“A High Probability” for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt

Last week, I gave my fellow WIPpeteers what they wanted – the first installment of a sassy TnT fan fiction story

This began as a series of stories I’ve been wanting to pull together, revise, and share. So, if you’re reading this, you are, in some sense, my “test subjects” for this personal pet project. If you like what you’re reading, let me know, and there will be more….as much more as you can handle, for quite some time to come.

One thing, though…

It’s going to take a bit of setup before the sassiness factor kicks in, so please be patient with the Vulcanism at the beginning of the story. I promise – once things get rolling, there’s going to be all kinds of sassy going on in this space, and, hopefully, it’ll be worth the wait, if I’ve done my job properly. =)

Here’s the standard disclaimer. I don’t own them; I don’t make money from them; I just love them, and I tell the stories they give me as well as I can.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is March 22, 2017…the Ides of March.

  • I added the month and day: (2+2+3=7 paragraphs for 3/22)

And now….on to today’s WIPpet!

A High Probability”

She stepped closer, and moved her paired fingers until their bioelectric signatures made contact, with their emotional content transferred from one to the other. It was a brief contact, lasting only a single breath before they dropped their hands by tacit consent.

However, it was long enough to understand that there was more Soval would say, and that he was uncertain as to her reaction to the information, which almost certainly involved the irregular reassignment.

“You wish to speak, kindaughter.” He turned his chair so he wasn’t facing her directly, offering her a measure of privacy. It wasn’t a question; she was regrettably lacking in her ability to adequately screen her emotions from one as perceptive as he, particularly during such an intimate contact.

“At the time of my departure from the Seleya, my rank was Major.”

“After re-examination of your service record, it was determined that, had you remained with the High Command, there was a significant probability that you would have attained the rank of Subcommander by this point.”

“A high probability is not equivalent to a certainty. Rank is intended to be earned, not granted.” It would be illogical to say more. T’Pol waited silently for Soval to elucidate and clarify. She had known him her entire life; she was certain that he would do so.

She was correct.

What did Soval sense from T’Pol in the ouz’hesta?

Will she accept this promotion?

Why has she been promoted?

What does this mean for T’Pol?

Any guesses?

If you enjoyed this snippet, and want something more before next Wednesday, you can pop over to my fanfiction.net page, or go directly to Loveuary Drabbles, where you will find bite-sized, 100 word stories written to prompts.

Read one, all, or anywhere in between – these are the seeds of longer stories to come, and each one has its own tiny little twist.

And, as always, clicking the little blue froggy below will carry you on to other WIPpet offerings from our talented and diverse group of writerly folks. You can even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined!

  1. I missed last week’s – sorry about that. I’ve caught up now, though! I’m far too enthralled for guessing. I love T’Pol.

    1. Well, I certainly haven’t been very prompt at answering comments, either, so I guess I can’t complain! =)
You’ll be happy to know, I think, that T’Pol lives in my head. She’s been known to wake me up at four in the morning and tell me stories about her life that make me cry – because, you know, SHE doesn’t want to cry.
T’Pol is such a wonderful, refreshing character to write. I hope you enjoy this story; I love finding other folks who appreciate her as much as I do! =)

  2. Ooh interesting. I don’t have any guesses, because I don’t know the characters or world well enough. I actually quite like the Vulcanism.

    1. I’m glad, because, even once the sassiness gets going, there will still be some Vulcanisms to enjoy!

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
