“Like a Human?”: #WeWriWa #8Sunday

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors’ Eight Sentence Sunday!

It’s the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write! We’ve got a variety of genres and talented writers just waiting for you to come sample their wordy wares. Come read one, or all!

I’ve been away for a couple of weeks – much as I try, I seem to get swallowed up in new projects, especially ones that are novel-length. I’ve also been very remiss in visiting and commenting…something I’m getting a gradual handle on, now that the insanity of April’s challenges is settling into the slightly saner one I’ve taken on for May.

But, all that said, it’s getting late, and I’d love to be able to make it onto the linky this week, so on we go!

“Monday Morning Coffee” has been with me since I was sixteen. A local boy with schizophrenia wandered away from his family at a large outdoor event. Several days later, he was found, deceased.

From that story came this one – the connection might not be clear to anyone but me – but it’s there.

Context:

Rose has just missed her train to be with Jeremy, who noticed and commented.

Like a Human?”

“There’ll be another – and you’re much more interesting than my job, Jeremy.” I hope he notices that I don’t say, ‘Lost Jeremy’.

His eyes are on the paper sculpture he’s creating – a rose, I think, but I don ‘t ask. “I’m glad you stayed. It’s been a very long time indeed since anyone has treated me like a human.”

Like a human?’” Tears gather at the back of my throat. Daring much, presuming more, I reach to his chin, lift and turn gently so he’s looking at me again.

Why is Rose upset by Jeremy’s words?
What is he making?
How will he react to Rose’s touch?

Any guesses you’d like to share?

Monday Morning Coffee” was originally published in the 2015 edition of World Unknown Review, edited by L.S. Engler.  Since I retain all rights beyond first publication, I intend to revise the story and add it to my backlist.

    1. Thank you, Nancy. I’m honored to be at your heart!
I would also be honored if you’d permit me to use this quote as a testimonial – but please feel free to let me know if you’re uncomfortable with that. =)

    1. Thank you. These two came as something of a surprise to me! I wasn’t expecting the emotions to run nearly so deep, or dare so much.

    1. I suspect he’s glad, too – although he hasn’t exactly said so…Thank you for stopping by, and I hope you’ll enjoy next week’s snippet. =D

    1. Thank you, Sue. Writing extremely short fiction has helped me trim my natural wordiness – some, sometimes, anyway.
"Promise/angst" sums it up beautifully, I think! =D

    1. I think, after a morning of mulling over disconnection, this simple, honest human interaction is filling a need Rose didn’t really realize she had..to care for someone else; to touch and be touched, and to connect. I’ve had that feeling from time to time with complete strangers, and it’s always a bit of a shock. Once or twice, that chance meeting has led to long-term friendship.
So maybe I was channeling my own life a bit…

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
