Preparing to Sow: April Goals, 2017

Welcome, April!

It’s always good to see you. The earth is warming; the days are growing longer – and that means it’s time for me to toss some new goals into fertile soil, and sprout progress!

I’ve been engaging with these goals since the month began, so I’m also reporting my progress for April 1 – and that’s no joke! =)

Do you have any special goals this month?

  • #oneword for 2017

  • Round One goals

  • 2017 Goals

  • Note: This post only contains progress for April 1, 2017, since Saturday midnight is my self-imposed deadline for the Sunday update (which I’m counting this as, even though I know that it’s Monday. Maybe we can jointly pretend it’s a belated April Fool’s joke, or something)?

A Time to Sow: ROW80 Round Two Goals 2017

Hey there!

Yes, you’ve read it right – today is the first day of ROW80 Round Two, and that means it’s time to reveal my new quarterly goals.

I’m now in the midst of my annual Creative Chaos Marathon, so several of my goals are intensive and long term.

I’m experimenting with these goals. My reach often exceeds my grasp, leaving my intentions in the dust, when I want goals that challenge, yet are still largely attainable. For this round and beyond, I’ll be seeking my level of neutral buoyancy, as we said during my scuba certification course.

What are you working on this spring (or, if it applies, fall)?
Any special goals?
Are you good at setting goals that are challenging, yet attainable?
Any tips to share?

Evaluating My March Framework: Final Update, April 3, 2017

Hey there!

March is over, which, for me, means new goals, new projects, new challenges….

But it also means it’s time to take a look at the month that was, and see what I accomplished, what remains undone, and what can be learned from that information going forward. I’ve made notes by all my headings to assess my progress in those areas.

This post is a bit on the long side, so be warned! =)

Writing: Some progress.

  • Foul Deeds Will Rise (Trueborn #2): Reread existing material; complete draft (10/50 scenes). Primary goal. Reread completed. Scene 44/50 in progress. Not great, but progress is progress. Adding to April goals.

  • Fan Fiction (The IDIC Romance): Draft three chapters for Love and Loss, based upon the drabbles I wrote in February. Secondary goal. All 30 stories collated into one 3K document; with notes. Rough outline created first scene completed. Still a ways to go, but this will be set aside for the next month or two, except as a potential play project.

Plotting: Not as much progress as I’d hoped, but what most needed doing got done, so there’s that.

  • Kifo Island. Complete The Story Toolkit for April novel; flesh out with pages from The Writer’s Coloring Book. Flesh out AeonTimeline.  File new series bible materials. Primary goal. I decided to use only the Toolkit, to give a pure evaluation. Back-burnering the timeline until drafting is complete. Note: I’ve elected to only “flesh out” my plans for each act once I’ve wrapped up the one preceding, because I generally find my stories evolving beyond plans, and then get a little lost. So, Act 1/4 (through Scene 11) is fleshed out, and, once I reach the end, I’ll apply what I’ve learned to that point to the plan for Act Two, and so on. So I’m calling this adapted goal COMPLETED; it meets my needs for beginning the drafting process.

  • Star Trek Chronology Project: Watch epsiodes 231: The Survivors -250: Hollow Pursuits . Secondary goal COMPLETED!

  • Rose and Jeremy novella: Complete Planning/plotting of “Tuesday Afternoon Tea” using The Story Toolkit and existing notes. Develop one-paragraph sketches for remaining 3-5 stories. Tertiary goal. Overall: step 12/22 in progress. Nothing new happened here; I back-burnered the goal until Round Two or Three.

Revision: A bit of progress, but the month just didn’t stretch far enough.

  • The IDIC Romance: Progress with revisions for On Any Tuesday Night (was First Contact, With Jazz), as I work through lessons 2- of Holly Lisle’s Revision Course. Continue revisions for A Backdrop of Stars 1-7. Primary goal. .OATN revisions back-burnered until April. ABOS Chapter 2; initial notes; reread chapter; began major rewrite/POV shift. Some minor progress made.

  • Short Stories: “Miss Spider and Mister Fly”; Complete edits. Secondary goal COMPLETED. (There may be a bit more to do after the copy editor reviws my story, but that is a few weeks away, still).

Submission/Publication: Not so great…maybe better progress in April.

  • Miss Spider and Mister Fly” (for Dark and Bitter anthology): follow up with editors as needed. Primary goal COMPLETED – see above.

  • The IDIC Romance: Submit A Backdrop of Stars chapters 2 and-3 to fan fiction sites as completed. Tertiary goal back-burnered.

Social Media: Decent progress here.

  • #atozchallenge: Complete and schedule all posts by March 31; make page on shanjeniah.blog; write theme reveal post and schedule for release date still TBD (keep eyes open for this). Secondary goal. All posts completed, excepting daily links and a bit of branding and tweaking. Still need to make a page on my WordPress blog for this challenge. Good progress made.

  • Blogging Features: Continue biweekly Mindful Monday and Skywatch Friday posts, as well as weekly #SoCS, #8sunday, WIPpet Wednesday, and Weekend Coffee share posts. Develop rough schedule to pre-produce April posts where possible; have all drafts in website interface or Scrivener by March 31. Tertiary goal. Some progress made; most weeks, I completed posts, till the end of the month. Not nearly as much done ahead as I had hoped, but some.

Hometending: I kinda rocked this!

  • Homeschool Administration: Draft, proof, and submit second quarter reports, due March 15. Create Flickr portfolios for this school year. Primary goal COMPLETED! Reports submitted; portfolios created and gradually being added to.

  • Resets/reorganizations: study, (1) family room, bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen. Complete three 27 thing flings each room, each week. One 27 thing fling on porch and/or yard each week. 33 General Hometending rounds weekly. Secondary goal COMPLETED! Missed a couple, but also had some excesses, so calling it even.
  • Photo digitalization: Scan 27 travel photos per week. Tertiary goal COMPLETED! All scanned. I’ll organize these in a later round.

Lifetending: Did very well here, too.

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Primary goal COMPLETED! This one’s easy!

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Secondary goal COMPLETED! Yes, to both, in numerous ways. And happily so!

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group. Tertiary goal COMPLETED! Again, on all fronts, and in various ways.

  • Paying it Forward: Offer beta reading, reviews, and promotional posts for other writers. Side goal. Some progress. No reviews.

Selftending: Decent progress.

  • Journal six mornings and four evenings each week. Meditate six mornings and three evenings weekly. Primary goal. Morning goals weren’t a problem; evening goals a little shakier. Solid progress.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 99 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly; 111 minutes (1 hour, 51 minutes) twice weekly, and 9 hours of more strenuous activities (tai chi, swimming, hiking, cardio, weights, etc.). Secondary goal. Weekly goals attained. Strenuous:5 hours, 20 minutes/9 hours; I was sick twice this month. Solid progress.

  • Smart Change: Reread Chapters 3 and 4/ complete/worksheets; create an approach plan, going forward. Tertiary goal; a bit of progress.

Leaps of Faith: Moved a bit forward.

  • Draft CV and revise. Made notes; created letterhead; simmering. A bit of progress; and a possible change in direction.

  • Intuitive Eating: Reread early chapters; consider how to incorporate into Smart Change. Back-burnered.

  • Patreon Posts: – Complete March offerings and launch site. Back-burnered.

  • Draft next chapter of Cowled based on existing notes. Back-burnered.
