for the week thus far, with a post scheduled to post later in the week; last weekend post in development. Primary goal on target.

  • Other Platforms: Resume posting to my Facebook Writer page, Instagram, and Pinterest.Complete Patreon profile and launch Secondary goal on target.

  • Continue in Twitter #writingcrew and #AllStarTrek sprints/chats regularly. Dabble in other social media (LinkedIn, Medium, Quora, Wattpad) if/as desired. Sprints Sun./Mon. AM.; Chat Mon. AM. Stretch goal on target.

  • Create a writing business plan using this excellent article by Angela Ackerman as a guide. Step 4/7 in progress; getting close to the end. Primary goal on target.

  • Assist my Accomplice with his labeling/branding/platform/marketing (if this is scary for me; it’s completely alien to him). Created a Facebook Business Page, signage, and two simple business cards. Attended local farmer’s market with him; first time. Will be updating/ adding as needed. Secondary goal on target.
  • Complete Build Your Marketing Muscles  class; simmer; draft an action plan to apply what I’ve learned, and experiment with early changes/additions to my currently nearly non-existent “marketing plan. Finished up all the course materials I missed during the “live” session. Simmering prior to beginning action plan. Stretch goal.

Tending goals:

  • Hometending: Spend time at least 5x/week in mindful cleaning and/or yardtending; complete all homeschool paperwork and testing; deal with subscriptions and other business that tends to get pushed aside; support other indie writers as I’m able. 2017-2018 Letters of Intent submitted; simmering IHIPs. Hometending 2/5. Ran Twitter sprints for #JuNoWriMo.

  • Selftending: Spend time with my beloveds, friends, and myself; get at least one hour of physical activity 5x/week, and five hours of strenuous activity weekly (including Baby Steps to 5K); meditate and journal 8x/week.

A Pile of Moments for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

I’m getting into this very good habit of setting this post up early – it’s Thursday night as I type this (and Saturday morning, early, as I finish it up in my blog template). I’ve found that, when I wait to do these small blogging tasks, life tends to suck up the time, and, before I know it, I’m rushing to get things done.

Now that I really realize that the problem is the assumption that I’ll find the time, rather than a serious flaw in my motivation and commitment, I’m starting to learn how to work with it.

I even managed to read last week’s posts before they went away!

These are just two of the benefits of my taking the month of June to focus on drafting for my blog. There are many others – but that’s not the point of this post, and it’s not why you’re here, so let’s get on with the business of the day, shall we?

It’s time for another installment of my finally-getting–sassy-TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise . It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

Trip’s “Vulcan Surprise Package” has just walked into his life for the second time –and he’s seeing lots of possibilities….

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is June 28, 2017.
  • I have 6 paragraphs for you today – for the month.

A Pile of Moments

Then again, she was right there in front of him, and the rear view was – well, completely worthy of this sweet little ship. The strangely patterned one-piece outfit she wore covered her from neck to boots, but it didn’t do a damned thing to hide those lush curves and taut lines that had grabbed hold of his imagination a year ago. How in hell could the Vulcan High Command send her to a ship whose crew was two-thirds human males, dressed like that, and expect anyone to focus on work?

Not very damned logical, was it?

He thought of Soval, and Mr. Velik, his visiting sophomore biology teacher, and how dry and passionless both were. Then again, maybe the Vulcans never considered how taking this lovely young woman out of her robes would affect the crew. Maybe they didn’t even notice…

Come to think of it, Jon didn’t seem to notice how tempting she was, either – and he wasn’t exactly “extending her every courtesy,” or anything else. She made a tiny little sniffing sound, and he responded tersely, “Is there a problem?”

“No, sir.” Her voice was guarded, walled off – but Trip just heard her whispering her mantra while she clutched a light pole, and remembered her wide, unshuttered eyes pulling him into her while Silas played –

Now might not be the time, but they had eight days, and a simple taxi run – okay, a taxi run into the unknown, but still, there would have to be a pile of moments they could use to get to know each other a whole lot better.

Will Trip get the chance to explore those moments with her?

Will they live up to his fantasies?

What history does Trip have with this woman?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my page, or go directly to my Story A Day May drabbles  – a loosely-connected serial of bite-sized, 100 word stories written to prompts.

Read one, all, or anywhere in between – these are the seeds of longer stories to come, and each one has its own tiny little twist.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!
