My Staycation Present: February 21, 2016

Hello from our personal resort (OK, it’s really my bedroom, since my Accomplice and son are watching Hellboy in the living room, and that’s not my kind of movie. My study is also out, because I’m close to having everything moved that I need to, and it’s too piled up right now for me to feel comfortable in. I’ve always been the type who enjoys working from my bed, so that’s where I am, today.

Yesterday, we celebrated my Accomplice’s birthday – and the nineteenth anniversary of our meeting – by – well, living. No real fuss, just a day where we all came and went and did things at our own paces and for our own reasons. As I’ve been decluttering and organizing my study and various common spaces, he’s been doing similar things in the garage. We don’t have an attic or a basement, so, since we’ve lived here, things we weren’t quite sure what to do with landed there, and it got pretty scary and really not usable for anything except shoving more things into.

Right now, lots of things are in that in-between place that has to come for progress to happen. I’m a little unsettled, which is reflected in this update, but it’s for a good purpose.

That said, I could use some ideas to get through this muddled time calmly. When you deep clean or renovate, how do you cope with the resultant chaos?  Any little secrets to share?

Writing:

  • Foul Deeds Will Rise: Trueborn Weft Series #2: Complete through Scene 38. Scene 34/50 in progress.

Plotting:

  • The IDIC Romance: Complete plot/pinch points for 25 stories. 6/25complete. (F). Goal addition: Once I get through Week Two plotting (I), draft Theme Reveal and Post Template.

  • Decide on, plan, and plot April CampNaNo novel. Planning has commenced; supplies ordered and arriving piecemeal from Amazon.

Revisions:

  • The IDIC Romance: Reread “Slow Jazz Awakening” hard copy and notate; adapt revision plan as needed; write revised draft – 16 short scenes. Draft 2.5 rewrite; Scene 12/16 complete; Scene 13-16 in early progress.

Blogging/Social Media:

  • Revise, post, and initiate new blogging schedule; keep all posts current. All posts on time. Nearly prepared to announce new schedule.

  • Answer blog comments and make visits, at least thrice weekly. I may not get to them all; but I will get to some. 3/3.

  • ROW80: Keep visits and updates current; draft, revise, and submit Round One Sponsor Post before January 10.

  • Change one thing weekly in my blog layout. I kept meaning to get to this, and then I didn’t.

  • Maintain email inboxat under 99 messages; clear Archives folder. Inbox cleared; Archives weeded to 0 messages! Adapted goal: Clear out Inbox and Archive twice weekly; Weed through Transactions in Progress, keeping only currently useful items.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork. Draft IHIPs and attend to district’s Peer Review issue;create 2015-2016 Flickr portfolios for both kids, and begin adding to them. Sciences section complete; Social Studies: Patriotism and Citizenship; U.S. History; and U.S. Government; and Economics.
  • Continue decluttering/beautification projects; in home and/or yard, five days weekly. Continue making improvements to our home and our quality of life. General maintenance; organization; decluttering. 6/5.
  • Go through all online subscriptions; cancel those we no longer need; at least one each week. I’ve sorted a lot into my Transactions in Progress file for near-future review.

Lifetending:

  • Continue planning/ attending outings (personal and family) as desired. Plans firming up to visit NJ friends in April; some local outings in the works for next week.

  • NNWM local group: Attend write-ins regularly, and check in on the Facebook group as inspired. Read and critique both projects I’ve been hanging onto; submit and critique weekly for our small crit group. Completed readthrough of first project; letting simmer. Located second piece.
  • Complete Stained Snow beta read.

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Time with all. Yup! Pretty easy on a vacation week! =D
  • Complete 6 pending book reviews.

Selftending:

  • Write in Abundance, Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Meditate seven times weekly, including one eating meditation. Explore one new meditative practice. Journaling 7/7; meditation: 8/7.

  • Tai chi practice: One class and one at-home practice each week. Class on Thursday, and got my instructor’s input on searching for a good 24 form video to follow on my own.

  • Focus on sprints of activity daily (hometending, dancing, tai chi, walking, whatever), and more strenuous activities I enjoy, like swimming and hiking twice monthly. Write twice-monthly health-centered blog posts. Good on the daily moving sprints: walks and hometending. Strenuous activity: 5/2 (tai chi; moving firewood; walk with Annalise) . 2/2 health blogposts.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Fan fiction stuff: Polish “Mission: Accomplished”, and “Scavenger Hunt”, and offer at Triaxian Silk and/or FanFiction.net.

  • Read through The Writer’s Coloring Book by Rachel Funk Heller in preparation for using it to plot and draft my April CampNaNo Kifo Island project.

  • New goal: Purchase all needed supplies before I finish this month’s Foul Deeds Will Rise chapters, so that I can begin planning as soon as I finish. Order placed; items beginning to arrive.

  • Begin exploring FanFiction.net for possible submissions there. Did some Enterprise fan fiction reading. Some not great, some adequate, and at least one stunner! Hey, #itswritingresearch! =D

  1. So much beautiful blue! You inspire me so I’ll go back to using color for my next check-in. Will you post more (someday) about that planning process you use for those 26 stories? All that blue suggests you are maintaining a sense of balance through the decluttering/organizing phase. A trick I use is to set aside a bag or box for items that can be donated. When the box is full, off it goes to the Goodwill, giving me a sense of gradual progress and reinforcing recycle, reuse, repurpose. Hope your week is going very well . . . and happy birthdays/holidays to all.

    1. I love blue, so it’s exciting seeing it. I also have a thing about crossing stuff off lists, so I get to indulge that impulse, too. =D

Since you asked, I will write about my planning process – not tonight, but soonish. Basically, though, it’s a blend of Rock Your Plot and freewriting.

I’m not as much a balance person as a blend one – the blend has shifted day to day, but I’m seeing progress in many areas, and a few things are wrapping up. I use that same bag or box method. Every little thing we clear out is a lightening. We had so many recyclables the last two weeks that my Accomplice refilled the bin after it was emptied, and put it on the other side of the road to be emptied again…and we still have piles. But we have a plan, and we don’t mind baby stepping our way there.

It’s been a nice week. Lise and I went to the state museum to meet up with friends, and she left with them for a sleepover. It’s quiet here, tonight, because she’s definitely a presence! Tomorrow may or may not include tai chi, because I’m nocturnal and sore, and we have a girl to pick up at some point…

Thank you for your well wishes!

  2. Looks like you’re doing well even among the chaos.
When we do any deep cleaning/major reorganizing, it’s usually because my husband is fed up with the way things are. He gets stressed. I get stressed because he is. We snap until everything’s sorted and things are back to normal. Probably why doesn’t happen very often.

    1. Here, I’m the one who tends to get frustrated first. I need to see a level of underlying order under the clutter; no one else in the family needs that even remotely as much as I do.

I used to snap, but, after a lot of hard work, I’ve been able to approach things far more calmly and effectively. Jim will sometimes decide to deep clean something, and spend the day on it, whereas I tend to move in spurts, and get overwhelmed easily. Good thing I like having lots of projects going.

  3. You’re doing so well considering how many goals you have! 🙂 When it comes to staying calm during huge reshufflings, I usually listen to some classical music, turned up really high. So maybe listen to some music that you find relaxing while you work? 🙂

  4. Sounds like you are having a wonderful time! I’ve always loved staycations. As for dealing with chaos…I tend to take things one step at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

    Nice work on your goals!

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
