Hidden Mesage: #StoryADay May; Day Twenty-Four

The Prompt:

  • Write a story with a hidden message.

  • Fair Warning: Potentially NSFW; language and suggestive themes.

“Escape from this Hell”

I’m grounded again. Grounded – and for what? Having a good time? Really – who the hell am I hurting? No one. It’s not even like Mom is ever here. Oh, no! She’s a hell of a lot more into having her own good time – and there’s no one who will ground her. Even though she’s abandoned me – or would that be negLect?

Or is it both?

Does it even matter? Parents do just whatever the hell they want to. Dear dead Daddy just walked off like I was nothing to him – had to make a new tropical model daughter. And Mom’s off fucking anyone she can – but I’m not supposed to want anyone, or anything.

There’s no place for ME here! And yet, here I am, stuck here where there’s only space, but none really for me, except what I’ve made in my own room – and what I said in big letters. I’m putting this in the wine bottle as soon as I get it emptied – so, if you find this, please – read carefully, and notice my capital effort at escape from this hell.

Marilyn Morgan

What is Marilyn trying to say?

Will anyone receive her message?

If they do, will they understand?

Why exactly is she grounded?

Any guesses?

Hidden Mesage: #StoryADay May; Day Twenty-Four

The Prompt:

  • Write a story with a hidden message.

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

Prompt Words:

kitndavj:

  • Aerobics

  • Photophobia

  • diatomaceous

  • stockholm

  • rhombus

  • Stonefish

  • Red Coral

  • Triangle, Rectangle, Circle, Oval, Square (childrens’ song- my 4yo loves it).

  • Spinifex

  • Stratigraphy

  • Mitral Valve Prolapse (in honour of actress who played Liz Cutler on the show)

  • Epoxy

  • Resin

And now I offer you:

Topics of Consideration

From Soval, Ambassador to T’Pol, Scientific Attache, on extended Terran exploration:

Topics of consideration for future independent research (adapted shape suggests a
triangle for motion):

  • Terran epoxy and resin production (circle arranged to intersect the triangle, indicates diversity).

  • Photophobia in nocturnal species.

  • Marine animals: red coral and stonefish (approximate a rhombus signifying multiple perspectives).

  • Mitral valve prolapse and aerobic activity (oval of approval).

  • Spinifex grasses and stratigraghy of Terra (square indicating authority of the High Command).

  • Diatomaceous earth (rectangle to indicate authority stretched to accommodate alternative approaches and explorations).

  • Stockholm Syndrome in Terran captives (a contextual suggestion of self-liberation).

Why is Soval coding this meesage?

What would happen if the High Command discovered it?

Will T’Pol understand his intent?’

And what is that intent, precisely?

Any guesses?

The List for #StaD May Day Twenty-Three

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 23’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy.

The Prompt:

  • Write a story in the form of a list.

Main Project Premise:

  • Ophelia is writing a pros and cons list regarding Marilyn.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • A month into her time with Marilyn, Ophelia is exhausted, frustrated, angry, lonely, and, maybe most of all, scared. She calls her mom, who asks her if she wants to come home – if she wants company and/or help. Ophelia already knows the second one’s not an option, but the first – she does want to come home, and she wants to stay here with Marilyn… So she does the only thing that might help her clarify things….makes a pros and cons list for staying here.

My Favorite Bit of The Pros and Cons of Staying Here:

Pros:

  •

  •

  • (I guess I’ll come back to this…can’t think of a single one right now…)

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • T’Pol keeps a list that violates protocol in numerous ways.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • T’Pol has been experiencing stray thoughts and random communications that can’t logically be her own. She strongly suspects they belong to the human named Trip, and they constitute several mysteries – many of the words and phrases are attached to nothing; others a single image; others memories of an intricate nature. Moreover, the seemingly random nature of these thoughts indicates a significant difference in mental processing. She keeps a record of these thoughts and images, knowing that it is a breach of protocol, and that she might be seriously compromised by what appears to be a level of telepathic contact she hadn’t known existed among her people, and which might easily indicate a mental imbalance on her part.

