“If You’re Too Tired”: Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles Volume 1) for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

I’m not as early as I was last week (when I actually ended up being late; it’s complicated), but I’m much more relaxed this Tuesday night. Last week, you see, I still had lots of things left to do…the Victorian Street Walk, Hamilton’s Albany and dinner with my boy, coat shopping and lunch with my girl. I still had a meditation workshop and a write-in to attend.

Yep – last week was busy in all kinds of ways. This week – calm. It’s not like there’s nothing going on; I’m working on homeschool quarterly reports, wrapping up another Kifo Island novel draft (The Far Shore, to be exact), revisions, and The Rest of Life…

So, here I am, on a Tuesday night, setting up tomorrow’s blogposts, and working on a couple of other things. Except that now, somehow, once again, it’s Wednesday afternoon, heading for evening, and here I am, still getting through today’s three slated blog posts…and now, just like that, it’s after dark. One of the posts is up, the second is in the finishing stage, and this one…well, it’s moving along.

Will I get it done by midnight? Stick around and see! =D

We’re back to Ava Garcia  in Sea Changes.

Ava grew on me during the writing of her story. She was a constant revelation. Her struggle is compelling. For me, it goes beyond the issue of whether people should be allowed to choose the manner of their death. She encapsulates my personal attitudes about how children deserve to be treated. It’s an honor to share her voice with you!

The Premise:

In advocating for a dying girl seeking emancipation from controlling parents, can an overburdened young woman and a lonely young man find a future together?

Note:

This passage has been rough-edited (trust me, you don’t want to see the muddled-beyond-hope original version! My plan is to begin creating a more structured revision plan once the 24 scenes pass through my local crit group (which isn’t happening, at the moment. Post NaNo, I expect to pick up steam for the next few months).

Your input is gratefully accepted, and might go a long way toward making this a better novel!

Context:

Donovan is helping Ava in the aftermath of a nosebleed.

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is December 7, 2016

  • I‘ve got 7 short paragraphs today one for each day in the date.

“If You’re Too Tired”

“Bleeding’s slowed down a lot, now.”

“They usually don’t last too long -” Ava didn’t add, ‘yet’, because she didn’t want to think about that now.

“But you’ll be even tireder, after.” He lifted the cloth slowly. “All done now. Would you like to try to sip a little cucumber water? I made up a fresh batch while you were napping.” He smiled, and lifted a water bottle with a straw, and she wet her lips and took a few drops onto her tongue, not daring more.

When she had enough, she started to lift her hand, and he gently took the bottle away. “You’ve been reading my records already.”

Donovan smiled at her. “I told you I would. I want to be the best help to you that I can be, Ava-”

The computer at her elbow signaled an incoming call.

“I can get that, if you’re too tired.”

Will Ava take Donovan up on his offer?

Who’s calling?

Is it someone Ava will want to talk to?

What’s next?

Next week, we’ll learn a little more.

  1. It’s wonderful when a character comes to life like that. 🙂 This is a great excerpt – its awesome that you can say so much with so few words.

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
