Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys! She’s our fearless shepherd…or something like that, anyway…
How are you doing, this fine Wednesday? Actually, it’s not Wednesday yet; I’m typing this at 5am Tuesday morning. Why? Well, partly because it’s a full moon, and I’m nocturnal. Partly because my daughter has a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday, so I don’t want to be squeezed. On Thursday, the children and I are headed to New Jersey, so that they can spend Halloween with their best friends a state away.
So here I am early, hoping to get as much as I can scheduled for the next days and weeks – I’ll be driving us home on the first – of November, and of NaNo…
But enough about me…it’s WIPpet time!
I’m serializing my flash fiction story, “Scavenger Hunt” in its entirety. Since it hasn’t appeared anywhere else, and only the first few paragraphs have previously been shared here, you can feel free to consider this a WIPpet Wednesday exclusive.
I’m eager for comments, criticisms, and feedback. I’m edging closer and closer to biting the bullet, so to speak, and posting my first story to an actual fan fiction site, so input is extremely valuable, at this point.
Disclaimer: Trip, T’Pol, and Trek – it’s a love thing, not a money thing; I don’t own them, but they won’t let me go! =)
No spoilers in this one. I envision it taking place soon after my previous story, “Mission Accomplished”. In canon terms, that would be between S4E17: “Bound”, and S4E20: “Demons”. Enterprise is en route home to Earth, with no urgent business, and Captain Archer decides that he’ll put his second and third in command through some ‘team-building exercises’. He’s got no idea (or, at least, he’s trying to convince himself that he has no idea), that they’ve got other, more pleasurable ways of connecting and working together, and that these little side missions are getting in the way…
Never fear, though, because TnT have ways of tending to the business at hand without sacrificing all the pleasures of a relationship that’s finally going well…
Note: I’m not quite sure all I have them doing in this snippet would fit into two days – so the timeline may eventually change to reflect reality…or it could be that Trip’s not being entirely truthful here…
WIPpet Sorta- Math:
- Today is October 28, 2015.
- One sentence for each day in the date. You can call it a treat, if you’d like! =)
“Watch Movies, Eat Popcorn”
“Well – answering a Vulcan’s questions isn’t exactly easy.” Trip stared at the ceiling as though praying for strength.
“What does that mean?”
“It wasn’t enough to find ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer’ and get a clip of a chess game. We had to watch the movie, and then she needed to understand chess, which meant teaching her – and having my pride handed to me fifteen times in a row. Wasn’t enough to know who Shirley Temple was – we had to watch every single one of her movies, including the “Baby Burlesks”. I might never get those out of my head.”
“Human entertainments are baffling. However, Shirley Temple Black went on to have a significant career as a diplomat, so perhaps the early training was valuable to her, even if I find it incomprehensible.”
“And don’t tell me. You took a shuttlepod out covertly, and found yourselves a terrible storm – “
“I have experienced a wide variety of inclement weather, Captain, including the sandfires on my homeworld. However, I found the concept of ‘storm chasing’ worthy of further investigation.”
“See what I mean, Cap’n? If you’re going to assign us any more of these ‘team building’ exercises, you might want to consider that scavenger hunts and murder mysteries don’t exactly translate cross-culturally.”
“You weren’t complaining while we were watching the movies, Trip. Moreover, you consumed an alarming amount of popcorn, and little else.”
“It’s the rule. Watch movies, eat popcorn.” Trip winked at Jon. “Right, Cap’n?”
“I’m not sure you’ll find it written anywhere – “ He caught a glance between the other two, and put up a hand. “No, I don’t want you to do an exhaustive search to find out – that might take the two of you till we get back to Earth. Let me double-check the list: a black-and-white cat, a pot of gold, hair curlers, a terrible storm, a chess game, and…I don’t see a cow, Commanders. Don’t tell me you forgot.”
Did they forget the cow?
Are they being honest?
Will Trip explode from all that popcorn?
Will they research the Movie Popcorn rule?
Does Jon believe them?
Will there be consequences?
Well, if you want the answers to these questions, you’ll just have to come back next week!
In case you want to read back, here’s the WIPpets that have posted so far:
“This Isn’t a Game”: October 7, 2015
“A Lot of Questions”: October 14, 2015
Being Bamboozled: October 21, 2015
I’m also serializing the prequel to this story, “Mission Accomplished”, over at #8sunday. You can read the current snippet, This Damned Mystery, now, and the next segment goes live just after midnight on Sunday (as long as it get it scheduled before we head home, that is). There’s a list so you can catch up, if you’re coming in late.