Word List:

  • Prompt Word Donor: kitndavj (the words are the list, for the most part!)

Favorite Bit (the title T’Pol gave to her list):

Research List: Words and Imagery from the Mind of a Human Male Called Trip; Pending Inquiry into the Nature of the Unexplained Telepathic Contact Which Precipitated My Sensing of These Disordered and Seemingly Random Thoughts (With Notation of Extraneous Information, When Available).

Sumptuous Settings for #StaD May Day Twenty-Two

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 22’s prompt  is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy.

The Prompt:

  • Write a story (set in your novel’s world) that makes sensation a priority. Use all five senses.

Main Project Premise:

  • Marilyn is on yet another trip…she and her couch become the entire universe!

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Marilyn is on acid – way too much acid. She’s become her couch again, and then the most incredible thing happens. She and the couch become the universe, with a plaid-toned skin of stars, holding all of existence within them and breathing space.

My Favorite Bit ofSpace Smells Like Cinnamon”:

Space smells like cinnamon. So she says it again, and again, until all those sibilant “s” sounds get spikily pierced and punched by the sharp “p” and “k”. The other sounds – the “l”, “m”, and “n” are the salve that soothes the soreness, and the vowels are gentle breezes – carrying the smell of cinnamon.

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Lizzie’s planned a special treat.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Trip comes home after a long and gueling day of being grilled, and confronts a celebration provided by his sister Elizabeth, who calls it “therapy”. Every sense is well represented – so why does he still feel hollow…?

Word List:

kitndavj:

  • potato

  • angelhair

  • orchid

  • Opiate

  • Matisse

  • Burgundy

  • Alliteration

  • Onomatopoeia

  • Violin

  • Flute

  • Silk

  • Mini m&m’s

  • Honeyeater

  • Hummingbird

  • Kingfisher

  • Cheesecake

Favorite Bit from: Splendiforous Superlative Sublime Sensory Spectacular!”

“Mmm….smells amazing!”

“Pan-fried catfish, broccoli, garlic-mashed potatoes; shrimp scampi with angelhair pasta. Key lime cheesecake, with mini M&M’s for snacking. Sit down.”

The Pros and Cons of Staying Here for #StoryADay May; Day Twenty-Three

The Prompt:

  • Write a story in the form of a list.

The Pros and Cons of Staying Here:

Pros:

  • (I guess I’ll come back to this…can’t think of a single one right now…)

Cons:

  • The baby is already a lost cause; it’s going to die, and there’s nothing anyone can do to change that, because people need brains to live, and this baby doesn’t have one (I need to stop crying about this; it doesn’t seem to bother Marilyn at all, even when I can get her to talk about being pregnant, which is almost never, even though her belly is getting huge).

  • I’m not helping Marilyn get off drugs (even rehab can’t do that, apparently, so how the hell would I be able to, when I’m virtually a stranger to her?)

Pros:

  • (I’ve still got nothing. Need to try harder, but – )

Cons:

  • I’m already trying as hard as I can, and it’s not working (I feel old and used-up, and I only turned sixteen five months ago! If I stay here much longer, I’m going to be an old woman inside by the time everything’s said and done – if it ever even is. What will she be like, after this baby is born, and dies?)

  • I fucking hate this house (I feel like it’s sucking away my life and my soul, and maybe like it’s already turned Marilyn into a husk of a human. There’s things she’s not telling me about growing up here, I’m sure of that. She’s been poisoned, somehow, more than by the drugs, I mean…)

Pros:

  • (Nope – nothing yet. There’s got to be something, hasn’t there?)

