Nightmare for #StoryADay May; Day Fourteen

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 14’s prompt is from Maria Hazen Lewis, who writes women’s fiction in Pennsylvania.

The Prompt:

I had a nightmare last night. I woke up and started writing….

Main Project Premise:

  • Ophelia wakes up and questions Marilyn about what she’s doing.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Marilyn wakes from a nightmare, and finds herself on Ophelia’s bed, the dream still in her mind. Ophelia is asleep on the floor. Marilyn raids the stash in another one of the dolls, and then she begins to write – on the dolls, her arms, the sheet and quilt, the walls, and even the leather-bound volume of Shakespeare.

My Favorite Bit of Exploding Words

She should take care of the evidence right now, before she forgets. But there are words in her – that was the dream, wasn’t it? She was full of words, exploding words that were held under too much pressure….

And now she feels them again. Filling her up, crushing each other. Crushing her internal organs and her brain and her breath. She has to get them out, or they’ll crush and suffocate and drown her, all at once.

She needs a pen.

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

Fair Warning: This is just a touch naughty at the beginning. Might not be suitable for younger kids or work reading.

  • T’Pol’s dream is distressing – she has caused Trip unintentional harm, and she must correct the misapprehension, even at the cost of her own service on this world.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • She dreamed with Trip – but, unlike him, T’Pol suspects these incidents to be more than her own imagination. And, if they truly are some form of telepathic contact, unlikely as that seems, she can’t discount the possibility that she has caused him harm, however unintentionally. She must do what she can to correct the error, and mitigate the damage.
