Old Scars; New Urgency for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

Hello there, fellow WIPpeteers – and, to those just along for the ride – welcome! Hop in, get comfy…but don’t leave popcorn in the center seat!

So, I never made it here last week. I meant to – but….there’s this thing called life, and sometimes it stymies me. Sometimes, it gives me a fifteen year old who realized that an eye exam might be a good idea before he’s old enough to take his permit test in a few months. Sometimes that leads to a very pleasant excursion with a guy who’s growing up so fast it’s a little bewildering…and who can still act like a goofy kid who hasn’t quite grown up enough to fit his man-sized body.

So that’s what I was doing last week – that, and getting behind on my Story A Day May projects. I’m happy to report that I’m caught up with the writing, now – but I’m still woefully behind with the posting. So many balls in the air (my Accomplice is launching a business, and I’m his one-woman design, labeling, and marketing crew; homeschool reports are due next month, and another round of standardized testing is on the horizon; there’s still hometending and other writing and and and…)! Still, I hope to be a lot closer to caught up by the time this slower-paced week ends…

But enough about all that. Some of you are here for TnT action, and you’ve been patiently reading through the setup, waiting for T’Pol to get to Enterprise, where her blue-eyed human distraction awaits her…

This is the week that puts her, literally, at the threshold!

Ready? OK, then... on to the WIPpet!

Today I offer you another installment of my soon-to-get-sassy-I-promise TnT fan fiction story, adapted from Humanity’s Enterprise.

I’ve got a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects – and I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

Soval has informed T’Pol of her involuntary assignment to the Terran Warp Five vessel, Enterprise – and she has discovered that a certain blue-eyed human will be aboard. She reacts strongly to this information, and Soval suggested that she meditate to recover her equilibrium.

Now, we skip ahead a little, to join T’Pol at the entrance to Captain Archer’s Ready Room, where she will formally begin her new assignment.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is May 24, 2017.

  • I have 6 paragraphs for you today. I added the digits of the day.

Old Scars; New Urgency

T’Pol stood at the door to the chamber the Terrans identified as the Captain’s Ready Room, listening. She heard Jonathan Archer’s voice within, the words indistinct. He didn’t want her on this mission. At their only previous meeting, less than a Terran day ago, he professed a desire to cause her bodily harm when she answered his question in a logical manner. This meeting was unlikely to be a significant improvement, as regarded her new commanding officer.

She breathed deeply, although the odor of humans was strongly layered over other unfamiliar and unpleasant scents. Illogical, perhaps, to have foregone the nasal numbing agent she had been prescribed, but there were reasons that went beyond logic, and could not be explained by it.

Her fingertips quivered, the old scars from the flame pulsing with new urgency, as she found the one olfactory signature that brought pleasure, reminding her of that long-ago flame, and the nectar. He was here, on the other side of this barrier.

Yearning tightened the muscles in her legs in preparation for forward locomotion. Yet she wouldn’t allow the action, instead taking three slow, deep breaths, holding, then releasing. Her physical response to this man was most potent. She would need her full measure of control to deal with the missions – both Enterprise’s stated purpose, and that which she had been assigned by the High Command.

Kaiidth. She would do as she must, and adhere to the directives she’d been given. It was her duty. It was what logic demanded of her. She must set aside the nectar, the flame, and the human man with eyes the color of his world’s sky, the engineer called Trip, but whose name was Charles Tucker the Third.

And still, her fingers trembled, and the scars pulsed in time with her accelerated circulatory activity.

Why are T’Pol’s fingers trembling?

What flame caused her scars?
Will she be able to protect Enterprise and her human crew?

What (or who?) awaits her on the other side of the door?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my page, or go directly to my brand-new Story A Day May drabbles  – a loosely-connected serial of bite-sized, 100 word stories written to prompts and fan prompt words.

Read one, all, or anywhere in between – these are the seeds of longer stories to come, and each one has its own tiny little twist.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy above will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

Sowing Something Different: May 24, 2017

Hi there!

There’s a change in the wind….

I don’t know yet where it will carry me – but the revision course, the marketing course, the new commitment to my personal fitness, embracing our business ventures, and the changing dynamic of life with older, far more independent kids -all of these are adding up to something rising up within me…something that will eventually break the ground, grow, and blossom…

I’m not going to rush it. I’m just going to prepare, so I’m ready when it arrives, as it eventually will. You may see it before I do, if you read here regularly.
