“How Do You Know?” for #OctPoWriMo Day 5

If you love to write poetry, you love a good poetry challenge, and you are missing April’s NaPoWriMo then you are in the right place. There are now multiple Novel writing months it is past time we added another Poetry month. October is a great time to challenge poets to a poem a day for thirty one days.

This October, I’m also focusing on gratitude, so each of my poems will use the daily prompt, and deal in some way with thankfulness. Come join me on this poetic journey – and feel free to comment, or link your own poems.

No, you didn’t read that wrong! This really is my OctPoWriMo poem for October 5 – nearly 2 weeks ago!

Life intervened, and it was a few days before I could settle in to write this, and, despite the fact that I’m getting back on track and catching up with the several poems I missed in the fray, I’m still considerably behind in actual postings. Thankfully, things have settled down, for the most part, and I’m beginning to regain my center and my footing.

And so, here I am, with a new poem for an old prompt. This one is a love poem, but the prompt, which included Taylor Swift lyrics, made me think instantly about Trip and T’Pol. I promise that that’s not a reflection on my own love life – I wrote “It Levels Off Up Ahead” for my Accomplice last OctPoWriMo, and it’s about as perfect a love poem as I can imagine.

Disclaimer: I don’t own them. I make no money from playing with them. It’s a love thing.

I wrote this one in free verse, going with the two lovers who were pretty clear on how things were for them, in this moment. I’m grateful that they’re a part of my life, and each other’s.

And now, a discussion of love, between someone who loves, and someone who claims not to know what love is….and yet…

How Do You Know?”

I love you, woman.”

His words drift like smoke

Through the air

And through your soul.

Fanned by your quieting breaths.

He says nothing else in words

And you cannot

Your language still lost to passion.

But his hands speak a language

Of their own

Traveling your body

Making another kind of love.

Your breaths commingle in

Candlelight and quiet.

When you can speak,

You ask only,

“How do you know?”

And you rise to lean

On one elbow, watching

His mobile face

As he chuckles.

Should’ve known

You’d be the kind

To need proof.”

You’ve learned him well

Well enough to know

That he’s not angry

But only amused.

I’m a scientist.”

You predicted his laughter

But not the kiss upon your nose.

I know because I do,” he says.

That response lacks clarity.”

You know where to touch him

Where he is ticklish.

I know I love you -”

He gasps and squirms.

“ – Because you fill me up

To overflowing

Because you challenge me

Confound me

Drive me up the bulkheads –

And because you look at me

This way when I say things like that.”

I don’t understand,” you tell him

But something within you does.

Knows his meaning resonates

With your own truth.

I think you understand

More than you’ll admit

And I know I love you

Because I understand why

That’s hard for you.”

You kiss his nose although

It’s purely illogical

Perhaps it’s not as difficult

As it once seemed.

I don’t understand love

Or things that aren’t

Quantifiable –

But I know the way

The light reflects in your eyes

The moment when you are inspired

The touch of your hands –

on your engines

Or upon me.

I know your scent

And the beat of your heart.

Your many kinds of laughter

Your sorrows and your joys

And the way you fit

Into my mind and my soul

Filling me to overflowing

With chaos and emotions

With challenge and frustrations

And with yourself.”

The light shifts in his eyes

Tears gather and begin to fall

As he kisses you long and slow.

Damn, woman I love you,’

His whisper a welcome warmth

That permeates all of you

It is illogical to wish that

I could say those words to you -”

Your protest smothered by his lips

His tears, his impossible grin

The tightness of his human embrace.

Oh, pepperpot,” he says

As you tangle together again.

You already have.”
