Never and Always, Part Two: The IDIC Romance Advent Calendar

Advent header new

Happy December, everyone! May it be filled with love, laughter, sharing, and so much joy that it flows out from you and embraces others.

To help with that, I’ve created a special Advent calendar. It’s as non-denominational and doesn’t stop on December 25 – and it espouses the concept of IDIC – Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.

Each day I post a flash fan fiction story. These are freewritings – rough and imperfect; I only correct for spelling and grammar. Read one, read some, read them all – suit yourself!

A note: Today’s story is especially long, so I’m telling it in two posts. Need to go back to Part One?

And stay tuned after today’s story for two more paragraphs of , courtesy of our supernova commenters, Erin Zarro and Fallon Brown.

Enterprise Advent 23

OK, briefing time:

  • Spoiler zone ahead! Don’t read these posts if you don’t want series spoilers, or even spoilers for other parts of The IDIC Romance, because things will be revealed, and I don’t like spoiling…I’d much rather delight.

  • The base art for the calendar elements of this post was created by Annalise S. Burton, and is used with permission and compensation.

  • I don’t own Trip, T’Pol, or the franchise that conceived them. These stories are offered as a gift, without expectation for any compensation. Of course, comments, rhapsodizing ramblings, and honest feedback of all kinds are always welcome!

And now, to the calendar…..we lift the tab… and find…Trip, holding an engagement ring, and waiting for T’Pol to tell him what it means to be the bondmate of a Vulcan woman.

Advent Never

“According to the Kir’Shara, when a telerotic bond is formed, it precludes the formation of other romantic attachments – for the duration of the bondmates’ mutual lifespans. When I – bound you to me, I forced faithfulness upon you, when you might have desired Corporal Cole, or another mate.”

“There was a hell of a lot more interest on Amanda’s side than mine,” Trip said, brushing his fingers over the backs of hers. “I guess – well, I guess I was just feeling like we were getting to be such good friends, and that I was misreading you. She wanted me, and it felt good to be wanted.”

“You were wanted, Trip.”

Yeah, I kinda figured that one out when you seduced me – and don’t say you didn’t, because, if I ever tell this story to anyone else, that’s how I’m putting it. Can I slip this ring onto your lovely finger now, or is there more?”

There is more. You didn’t comment on the fact that this is likely a permanent bond which can’t be severed without significant danger on both sides.”

“Like the way we both felt when I went to Columbia?

“Or perhaps far worse.”

“For better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as we both shall live.” He smiled. “If I remember it right, that’s how we put it, and that’s what I mean by giving you this ring, T’Pol. Forever in your head, with you in mine, suits me just fine. Now can I – ”

“If Vulcan’s laws were still governed by the Kir’Shara, Trip, you could have done so on the night we first mated, and formed the bond. In ancient law, and perhaps again, what we have forged between us constitutes a marriage. Nothing other was needed, but that the bond exist, and be accepted by both.”

For three breaths, he only stared at her, the way she had done, when he said he had already requested a transfer back to Enterprise. “You’re telling me that we’ve been married for over a year? That we were actually married when they coerced you into that sham with Koss? That we weren’t actually cheating when we -”

“In a manner of speaking, that’s all true, according to the words of Surak.”

Another pause. Then, Trip threw back his head and laughed – laughed until he began crying again, and now T’Pol understood what once would have seemed highly illogical. One powerful emotion touched and blended with others, so that he could grieve their dead child, and, at the same time, celebrate what they had created and would create, and the irony of this situation and this bond neither of them had expected, any more than they had expected to discover Elizabeth, or Lorian.

When he found enough calm to wipe the tears, he placed the ring on her finger. It was cool, a tiny weight, and they admired it together as their hands moved through the ritual poses of ouz’hesta, deepening their joining.

“By the powers vested in me by being T’Pol’s bondmate, I pronounce us husband and wife,” he whispered, and then kissed her.

Will there really be a wedding?

When and where?

Vulcan or Terran?

What’s next?

Remember, this is Part Two – find Part One, here.

If you’d like to know more about what led to this proposal, you can watch the Season Four episodes “Demons” and “Terra Prime” to learn more.

And now, another paragraph from Questions and Queries:

For context, Phlox is attempting to help Trip and T’Pol understand how certain differences in the way their brains function might be complicating their relationship with one another.

“You aren’t mistaken.” Phlox was smiling the disturbingly wide Denobulan smile. “That is indeed a neural network. It acts as a highly refined filter for the amygdala; only in the most dire of circumstances will the deepest survival instincts be triggered, in Vulcans.” Trip was nodding along as Phlox gestured to the pertinent area. “However, once the amygdala is engaged, it responds most powerfully, and takes considerably longer to cease its involuntary functioning.”

    1. Oops! I think I forgot to add the link.

The advent calendar idea kind of evolved from the fact that I had these extra story bits I won’t be using for the original project, and I wanted to share them.

Also, I’m a sucker for Trip, T’Pol, and Advent calendars…

I may do it again next year! =)

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
