Hidden Message for #StaD May Day Twenty-Four

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 24’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy.

The Prompt:

  • Write a story with a hidden message.

Main Project Premise:

  • Marilyn writes a letter with a secret message included – and puts it in a bottle.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Marilyn needs to get out of this house, and out of the cycle she’s in – so she writes a coded message and puts it in one of Mom’s wine bottles. Once it goes to the recycling center, someone will find it and rescue her. Then she goes to her couch and escapes the only way she can.

My Favorite Bit of Escape from this Hell”

I’m grounded again. Grounded – and for what? Having a good time? Really – who the hell am I hurting? No one. It’s not even like Mom is ever here. Oh, no! She’s a hell of a lot more into having her own good time – and there’s no one who will ground her. Even though she’s abandoned me – or would that be negLect?

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Soval codes a personal letter to his kindaughter.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Soval wishes to communicate his affection and concern for his kindaughter T’Pol, whom he has sent to conduct independent scientific research on Terra. He can’t tell her outright that he wishes her to explore; this communication may be monitored by the High Command, which he has reason to be wary of. However, his family has devised a code that will allow him to offer suggestions – she won’t read them consciously, but her deeper awareness will perceive them, and he has little doubt that she will react accordingly.
