Monday Morning Coffee” has been with me since I was sixteen. A local boy with schizophrenia wandered away from his family at a large outdoor event. Several days later, he was found, deceased.

From that story came this one – the connection might not be clear to anyone but me – but it’s there. Today, I offer you nine sentences…

Context:

Rose gave Lost Jeremy her name, her coffee, and then her companionship.

Remembering the Grace Notes

His breath steams sweetly, and his posture gradually straightens as he drinks. It’s as though his body and mind are remembering the grace notes of a life he’d lived once, but which had been long forgotten. I can see him sitting in the coffeehouse, or the diner, warm enough on the outside, too, at least for a little while. It’s Monday. My wallet is freshly stocked with my week’s spending money. I can spare what he can certainly use.

I fish into my oversized purse for the wallet that always seems to be playing hide-and-seek in its depths. Jeremy sets the mug in the small space between us, and reaches for his bag. “Now it is time that I repay you, Rose.”

How does Lost Jeremy plan to repay Rose?
Is Rose right about the grace notes in his life?

Any guesses you’d like to share?

“Monday Morning Coffee” was originally published in the 2015 edition of World Unknown Review,  edited by L.S. Engler.  Since I retain all rights beyond first publication, I intend to revise the story and add it to my backlist.

I often listen to Loreena McKennit while I write. 🙂
