Stealing Glances: Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles Volume 1) for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. We’re led by the capable fingers and nimble mind of Emily Witt.

Merry Christmas, if that’s your thing. If not, please accept my warm wishes for a peaceful week, instead!

I seem to be on a visit other WIPpeteers every other week cycle. I’m not sure what happened, exactly, except the combination of the upcoming holiday, a drive to catch up with a great many projects set aside for the six months when I was using an ancient laptop that couldn’t handle a heavy workout. And there was family time….

I’m getting to all my fellow WIPpeteers this week, though!

And now, on to the WIPpet!

I’m serializing the first scene of Sea Changes, a Kifo Island Chronicles novel, where we meet our first of three POV characters, Karina Karanova. Here’s the premise:

In advocating for a dying girl seeking emancipation from controlling parents, can an overburdened young woman and a lonely young man find a future together?

Note:

This passage is NaNo rough, except for a change or two to avoid spoilers. My plan is to let this draft rest for December, and begin creating a revision plan in January. That said, any input is gratefully accepted!

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is December 23, 2015.
  • Today, you get five paragraphs, because I added the digits of the date.

Context: Karina is in a pottery studio, working with clay and hating it. The shop owner has asked to draw the blinds out of courtesy to an expected guest…

Stealing Glances:

She focused her mind on that – or tried to. Even though she kept having little flashes of wonder at what manner of person didn’t like bright light, but chose to live on a tropical island. Or was it a guest, one of the dying?

No. That was no concern of hers whatever, and, if she kept on imagining creatures out of Yuri’s comic books, she was going to douse herself with a cold shower, once Mother was asleep for the night, and she was done with this damned clay –

Not dammed clay. She wouldn’t think of it that way. Better to see it as the dying request of a woman who wished to have her ashes held in this specific way– a final embrace.

The little bells over the door tinkled as it opened, and, despite herself, Karina looked up to see who the darkness-loving newcomer was –

And almost immediately put her attention back on the work. It didn’t have nearly as much to do with duty, now, as it did a fear of staring at the newcomer. But she still couldn’t keep herself from stealing a few glances, from under her bangs.

Who were the blinds drawn for?

Why is Karina stealing glances?

Will she finish her mother’s project in time?

Will the new arrival notice her interest?

Some of these questions may be answered – and others will certainly be posed- next week, so be sure to come back then to learn more about Karina and her story.

Previous Karina WIPpets (chronologically):

The last serialized snippet of my Trip and T’Pol story, “Mission Accomplished”, is at #8sunday,  this week. Here’s the final snippet, Somewhat Premature, which goes live just after midnight on Sunday . There’s also a list so you can catch up with all the previous posts.

And because it’s a season of giving, one more treat:

Next April, I’ ll be Blogging From A-Z. I’ll be writing – wait for it! – Enterprise fan fiction stories. =D (I know; you’re all shocked, right?!) During my brainstorming, I wrote flash bits of stories that didn’t make my final cut. They’re rough and tumble, and I’m posting them daily, in canon-chronological progression. For each comment, I add a paragraph to the story (there’s a two-day delay, to allow comments to gather) –

the fun part is that I have no idea what direction these little guys will go…

Look for them here: The IDIC Romance Advent Calendar.

Want more WIPpets? You can find them, and even add your own date-related excerpt if you’re so inclined, by following the little blue froggy from WIPpet to WIPpet to WIPpet!

Because Karina seems to want subdued music, and because this is just about my favorite Christmas carol of all time…

Author:

I am myself. I own my life, and live with three other people who own theirs. My intention is to do only those things that bring me joy, and to give myself wholly to those things I do. Writing has been my passion throughout my life, and this will become the home for my writing life...because it brings me great joy!
