A New Note for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

Confession time. Here’s what I’ve got. *

I’m writing this post very early – like before 7am on Saturday early.** I don’t usually do this, but the kids’ quarterly homeschool reports are due on Thursday, and I’ve been busy with the omniscient Other Things, and have barely made a start, so my plan is to “clear the decks” so to speak, and then focus on the reports as a primary goal until they’re submitted.

So anything I wrote today about the week to come might be obsolete by the time you read this. Therefore, maybe we should just get on with the snippet, since I’m pretty sure that’s the reason you’re here…

*Sometimes, I mix fandoms. Often, I use gratuitous Hamilton quotes anywhere they fit!

**And still, life got in the way of my plans, and it’s Thursday evening, and it’s still not posted. But, on the other hand, the reports have been submitted, and the state-required standardized tests have been ordered. What’s that they say about the best laid plans of mice and writers? =/

It’s time for another installment of my on-the-verge-of-getting–sassy-I-promise TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise. It’s a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects. I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

Recap:

T’Pol, struggling to maintain control, loses it at the sound of a specific voice, and is about to enter the room it came from earlier than she had intended.

Today, we shift to the POV of the owner of that voice.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is June 14, 2017. ***
  • I have 11 sentences for you today – I added the digits for the day and month.

***Except that it’s not, anymore…

A New Note

The door chime sounded. While Jon answered, Trip made sure he was almost slouched in the not-quite-comfortable guest chair. There’d only been one Vulcan in his life he hadn’t seemed to irritate the hell out of, and he figured it was more logical to just go with it than try to change it.

The door slipped open – and he damned near jumped out of the chair before he got his muscles back to completely-at-ease. Well, most of them, anyway.

He smelled her even before he saw her. That orangey, smoky, scent he remembered was laced with a new note, delicately spicy with a hint of something like jasmine. But now she was here, stepping over the threshold, and Trip stared the way he had at the first water bottle he saw when he and Jon came out of survival training in Alice Springs.

Damn! She looked straight at him, her hazel eyes intense and saying things he didn’t quite understand, except that some part of him knew exactly what she meant. He wanted to hold that contact forever, but she was already moving briskly into the room, spine straight as a Y axis as she turned to face Jon.

So why does Trip recognize the Vulcan woman?

What’s up with the way she smells?
What will happen next?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page, or go directly to my Story A Day May drabbles – a loosely-connected serial of bite-sized, 100 word stories written to prompts.

Read one, all, or anywhere in between – these are the seeds of longer stories to come, and each one has its own tiny little twist.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

Note: This is what happens when fans get hold of Star Trek. Video potentially a bit too saucy for work or small children.
