“Most of Your Clients”: Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles Volume 1) for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

Happy Wednesday once again!

April is here, and I’m juggling! The kids and I are leaving for a weekend with out-of-state friends in about 14 hours – and I’ve got maybe three days worth of stuff I’d like to do in that time.

Fortunately, I’m about packed, with only one load of laundry to wash (that’s up next), and my Boyo volunteered to clean, Shop-Vac, and Armor-All our elderly Outback, so that’s one more thing done, and better than I would have done it.

I’ve set my April novel project, A Rising Tide (Kifo Island Chronicles #4) aside for today, because I’ve got lots of blogging I want to get done, and word counts can more easily be made up next week, if they falter in the next few days. More on that blogging, after this post.

All that to say that, while I hope to get to everyone tonight, if that doesn’t happen, I might need the weekend, but since I have no A-Z post or minioning to do on Sunday, I’ll pop round here.

But none of that’s really what we’re here for today, which is another snippet from Donovan Nash’s opening scene in Sea Changes.

Donovan is one of my favorite Kifo Island characters. He had a major supporting role in both of my previously drafted Kifo stories. Now, he gets his own (well, shared with Karina and Ava, but still, he’s finally the star he was always meant to be!)

For those who’ve forgotten, or are new to this story, here’s the premise:

In advocating for a dying girl seeking emancipation from controlling parents, can an overburdened young woman and a lonely young man find a future together?

Note:

This passage is NaNo rough. My plan is to begin creating a revision plan within the next few months. That said, any input is gratefully accepted!

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is April 6, 2016
  • I‘ve got ten sentences today; I added the day and date.

Context: Donovan has just met Ava Garcia – a small and as-yet indistinct form in a darkened room. She’s recognized that he’s albino, and he’s discovered that she’s a child. Now, we get to know Ava a little better

“Most of Your Clients”

“I’ll admit that I’m a little fascinated by you, as well, Ava. And I like honesty.” It was refreshing to remove his hat, and, for the second time today, his glasses. He could feel her study, even before his eyes adjusted to the brightness.

“I can make it darker in here, if you need.”

“No – I only need a moment; it’s fine.” Donovan blinked a few times, then, gradually, opened his eyes all the way. “So, how may I help you?”

“Well, first, I suppose we should clear the air. I appreciate that you haven’t mentioned it, but I’m guessing I’m probably a lot younger than most of your clients.”

How will Ava clear the air?

Why is Donovan here?

Will he be able to work with Ava?

What’s next?

Some of these questions may be answered – and others will certainly be posed- next week, so be sure to come back then to learn more of Donovan’s story.

And now, about those blogs…I have NEWS!

I know some of you love my Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction. This month, for the Blogging From A to Z April Challenge, I’m giving in to T’Pol and Trip who are demanding I give them some much-needed attention. You can read them here:

Or, if those aren’t enough, you can visit my brand-new fanfiction.net account, and find extended versions of each story. Yup! After years of dreaming about sharing my passion, and many years more than that of hiding it shame-facedly, my Trek stories are making their way out there in the big wide world! =)

Want more WIPpets? You can find them, and even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined, by following the little blue froggy from WIPpet to WIPpet to WIPpet!

Because how could I NOT want to play with these two?!
