“This Isn’t a Game” : The IDIC Romance for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys! She’s our fearless shepherd…or something like that, anyway…

Story a Day September  is over now, but I still have lots of Trip and T’Pol shipping stories to share…and I’m going to do just that, for the next several weeks.

Beginning today, I’m sharing my flash fiction story, “Scavenger Hunt” in its entirety. Since it hasn’t appeared anywhere else, and only the first few paragraphs have previously been shared here, you can feel free to consider this a WIPpet Wednesday exclusive. You get to see it first – aren’t you the lucky ones?!

I’m eager for comments, criticisms, and feedback. I’m edging closer to biting the bullet, so to speak, and posting my first story to an actual fan fiction site, so input is extremely valuable at this point.

Disclaimer: Trip, T’Pol, and Trek – it’s a love thing, not a money thing; I don’t own them, but they won’t let me go! =)

No spoilers in this one. I envision it taking place soon after my previous story, “Mission Accomplished”. In canon terms, that would be between S4E17: “Bound”, and S4E20: “Demons”. Enterprise is en route home to Earth, with no urgent business, and Captain Archer decides that he’ll put his second and third in command through some ‘team-building exercises’. He’s got no idea (or, at least, he’s trying to convince himself that he has no idea), that they’ve got other, more intimate ways of connecting and working together, and that these little side missions are getting in the way…

Never fear, though, because TnT have ways of tending to the business at hand without sacrificing all the pleasures of a relationship that’s finally going well…

WIPpet Sorta- Math:

  • Today is October 7, 2015.
  • One sentence for each day in the date, plus two for a very early Halloween treat. That makes 9 sentences total.

“This Isn’t a Game”

This isn’t a game, Commanders.” Jon tried to stare them down, but Trip was too busy trying to stifle a self-satisfied smirk to even notice. This whole thing had his name all over it.

I was given the impression that that was precisely what it is, Captain.”

Staring down a Vulcan was all but impossible. T’Pol met his gaze so steadily and impassively that Jon shifted uncomfortably back to Trip, whose smirk had gotten the better of him. This one was his doing, but that last disaster with the murder mystery – that had to have been her work, because Trip’s mind didn’t operate that way.

“I think he means he wants us to take it seriously.” Trip nodded as though he was taking his own advice, but he was still grinning.

Is this a game?

Is T’Pol taking it seriously?

Is Trip?

Will T’Pol defend herself?

Will she fess up to whatever the Captain thinks she did?

Will there be consequences for our interrupted lovers?

Well, if you want the answers to these questions, you’ll just have to come back next week!

I’m in the process of serializing the prequel to this story, “Mission Accomplished”, over at #8sunday. You can read the current snippet, “Stow the Fantasies, now, and the next segment goes live just after midnight on Sunday. There’s also a list so you can catch up, if you’re coming in late.

Looking for more tasty WIPpet Snippets? You can find those, or add your own date-related excerpt, by following the little blue froggy from WIPpet to WIPpet to WIPpet! It’s a WIPpet buffet!

Trip proves that his engineering instincts are still spot-on, and that he knows what makes his Vulcan lady tick (not to mention plant one on him right in the middle of the corridor)!

I am myself. I own my life, and live with three other people who own theirs. My intention is to do only those things that bring me joy, and to give myself wholly to those things I do. Writing has been my passion throughout my life, and this will become the home for my writing life...because it brings me great joy!

  1. Great start. You set up the character’s personalities well in such a short span. Be proud of that! You also made me smile (the interactions are definitely setting a mood). Give yourself a pat on the back!

    Keep being awesome! 🙂

    1. Fortunately, T’Pol is in a particularly good mood, right now…and she has no doubt whatsoever about just whom Trip wants.

      I *think* you’re safe. Reasonably. Maybe…

    1. This was a scene that just popped into my head all but complete, with the dialogue, so I really can’t take credit for it. It’s easier when the lines are fed to me!

I read Slave Again last week. I planned on reading just a bit, to get my feet wet before going to sleep somewhere around 3am. Just before 9am, my Kindle shut down for lack of charge – when I was 14 minutes from the end! Yup, I dug out the charger, and waited for it to get enough power so that I could finish. It was that good!

I’m not fast at posting Amazon reviews, but there should be one from me in the next sometime or two! =)

  2. *snork* Trip. 😛 And T’Pol’s just, “Yes, it is.” No glee, no whining. Just statement of fact. And Jon even attempting to win a stare down with her… Hahahahaha!

    1. Gotta love Trip when he’s trying to be serious, but still comes off as a kid who snuck off with the last cookie and still has crumbs in his mouth!

And if you tell T’Pol it’s a game, you can’t just go and change the definition because it suits you better some other way. It’s a game. And she and Trip played it to the best of their considerable abilities….

You can’t tell that she’s got crumbs in her mouth, too – because Vullcans don’t gloat. =)

        1. Isn’t it, though. The secret inner life of a well-satiated Vulcan. Only Trip knows her secret..if only Jon knew why he’s grinning ear to ear like that, he’d think long and hard about these ‘team-building exercises’ of his, I think! =)

          1. It did indeed…although there may also have been bubbles. T’Pol loves to play with bubbles – Vulcan children play only to learn, you see…but Trip introduced her to them and she’s hooked like a little girl…and he gets to play with her, and watch her be all kinds of delighted and delightful…

Lather, she attests, makes a most logical source of bubbles…

Trip really likes that idea, too. Her logic is for once most handy…or is that handsy….?

There aren’t any other teams. This is a special project of Jon’s, because, although, as Trip observes, they make a hell of a team, the Captain thinks that they argue too much before they pull together and save the day – again.

He doesn’t understand that those debates are intellectual foreplay, as much as they are a way to brainstorm….

If he only knew what kind of team-building they’re ACTUALLY focusing on….he might be sorry he ever had this idea!

Fortunately, he’s still oblivious, at least at this point. =D

          2. Lather IS a most logical way to produce bubbles. And arguing can, indeed, work up a bit of passion.

Poor Jon. Sort of. I am definitely not #teamJon-ing at all. I am embarrassed for him, though. He’s really setting himself up.

          3. He kind of is, but, then, his goal might not exactly be what it seems, either.

I want Jon to be happy. Best he figure out that it’s not going to be with the pretty lady with the pointy ears….she’s busy working herself into a lather with the Chief Engineer…in more ways than one.

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
