Misapprehension for #Story A Day; May 13

Hello there, and welcome to my Story a Day May “Show My Work” post! This is where I give you a sneak peek into how I’m creating two (very short, and very different) stories, every day this May. Yep, that’s right; less than 24 hours from my first reading of the prompt to a committed story, even if I’m not quite that fast at posting them!

Ready to read?

Well then, what are we waiting for?

Story A Day May 13’s prompt  is from Tony Conaway, who has written and ghostwritten everything from blogs to books. He has cowritten non-fiction books published by McGraw-Hill, Macmillan and Prentice Hall. His fiction has been published in eight anthologies and numerous publications, including Blue Lake Review, Danse Macabre, Rind Literary Magazine, qarrtsiluni, The Rusty Nail and Typehouse Literary Magazine. He was recently a guest on the Indy Writer Podcast, talking about writing short fiction.

The Prompt:

Today’s prompt focuses on misapprehension – that is, interpreting something incorrectly. Too often, in fiction, every character communicates perfectly. That’s not the way it happens in real life. So that’s your prompt: misapprehension, either verbal or visual.

Main Project Premise:

  • Ophelia reflects on her initial misapprehensions about her half-sister Marilyn.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Ophelia watches Marilyn “on the nod” on her own daybed, surrounded by dolls, and remembers their first meeting, when Marilyn came looking for her in Hawaii. She thought then that her sister was vibrant, fun-loving, and just about perfect. It’s amazing how the truth can change first impressions…

My Favorite Bit ofSo Many Secrets”:

Ophelia’s learned a lot, in the three months she’s been here.

She’s learned a hell of a lot about things she never wanted to learn about, or be close to. Things she doesn’t want tormenting anyone, and certainly not her sister.

She’s learned about a thousand things she was mistaken about.

Side Project Premise:

Standard disclaimer. I don’t own them, I don’t profit from them, but they insist on telling me their stories, so I’m sharing them with you.

  • Trip is dreaming of a conversation with his Vulcan Surprise Package, when a misapprehension surfaces.

Fleshing Out the Premise:

  • Trip’s dreams bring him right back to Fusion, and his Vulcan Surprise Package. She knows somehow that he’s in trouble. He tells her about the five men who accused him – and now she seems troubled, and is starting to explain a ‘misapprehension’ when he wakes up.

Trip was standing on a boardwalk.

“You’re troubled, Trip.” He loved when she popped into his dreams.
