Progress Toward the Purpose: August 2016 Final Update

Hey there, ROWers and others!

Lately, I’ve been starting out with a bit of what I’m writing:

From A Mutually Acceptable Emotional Language”, a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction story WIP (Standard disclaimer applies – no infringement intended; no money made!):

  • And then the two men clearly reached an impasse of communication, very much in the nature of the miscommunications that had defined her earliest conversations with Trip.

She understood the humor with a suddenness that sparked an involuntary reaction she had never before experienced..

What’s tickling T’Pol’s metaphorical funny bone? What’s her involuntary reaction? What’s next?

That information is classified. Besides, it’s…
Time for a final ROW80 August Update!

  • Kifo Island Chronicles: Complete draft of The Far Shore. Scene 8/24 wrapping up; 21,533 /`65,000 words. Not so many, but I think I’ve needed to ease back into reconnection with this one, so I’m OK with taking my time.
  • The IDIC Romance: Finish the Word-High July stories for “Mutually Acceptable”.  30/31 in progress. 151 new words. Almost finished story 30. Soooo close. And so much fun. Not making the goal is also a bit deceptive; I didn’t get all the stories written largely because I ended up expanding to a much more textured and complex telling, including subplots, so that this becomes a bridge between several other points in the epic overarching arc I have for these two. It’s coming to me in a state of gloriously lovely chaos, so I went with this segment because it was “hot.” All together, I wrote tens of thousands of new words, and think I’m maybe a few thousand words from my predesignated stopping-for-now point: when I get through all 30 Filipino words.

  • The IDIC Romance: Reread existing stories at; create rough sketches for 30 new September stories/chapters/scenes. Additional goal: Read unpublished portions of Love and Loss”, “A Backdrop of Stars”, and all of “Mutually Acceptable Emotional Language”. Adapted goal: Sketch stories for IDIC./Hamilton September stories. Sketch paragraphs; 8/31 stories complete. I did a great job, considering that I was off to a late start on this one!

  • Kifo Island Chonicles: Plan and plot Tsunamis, using The Writer’s Coloring Book.  Crickets sound pretty, don’t they?

  • Monday Morning Coffee Sequel”: Reread “MMC”, Plan this short story/novella, using The Writer’s Coloring Book. Complete basic character mapping and associated story planning through story world mandalas for both major characters. The peepers harmonize well with the crickets.

  • Dark and Bitter”: Check guidelines; Plan this short story/novella, using The Writer’s Coloring Book and raw source material from my pre-existing nascent story, “The Venom Club.”Complete basic character mapping and associated story planning through story world mandalas for both major characters. Shhhh….listen to the pretty music….

  • Kifo Island Chronicles: Rough revise and submit a scene from Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles #1) to crit group weekly. I’m into scene 5/24; I got two submitted for August; but, with major rewrites involved, I’m satisfied. I’ve definitely gotten more efficient, and maybe a little faster, but definitely better.

  • Peach Liqueur Love”: Complete Steps 2 and 3 of Sarah Selecky’s Deep Revision process. No. But I’m getting ready, and this is about to take off in a new direction. Stay tuned.

  • The IDIC Romance: ReviseFirst Contact, With Jazz”, using The Writer’s Coloring Book and submit to patiently waiting betas. Did a bit of organizing and considering of crit group’s comments. This is another one that may take off suddenly and move forward quickly.

Social Media:

  • Blog/Website Transition: Adapt and keep to regular posting schedule. Answer comments, and return visits at least twice weekly. Share all new posts to website; learn how to use galleries. Add relevant content to pages. Aim for soft reveal at end of September. Still taking shape. It’s been an extremely busy and transformative summer; keeping up as well as I’d like has allowed me time to take it all in, roll with it, and Learn Things. I’m not quite sure where the website is going, but the sense of its shape is getting a bit clearer.
  • ROW80: Keep updates and sponsor duties up-to-date. I did well here.
  • Develop a rough, rational rhythm for visiting blogs and hop participants. Doing better with getting there within a few days. Room for improvement, but calling this a win.
  • Maintain email Inbox below 123 messages. Lost track a time of two during the month, but overall pleased at the way I’ve done this.
  • Answer comments twice weekly. Once. There weren’t many; as I haven’t stirred the pot for couple of months.

