“Why Did You Agree?” for WIPpet Wednesday

Hi there, and welcome to WIPpet Wednesday!

It’s a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt

I’ve been almost over-my-head-deep in plotting The Last House, my Kifo Island prequel WIP, which will be my April CampNaNoWriMo project beginning on Saturday…but I’m taking a bit of a break from that to bring you another installment of a sassy TnT fan fiction story,  just because I can!

I’ve got a patchwork of stories, written in different styles, at different times, and for different projects – and I’m slowly figuring out how to pull them all together into a coherent whole that explores just how and why T’Pol was the one Vulcan chosen to accompany Enterprise NX-01 on her maiden voyage.

There will be hints and shadows and lots of delicious Trip and T’Pol sassiness once she actually comes aboard – but first, we’ve got to lay the groundwork that gets her there, and that’s where we are right now.

Recap:

T’Pol has been summoned to the office of her superior, Ambassador Soval. He addresses her by a rank she’s never held, and they share a contact reserved for family members, after which he explains that, had she remained in service to the Vulcan High Command, she likely would have attained that rank. T’Pol observes that rank was intended to be earned, not granted based on probability….

And now, we’ll shift to Soval’s POV, and learn whether he’s going to explain this mysterious promotion and recommissioning.

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is March 29, 2017.

  • I subtracted the 2 in the date from the 9, to give you 7 sentences.

And now….on to today’s WIPpet!

“Why Did You Agree?”

“Starfleet, and perhaps this entire species, is, as yet, inadequately prepared to conduct the mission they insist upon assuming.” Soval kept his eyes averted; T’Pol was troubled, and what remained to be said would likely cause further unrest. T’Les had never been satisfied with her daughter’s ability to contain her emotional responses; he had no wish to compound the difficulty by directly witnessing what T’Pol therefore perceived as a personal failing.

“If you don’t think them capable of achieving the return of the Klingon to Qo’noS, why did you agree to allow them to attempt it?” He felt the shift in her energy as she leaned slightly forward, watching him with a directness that reminded him, perhaps illogically, of Jonathan Archer.

It would likely be unwise to express that similarity of bearing to his young kinswoman, so he did not.

“Perhaps, Sub-Commander, it’s necessary for the humans to learn this fact independently of my counsel.”

What does Soval mean?

What does this have to do with T’Pol’s recommissioning?

Will she accept the explanation?

The promotion?

Any guesses?

  1. Yes, that does seem logical, although really, I wish the Vulcans would interfere more.(Sorry for late comment – totally forgot until I realised it was nearly Wednesday again)

    1. Yes, we DO know. Too bad Captain Archer took so long to figure it out! I want to thump him every time T’Pol offers advice to be cautious, based on experience, and he ignores her, usually after insulting her for daring to be Vulcan and not human.
And she’s almost always right, too….

  2. I have a feeling those humans would be likely to argue if they were told no. Probably stamp their feet and such, too. I do like seeing us from other points of view like this.

    1. You’re absolutely right! They actually WERE told "no" shortly before this, and they didn’t respond well to it. It didn’t get better when the Vulcans referred to returning the Klingon’s corpse when he was still alive….that didn’t go over well with Jonathan Archer.
He threw a moderately more adult tantrum – no feet stamping, but some cursing and yelling, including a rather amusing veiled threat that he would knock T’Pol on her….well, you get the idea!
I think one of the reasons I love Vulcans is their insight on us. I hope I do it justice here!

    1. "Tis true. Soval’s been on Earth for 30 years now….you could say he’s probably learned a few things for himself, too. =)

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
