She Floated: Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles Volume 1) for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

Hi there!

Did I visit anyone (or everyone?) last week? I think I did.

Let’s say I did. Let’s say I’ll be able to do it again, too…and let’s also say that, if I didn’t visit you, and you shared on the WIPpet linky, I’m sorry I missed you. It’s been a week of delving deeply into Many Things, and we’re still making the adjustment from my Accomplice working dinner shifts to breakfast and lunch ones, as he settles into this new job and the new routines that go with it.

But all that aside, we’re here today for WIPpet Wednesday, so let’s dive in, shall we?

We’re still with Ava Garcia in Sea Changes, from my Kifo Island series.

Ava was a constant revelation during the writing of her story. Her struggle goes beyond the issue of whether people should be allowed to choose the manner of their death. She encapsulates my personal attitudes about how children deserve to be treated. It’s an honor to share her voice with you!

The Premise:

In advocating for a dying girl seeking emancipation from controlling parents, can an overburdened young woman and a lonely young man find a future together?

Note:

This passage has been rough-edited (trust me, you don’t want to see the muddled-beyond-hope original version! I’ll be creating a more structured revision plan once the 24 scenes pass through my local crit group (proceeding very slowly), and I’ve completed Holly Lisle’s How to Revise Your Novel class.

Your input is gratefully accepted, and might go a long way toward making this a better novel!

Context:

Ava presses her luck.

Warning: Her father has a potty mouth. You have been warned – NSFW!

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is February 8, 2017

  • I used the digits of the month and day, subtracting 2 from 8 for 6 short paragraphs.

She Floated

But she wasn’t there, and he wasn’t here. She was thousands of miles away, and she was going to be dead soon enough. Out of his reach forever. For the first time in her life, she could say exactly what she wanted, and he couldn’t do a damned thing to her.

“Well, that’s too bad, Papi. I’m not telling you. No one will. The confidentiality agreements here are what you would call iron-clad.” Why was she doing this?

A memory of her dream. Because she was following the bubbles, and the bubbles were leading her. She floated; her father couldn’t touch her here.

Are you – yes, freak, I mean you! – fucking my daughter?”

She was drowning in the dream, wasn’t she? Wasn’t that why she needed to follow the bubbles?

Sir, I assure you -”

What assurance will Donovan make?

How will Ava’s father receive it?

What will Ava do?

What happens next?

Next week, we may get more answers…

Time to Ascend: #Loveuary Day Eight

Ritu from But I Smile Anyway created the #Loveuary blog hop, which feels like a perfect time to explore the next three chapters of my Star Trek: Enterprise TnT fan fiction story, Love and Loss – a hundred words at a time.

I’m using word prompts for each day, randomly gathered. Prompt words appear in bold, and today’s contributors are credited at the end of the post.

One more thing: Standard disclaimer applies. I don’t own these characters or the world they inhabit. They just like whispering and shouting stories into my brain, which I share with you freely, as an act of love.

Time to Ascend

Trip let himself breathe bubbles, pretending T’Pol was here with him instead of Jon.

Could Vulcans even swim? Would she have been willing to try scuba?

He imagined being side by side in these deep waters, this deeper dark, holding hands and blowing bubbles they couldn’t see. It would be intimate; just for them. Koss wouldn’t have been invited. Trip was getting goosebumps under the neoprene of his wetsuit, thinking about it, about feeling her with him in the dark deep waters of his world.

Enough of this procrastination. It was time to ascend, and face the light of reality.

Will Trip ever get the chance to blow bubbles in the dark with T’Pol?

Come on back tomorrow, and don’t forget to stop by and see Ritu, as well!

Today’s story, and the video that goes with it, are special to me. The inspiration for this drabble came from the Ballroom Cavern in Ginnie Springs, Florida, where my Accomplice and I had our first cavern dives, including a magical night dive where we turned off our lights, held hands, and blew bubbles together. It was magical…see?

Building From Deep Places: February 8, 2017

Hey there!

I’ve been delving deeply this week – a lot of reading, a lot of plotting, some deep conversation online and in person, and digging into some too-long-neglected corners of our home…

I don’t have a lot to say, really, except that I’m simmering like a rich stew, and I know that something wonderful is about to bubble up.

That said, let’s get to the update, so I can get back to the simmering!

Have you ever felt this way – like you were just waiting for whatever’s inside to break the surface?

“Do Me a Favor”: #Loveuary Day Seven

Ritu from But I Smile Anyway created the #Loveuary blog hop,  which feels like a perfect time to explore the next three chapters of my Star Trek: Enterprise  TnT fan fiction  story, Love and Loss – a hundred words at a time.

I’m using word prompts for each day, randomly gathered. If you’d like to add to the pool, list your choices in the comments – bonus points if they don’t sound especially like they’d fit a science fiction story. I love a challenge!

Prompt words appear in bold, and today’s contributors are credited at the end of the post.

One more thing: Standard disclaimer applies. I don’t own these characters or the world they inhabit. They just like whispering and shouting stories into my brain, which I share with you freely, as an act of love.

“Do Me a Favor”

“Do me a favor, Trav – pass me that box with the rainbows on it.” Hoshi’s surrounded by mounds of clothing and tangled accessories.

Travis starts for the shelf she’s pointing at, but stops to pick up an extremely skimpy lace something. “What’s this?”

She laughs. “Certainly not the most comfortable-fitting bra I’ve ever owned, but it has its charms.” She comes close, like she’s going to kiss him. She snags her lingerie from him, and ducks away. “The box?”

He gets it – it’s heavy. Things thud inside it. “What’s in here?”

Hoshi grins. “Illicit love tokens from many polyamorous paramours.

So what’s really in Hoshi’s rainbow box?