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all overdue and pending paperwork, testing, etc, and submit overdue materials. Draft, revise, and submit 2016-2017 IHIPs by August 5. Still have the final set of quarterly reports and final review/standardized test results to submit by September 15, but all past due materials are submitted, and we’re back in good standing with the district’s new superintendent. The IHIPs have already been approved for the 2016-2017 school year; the earliest ever! =D

  • Yard Beautification: Maintain in an increasingly presentable manner; declutter outgrown kid-things and random life debris. A little; not much.
  • Move everything out of Dropbox; cancel subscription. Done. Not missed.

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Birthday and event planning. Printed my For the Love of Spock ticket; Minecraft Club with my daughter.

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Lots of things. Big success.

  • NNWM local group: Interact regularly, in person and online; participate actively in critique group, reviewing, and beta reading. Some of all except the canceled beta project; calling this a solid success.

  • Complete Amazon reviews of Starfane; Dragon Time; “The Swineherdess”; and Duchess and the Damned. Starfane: done. Dragon: reread with WordRunner. Progress was made; I’m pleased, and have a better system to use, going forward.

  • Stained by Ashes: finish beta reading; 3 chapters per week until done. I was behind at the beginning of the month, but rallied and finished ahead of schedule.

  • Smart Change: Make list of first steps. This means reviewing the first few chapters, gathering needed materials, and doing relevant exercises. May be a Pacemaker goal. Crickets are back.
  • Write in Abundance and #onegoodcup journals, and meditate for at least five minutes five times each week. Both less consistent than I prefer in this unsettled time.

  • Get a cumulative total of at least 45 minutes moderate physical activity 5 days weekly, 60 minutes thrice weekly, and more strenuous activities for at least an hour five times monthly. 2/5 moderate (45 minutes.) Again, some, but not as much as I want.

Leaps of Faith:

  • The IDIC Romance: Finish revisions for “Love and Loss” chapters 1-20 at Revise new sections of “A Backdrop of Stars”, Chapters 4-8, and post. LAL: Scene 4/20 in progress. ABOS: Rough Drafts of Chapters Four and Five located and reread. Nothing beyond that.

  • A Splash of Red”; compile notes and do pre-self-publication revision pass. Gather materials and play with cover art ideas. Nope.
  • Poetry Chapbooks: Do rough setup for Trek poetry chapbook. This is experimental noodling for something I want to complete in 2017. Found the Poetry folder, and one of the poems running feral in another directory; rehomed both. It’s, ummm, a beginning…?

  • Complete resets/reorganizations in study and family room. Sporadically. Not much.

  • Update my Accomplice’s cover letter and resume. Help him in his online job search. A success.

  • New Goal: Submit a second ROW80 inspirational post by August 20, to give Kait a hand. Success.

The Writing Challenge That Knows You Have a Life!

I am myself. I own my life, and live with three other people who own theirs. My intention is to do only those things that bring me joy, and to give myself wholly to those things I do. Writing has been my passion throughout my life, and this will become the home for my writing life...because it brings me great joy!

  1. Hi – long time no see – and I agree with Erin, looks like august was a good month. 🙂 love the blue beard too – ha! and thanks for the Hamilton song – it was enjoyable .

    1. Hi there yourself, prior!

I adore the blue beard, and the man who wears it so well!

I would have liked to have done more, but I generally wish I could. After four months of intense writing challenges, and a small mountain of homeschooling paperwork, I needed a mellower month. Now I’m at the beginning of three more intensive months, but I feel recharged and more ready to go.

I am in love with Hamilton. There will be more songs. =D “Farmer Refuted” is a good one. I started reading the pamphlet of the same name written by a very young Alexander -it’s clear he’s utterly trouncing his opponent! =D

      1. Oh Hamilton is good – thanks for introducing it to me!
And your writing pacing sounds good – be back to visit some more later and hope your weekend is going well 🌺🌺🌺🌺

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
