Focused Elsewhere: July Goals Final Update

Another July is in the books.

And I survived my most emotionally turbulent month, even with added tumult. I’d love to say that I rocked my goals, hit all the marks I set for myself – but that would be a lie. I survived. I didn’t post most of the Word-High July stories I wrote – I ran out of time and focus. I dropped my word-count goal for CampNaNo, and barely managed the revised number, mostly with fan fiction. I forgot Pacemaker existed. I set aside The Far Shore, the Kifo Island novel I planned to finish in July, because it has a subplot I couldn’t handle emotionally. I stopped planning Tsunamis, the one I planned to start by the end of the month, because….there wasn’t enough me to go around.

I kind of felt like this:

But I survived. I wrote some. I moved forward.

And I was with my family through birthdays and death anniversaries and actual camping trips…and, in the end, family is the one thing that holds me together when life seems determined to make me come undone. After my birthday on the 29th, my focus started to clear, and I could see my way to August.

So, I didn’t get as far as I’d hoped – but I survived the month, and am ready to move on.

This post includes all of my July goals, and the progress I made. For my August, Round Three, and 2016 goals, check the links below!

Writing:

  • CampNaNoWriMo #1: Complete Draft The Far Shore (Kifo Island Chronicles #5). Current count: 20,452/~65,000 words. Scene 8/24 in progress. Set aside due to baby-in-jeopardy subplot.

  • CampNaNoWriMo #2: The IDIC Romance: Finish “Marriage of the Magi” (to the “Big Reveal”). Word-High July Challenge: Write 31 flash fiction stories using Filipino word prompts and my Mutually Acceptable Emotional Language theme (about 333 words each). Story 29/31 in progress; this evolved into something much longer and kind of wonderful!

  • CampNaNoWriMo #3: Draft Tsunamis (KIC #6) through Scene 12. Didn’t happen.

Plotting:

  • For July CampNaNoWriMo: Complete Planning/plotting for Tsunamis (Kifo Island Chronicles #6), using The Writer’s Coloring Book. It just kind of sat there staring at me….

Revisions:

  • Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles #1): Continue readthrough aloud (record and listen). Rough revisions through Scene 6/24, and submit to crit group. Completed and submitted through 2/24; 3/24 in progress; hard copy notations complete for these 11 pages. A glimmer of progress.

  • #WordHighJuly: Revise all 31 stories prior to posting. Story 7/31 in progress; it went from back burner to not on the radar.

Blogging/Social Media:

  • Answer blog comments and make visits, at least twice weekly. This was as turbulent as the month, once we hit the 13th.

  • Interact on Twitter at least once a day, four times each week. If you want to chat with me there; I’m @ShanJeniah. This was hit-or-miss, too.
  • ROW80: Revise, polish, and submit Round 3 Sponsor Post. Keep visits and updates current. Fell off during our camping week; otherwise on track with extra visits made, since Kait is short on sponsors this round.

  • Maintain email at below 123 messages; making good use of folders. Well…you know the drill by now, right?

  • FanFiction.net: Answer story comments weekly, as needed. Not so much. Not many comments, either, since I posted nothing new this month.

  • Share my 31 #WordHighJuly story posts. 5/31 posts shared. Couldn’t keep up, and decided to postpone them, maybe for September – or November, when I’ll be NaNoing, and blogging tends to be sparse.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork (quarterlies; attendance; EOY documentation prep.) End of Year test ordered and received: reviewed materials and procedures. Miah engaged in test prep: reviewing Khan Academy mathematics videos.. Narrative assessment complete. Drafted Annalise’s overdue second and third quarter reports. Began revising second quarter report. School district still behind on last year’s IHIP (determination was due 5/25; I’ll notify new superintendent because she may not know.) Definite movement here, and an explanation of where some of my energy went.
  • Continue decluttering/beautification projects; in home and/or yard, four days weekly. Continue making improvements to our home and our quality of life; remind/support the kids in the pitching-in they’ve agreed to do on my Accomplice’s days off. On again, off again….
  • Cancel Big Fish and Audible subscriptions. Big win here!

Lifetending:

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Yup.

  • NNWM local group: Participate in CampNaNo write-ins Tuesdays and Sundays. Most; not all.
  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. LOTS!
  • Catch up back entries with critique group. Didn’t happen.
  • Stained by Ashes: Critique two chapters each week; through Chapter Sixteen. This did, though! =)

Selftending:

  • Write in Abundance and #onegoodcup journals/and meditate five times each week. Better on journals than meditation.

  • Strenuous movement: At least an hour five times this month. Swimming, tai chi, yardtending, etc. Mostly during camping; it was a very hot July.

  • Moderate activity: At least 45 minutes, 5 times a week. Use my timer. Not as much as I wanted.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Website/blog interface: Begin linking feature posts to website; this month is for building a form for the foundation to come.

  • Finish the Kindness Challenge; check out Facebook page. I now know what I want to write about.

  • Oregon bound Burtons: Clean one common and one personal shelf, drawer, bin, or flat surface each week. Not so much.

  • Create Pacemaker plans for moving-parts or longer-term projects as need/interest indicate. Nope.

  1. Sometimes the presence of turbulence gives us a chance to see things that we normally wouldn’t see because they’d gotten buried beneath the surface. Sounds like you made some solid discoveries this past month….

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