Cons:

  • Marilyn is often abusive, destructive, sometimes even violent (Need to ask Mom to send some money to cover the security deposit if I can’t get the walls scrubbed clean where she wrote on them, and my wrists are sore where she grabbed me yesterday, and I’m afraid she’s going to keep escalating…)

  • She’s secretive, and I know she’s hiding drugs, and fucking guys every chance she gets in order to score more (she’ll take anything, and screw anyone, it seems, as long as she can score her next fix. She takes so many drugs, it’s maybe a wonder she’s still alive at all…and she might not be, at any moment, and then I’ll have to deal with a pregnant corpse, and I have no idea if I can handle that and I need to stop thinking this way and find something positive, damn it, so I can go to sleep, because there’s no telling when the next explosion is coming and think positive damn it -)

Pros:

  • (Damn it – I need to think of something – anything! – that makes all this worthwhile for anyone involved…but what, when there doesn’t seem to be one good thing about any of this?)

Cons:

  • Marilyn blames me for everything that’s wrong in her life (well, maybe not that, or not exactly that. More like she blames my existence, or my mom and our dad, even though Mom didn’t know he was married and already had a child, and she didn’t expect to get pregnant the very first time she had sex, and, well, I really can’t say a damned thing to exonerate a father I’ve never known, except that I know Mom has good taste, and he must have talked a very good game…)

  • I don’t think I’m strong enough to handle this (and I know that Marilyn isn’t. She’s unhinged, lost in her damage, and no one can help her, not even the professionals, so how the hell am I supposed to help her? And yet…she does need help, needs someone, needs love maybe more than anyone I’ve ever met in my life – wait, maybe that’s it…)

Pros:

  • She needs me (and maybe I need her, too…)

Will Ophelia be able to think of anything to add to the pro list?

What about the cons?

Is this one pro enough to keep her here?

Any guesses?

  • Lady Gaga

  • panda

  • wombat

  • horse on a spaceship

Why is T’Pol intent on researching these words and phrases?

What does she hope to gain by this?

Will her research be productive?

Any guesses?

Societal World Building for #StaD May Day Twenty-One

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 21’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy.

The Prompt:

  • Write a story focusing on an aspect of society that matters to you/your story. How did society get to the place where this is important?

Main Project Premise:

  • Ophelia considers the implications of being “a bastard” in her own hometown, and here on the mainland.

Fleshing Out the Premise: (NSFW or young kids)

  • The attitudes in Ophelia’s home village, and her island are relaxed regarding non-traditional families. No one seems to care that she has never had a father in her life; no one judged her for it. But here, in the exclusive gated community where Marilyn was raised, her illegitimacy and her coloring mark her as somehow, indefinably “less than.”

My Favorite Bit of “Dave Morgan’s Tropical Bastard”:

The two women look right at Ophelia – they don’t even have the decency to pretend they’re not gossiping about her. Another reason to hate this pretentious gated community. Back home, no one ever mentioned or even cared that her father had never been in the picture, that he had a wife and daughter on the mainland, or that Ophelia’s mom had succumbed to his charms during a long hot Hawaiian night beneath a full moon.

That type of thing happens. Who would judge anyone else for having normal human desires, and sometimes getting swept away by them?

Back home, no one.

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Soval’s meditations reveal that he must do what he can to exonerate his kindaughter’s human Intended, as a matter of honor.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Soval listens in to another interview with Lieutenant Tucker, wherein the human becomes angered and lists all the things he could be doing if he wasn’t in Starfleet – but Soval realizes that this man would be ideal for long-range exploration, and perhaps also for his kindaugter, the infant who had dared the flame. More, this was clearly a matter of honor and truth.

Word List:

kitndavj:

  • snorkel

  • custard

  • polysaccharide

  • neoprene

  • volleyball

  • aluminum

  • 6ft of garden hose

  • boardshorts

  • scuba

  • impeller

  • glass bottomed boat

  • HUET (helicopter Underwater Egress Training)

Writing Group Members:

  • plethora

  • rhadamanthine

Writing Prompt List:

  • interview

Favorite Bit from A Plethora of Objectives:

Once this damned interviews over, I’m living in boardshorts and neoprene. Perfect my volleyball form; snorkel; scuba dive. Turn my aluminum skiff into a glass-bottom boat; test my new impeller design. Take HUET training. Figure out how to turn custard into crème brulee. Overdose on polysaccharides. Fantasize about my Vulcan Surprise Package.”
