Doubled-Up Growth: November 8, 2015

Do you NaNo?

No, I’m not going to try to talk you into or out of it – but it’s a meaningful question, in November.

I NaNoed for the first time way back in 2009. My kids were eight and five then, and my goal was to participate, and finish, if I could, without disrupting the rhythms and flows of our lives. I barely broke 50K, but I was a winner in many ways, even though it would be years before I had a completed draft of Blood and Breath – which will be nearly completely trashed, and eventually rewritten as two volumes of my Trueborn Weft series.

I’ve missed only one year since then, when I had no idea what to write. NaNo works for me -I plan my rough drafts around NaNo months, and I’ve gone from talking about finishing drafts to actually doing it – three times a year (actually, if all goes well this year, four).

Yesterday was #DoubleUpDay, the annual NaNoWriMo fundraising day, where donating and word counts go hand in hand. I was at 17, 325 words when the day began, and I ended with 29,989 words – not doubled, but tying my 13K best-ever day…and the characters are alive and revealing themselves in surprising ways…oh, and I got my halo.

What fires up your writing mojo? NaNo, or something completely different?

I intended to post up my final October progress report – but that might not happen.  Life goes on…

  • Second Serving Sunday: The NaNovember Edition (a recap/mashup, and peek ahead, for your reading pleasure!, and I’ll post the link when it’s complete).

Color-coding key:

  • Goal attained = blue with overstrike.

  • Goal in progress = green.

  • Goal-in-waiting = red.

Writing:

  • NaNoWriMo: Complete draft of Sea Changes (Kifo Island Chronicles #3).  This near-future fantasy will be about 60,000 words, total. I’m officially at 29, 989/50,000; a little above NaNo par for 11/17. 12/24 scenes completed; nearly halfway through the novel, in both scenes and word counts. I’m loving these characters and their intertwined stories, and #DoubleUpDay was very good to me – I tied my best-ever NaNo count.

Plotting:

  • The IDIC Romance: Choose one freewriting for each letter to develop into an A-Z post; make episode list for rewatching, and take notes as needed. Hey, #itswritingresearch! 1/31 stories chosen. 21/26 letters completed; 1 /2 V completed. This week: Complete drafting.

Blogging/Social Media:

  • Publish all regular features posts; scheduling ahead where possible. I’m doing better at combining posting and drafting, now that we’ve had a few days to settle back into our home lives. Still missed some posts, though.

  • Catch up all blog comments and visits. I’ve made a start here. I’ve still got a rather intimidating backlog, but I intend to stay current, and get to older comments in spare moments.

  • ROW80: Keep visits and updates current. All caught up after travel. Feels good!

  • Maintain below 333 messages. I’ve found a system. I can sort through mail quickly on my phone, while I watch TV, which I do three or four days a week. I keep my Kindle handy for reading things that trigger interest, and for an inbox count, which my phone app doesn’t show. I got to about 400 messages in my last viewing session.

Hometending:

  • Homeschool Administration: Complete all pending paperwork. Draft IHIPs and attend to district’s Peer Review issue. Collecting screenshots from The Boyo’s various online projects, in preparation for wrapping up the Peer Review issue.
  • Get computer repaired!
  • Continue decluttering/beautification projects; in home and/or yard, five days weekly. Continue making improvements to our home and our quality of life. Focus on maintenance and implementing ideas from 5,000 Words Per Hour.  7/5 hometending. Lise’s room; kitchen; family room; living room; study; our bedroom. Clearing the decks in preparation for using the book ongoing and progressing.

Lifetending:

  • Continue planning/ attending outings and events as desired. Intention for future travel; ideas in play, but nothing concrete at this point.

  • NNWM local group: Attend write-ins regularly, and check in on the Facebook and Twitter groups as inspired. Read and critique both projects I’ve been hanging onto. Doing a bit better overall; hoping to get to one of these critiques in the next couple of weeks.
  • Complete the two beta reads I’ve had waaay too long. Beta #2 complete through Chapter Four (p15/121).

  • My beloveds: One on one time with each, doing something of value to us both, each week. Oh, yes! Lots of connection, conversation. Walks and outside play. Reading bedtime stories. Couples’ time. Shared videos and meals.
  • Complete 7 pending book reviews.

Selftending:

  • Write in Abundance,Intentions, and #onegoodcup journals seven times each week. Meditate seven times weekly, including one eating meditation. Explore one new meditative practice. 7/7 for journaling and meditation.

  • T’ai chi practice: at home three times; class once or twice a week. Continue reading The Tai Chi Directory.

  • Make time for physical activity five days a week; use phone app to track three time a week. 6/5; 4/3 with phone.

Leaps of Faith:

  • Poetry Chapbooks:I did some very basic research on what chapbooks are; letting the concept simmer for a bit.

  • Website/Business blog: More informal brainstorming with my Accomplice.

  • Fantasy convention: As it turns out, it would have better to check this out prior to the weekend it’s being held. They’ve met their attendance cap, and prices are far too high for this to be a possibility for me this year.

  • Fan fiction stuff

  • Self-publishing

    1. Most of the energy has been going to hometending and the NaNoing, but I’m happy with where I am, especially considering interstate travel with kids and two colds in a week….

And productive starts are always yay-worthy! =)

  1. As usual, great energy and great progress! NaNoWriMo is also very helpful to me in generating ‘the rest of the story’ — though I don’t quite have the stamina to make those 1600 words EVERY day! I’m with you on cutting down the e-mails; my current inbox has 530. I’d much rather be at about 300 — or much less. And I am going to try using my Kindle or laptop (while watching football with DH) to cut into this. Great idea! About the poetry chapbook, why not self-publish through CreateSpace and Kindle? Ah, balance, balance. Make it a good week!

    1. I love NaNo for the structure, focus, and motivation it brings, as well as the community – the sense of others embarked on the same mission.

I came up with the phone/Kindle email combination by partial necessity. The elderly laptop I’m using until mine is repaired or replaced can only handle a few tabs open at a time, and it’s not fast. So it’s just not good for email, because I usually need the tabs for my blogging things.

The phone is very good for sorting, and skimming things I’m not sure about. The Kindle is much slower, but allows me to see the number of messages in my inbox, while the phone app only shows 20 at a time.

I actually got under 300 messages last night – of course, my ‘Leisure Time Reading’ file is stuffed to overflowing – but my inbox is much cleaner! =)

As for the chapbook, I think that’s my eventual plan. But first, I need to sort my stash of poems into categories, and learn a thing or two about revising poetry. I thought I might start with an online-only Enterprise fan chapbook, because that’s something I wouldn’t charge for, so I could use it as a learning and feedback experience. I might just post it to a fan fiction site, at least at first…

Still working out the details, but I want to make it a major focus of 2016, so this is a good time for brainstorming, research, and setup.

I’m more into blending than balance – which works better while I’m still in the thick of momdom. =)

I always love when you stop by, Beth! May you also create a wonderful week for yourself.

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
