Protagonist’s Journal for #StaD May Day Seventeen

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 17’s prompt is from StoryADay creator Julie Duffy.

The Prompt:

Write a story about the days leading up to the beginning of your novel, or your story’s big incident. Alternatively, write a journal of those days from your protagonist’s point of view.

Main Project Premise:

  • On the point of leaving for tropical climes with a very pregnant Marilyn, Ophelia writes truth in her journal.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • In a journal entry, Ophelia explores Marilyn’s refusal to accept the fact of her pregnancy, or the dire condition of a baby who can’t survive long outside the womb. She’s treating the trip to Kifo Island as a “vacation”, and will only talk about all the “cool things” they’re going to do there – as if she isn’t eight months pregnant and shooting up every chance she gets.

My Favorite Bit of They’re True:

She sighs, and turns to look out the window at the world passing below them. Time to leave the harshness of a Midwest winter, and return to a climate she’s more familiar with.

Her hand, which has been paused over the page, moves, and these words emerge:

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • T’Pol, alone on Earth, makes an entry in her journal.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • During a Yellowstone blizzard, T’Pol meditates and reflects upon her present location, and the decision that led her here. Elements of her current location blend with elements of that night in San Francisco.

Word List:

kitndavj:

  • Pharmaceutical

  • Iron Pyrite (Fool’s Gold)

  • Carcinoma

  • snowdrift

  • Cougar

  • Telemetry

  • Modular

  • Technical

  • Challenger (the space shuttle)

  • Mountains

  • Stratigraphy

  • Seismic

  • Succession

Braxin:

  • tempestuous

  • forbidden

  • predatory

Favorite Bit from A Succession of Consequences:

T’Pol pauses, looking out the window of the modular unit. A snowdrift obscures her view; the tempestuous weather reminding her of a blue-eyed human, a forbidden excursion, and the succession of consequences that brought her here, to Yellowstone.
