“Monday Morning Coffee” has been with me since I was sixteen. A local boy with schizophrenia wandered away from his family at a large outdoor event. Several days later, he was found, deceased.

From that story came this one – the connection might not be clear to anyone but me – but it’s there.

Context:

Jeremy has asked an important question; can Rose convince him to accept her gift of money?

Warm and Quiet and Dry

“Because I have to go, but I wish I could sit with you in a cafe, or my living room – or anywhere that’s warm and quiet and dry. Because, if you’re enjoying another latte, or a warm meal – and maybe thinking of me like I’ll be thinking of you…” I trail off; this is the most personal conversation I’ve had in a long time. “Maybe it’ll be almost like sharing the time together…” Rush of blood to my face, and I bite my lip, staring at his chapped, nimble hands.

“I will accept your gift, kind Rose,” Jeremy whispers. “And I’ll treasure the warmth and comfort of your companionship.” He takes the bill gently, chilled fingers lingering on mine, and I want to clench them to me and never let go.

What will he spend the money on?
Will he ever tell Rose how he used it?
Will Rose keep hold of his fingers, and herself?

Any guesses?

Monday Morning Coffee” was originally published in the 2015 edition of World Unknown Review,  edited by L.S. Engler. Since I retain all rights beyond first publication, I intend to revise the story and add it to my backlist.
