“Monday Morning Coffee” has been with me since I was sixteen. A local boy with schizophrenia wandered away from his family at a large outdoor event. Several days later, he was found, deceased.

From that story came this one – the connection might not be clear to anyone but me – but it’s there.

Context:

Rose is finding that Jeremy is far more than he originally seemed.

Warmer than Steaming Coffee

He looks at me, his gaze open and inviting, and it sends something warmer than steaming coffee through me, centering in my belly, and radiating outward. Jeremy smiles, bringing a dimple to the right corner of his mouth. It tempts a return smile from me. Then he turns to the comic pages. He starts to fold, tear, and twist. I clutch the money and hold it out to him. “Please take this, Jeremy. Consider it a holiday gift.”

Will Jeremy accept the money as a gift?
What is he doing with that newspaper?
Will he show his dimple again?

Any guesses you’d like to share?

Monday Morning Coffee” was originally published in the 2015 edition of World Unknown Review,  edited by L.S. Engler.  Since I retain all rights beyond first publication, I intend to revise the story and add it to my backlist-in-the making.

    1. I promise you will eventually learn what it is.
I don’t promise you’ll end up with no new questions, though. =)

    1. Thanks, Veronica.
I was rather surprised when he showed me what he was making. I hope you will be, too.
So honored that you’re enjoying my little yarn. Unusual it certainly is!
