Well, here we are – it’s September. In just a few hours, I’ll be the mother of a fifteen year old. I can’t decide whether it’s taken forever, or just the blink of an eye, for that ten-pound-plus newborn to become a young man a full head taller than me.
What is Story a Day? Well, Julie lays it all out at the site, but I’ll let her give you a summary here, too:
A month-long short-story challenge in which writers write (finish) a short story every day In May.
(And sometimes again in September.)
StoryADay.org is the online hub for writers taking part in the challenge: part blog, part writers’ community, all designed to help you write everyday, not “some day”.
So that’s the challenge. A Story a Day, every day, all month long. I’ll be using the prompts, and a paragraph of preliminary plot sketching, which I’ll develop on the spot for each day’s story. I don’t want too much planning, here – I love spontaneity and the things that happen when I give myself plenty of room to play.
Oh, yes, I am going to play! The Vulcan scientist in my head, and the brave human engineer who loves her, have stories to tell, and they refuse to keep quiet about them. So I will be writing Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction, because Trip and T’Pol say so, and because it’s just plain fun, even when T’Pol seems to be making Trip sick…
Writing fan fiction means that I need to take care of a bit of business….so here’s the Standard Disclaimer:
I don’t own Star Trek (though a case could be made for it owning me!) It can get a little dizzying figuring out who does, these days, but CBS has something to do with it, even if they’re mostly ignoring my beloved Enterprise NX-01. In writing these stories, I intend no copyright infringement, and make no monetary profit. I write these stories as a tribute, because T’Pol and Trip are alive and very real in my mind. T’Pol has been known to wake me up to share her grief with me. Trip loves to share what he learns about a certain pointy-eared lady’s playful and passionate sides.
Their show ended after four years, in a way that may go down as one of the worst series finales in history (for so many reasons, which I’m not going to get into here). But there are still stories to tell; the Enterprise fandom is active and thriving.
Most of my stories this month will be their stories – continuations of stories you can find by clicking the button above, or these links (most of these also started as Story a Day projects.) They’re rated for adult audiences, but none are contain graphic sexuality; I’d just rather play it safe.:
There’s also a new passion in my life, and, thanks to a certain twelve year old girl who lives in my house and owns a huge chunk of my heart, that passion is going to get a few stories, too.
My Hamilton-themed stories will be my first foray into alternative history spurred by a daughter who wanted Philip Hamilton and Theodosia Burr to have a relationship, even though in actuality, Theo married in February 1801, and Philip died in a duel in November of the same year.
The inspiration for these stories, of course, is the amazing Hamilton: An American Musical. If there’s anything to spur me to give myself passionately to my writing, it’s falling in love with another writer’s creative brainchild – and I am deeply besotted by what Lin-Manuel Miranda gave breathtakingly vibrant life. Seriously, if you haven’t heard it, give the video a watch – I’ll be swooning over here while you do that. =)
Again, I mean no disrespect at all to Lin-Manuel and those who helped him bring history to life. I won’t be focused on the events covered in the musical – this is a what-if story. I’ve been doing my own historical research, and I’ll base my fiction on that, and use the Original Broadway Recording (it’s explicit in places; be warned!) https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Original-Broadway-Recording-Explicit/dp/B013JLBPGE as my inspiration rather than the root of the story.
All that said, it’s time to share my first complete story from this brand new website. I’m still figuring out how I’ll present the stories as we go along…I’ve got a lot to learn about what I can do here, and I’m going to use this opportunity to figure some things out. It might get a little untidy…but then, there’s a reason this site is called Lovely Chaos! =D
Okay. That’s the business of the day….so off we go!
