All the Way Open : The IDIC Romance for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys! She’s our fearless shepherd…or something like that, anyway…

Today’s the final day of Story a Day September, so here I am with the last set of opening paragraphs.

If any of them speak to you, let me know in the comments.

Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters or their franchise. Trip and T’Pol just demand that I write what they tell me to. I don’t cheapen that with money; this is all free!

There may or may not be spoilers for all kinds of things here. You’ve been warned; the choice is yours.

WIPpet Sorta- Math:

  • Today is September 30, 2015.
  • One opening paragraph for each day of the past WIPpet week (Thursday – Tuesday), with extras. Today’s prompt isn’t live yet; I’ll add it to next week’s WIPpet.

Such a Sad Smile”(complete micro-story): September 24, 2015

Halloween. Lizzie’s Sweet Sixteen party, and the groom never showed up – he was screwing her best friend. But she was so brave. She wore the dress and the veil, even threw the bouquet at midnight like they’d planned.Smiled all night, and never cried till everyone went home. Such a sad smile though- you remind me so much of her, sometimes, pepperpot. Both of you – toughing it out, while your hearts are broken and your souls shattered. Come here, let me hold you – both of you. Maybe hugs can’t make this better, but they can’t hurt, either.”

She and I” September 24, 2015

We’re no different, she and I.” A whisper, as a tear falls on the black and white of the hospital floor. Wave of sorrow, longing, sharp-edged grief …she’s being rolled under.

If She’s Dead” September 24, 2015

The father stands in the shallow water, holding a small blonde child. She struggles, staring out at another blonde head as it breaks the water’s surface. The father sets the child on her feet. She runs to the boy, who sweeps her up, laughing, lifts her high, arms spread as though she’ll take flight. Then he kneels. They’re on the same level. The girl points out at the ocean, and he nods.

The Monstrous More September 25, 2015

He never would have guessed that she had a monster living inside her. Sure, he’d seen her passions, knew she could lose that famous Vulcan control of hers, even knew it was a hell of a lot more likely to happen when they were alone together.

Are You Going to Eat That?” September 26, 2015

Eat, meat, treat, feat, greet – “

Lost, Found, Lost: September 27, 2015

Trip didn’t understand. She’d hurt him, somehow, and that was something she didn’t understand. She wanted to go back, to tell him she would attend Movie Night with him, stay the night if he wished, that she had no desire to ever be apart from where he was, even for the space of a single breath, and that his inanimate engines could never need him the way that she did.

We’d Better Hurry”: September 28, 2015

Trip had his hands full – of quietly trembling Vulcan, and all the things he felt for this maddening, frustrating, downright confusing woman. Less than six hours ago, she’d told him that she just plain didn’t have time for him. She was too busy with her precious Kir- whatever-the-hell-it-was-called to go to Movie Night with the likes of Charles Tucker the Third. Okay, not in those exact words, but her point was damned clear.

Too Close for Comfort: September 29, 2015

What the hell happened to them, Phlox? Why is Trip in Vulcan robes?”

Too Close for Comfort (Alternate Version): September 29, 2015

Trip rolled over, and reached for her….and found only cool sheets, not her hotter-than-human body.

So, do you have a favorite among these openings?

Is there one (or more) that doesn’t work for you?

Do any of these make you want to read the next paragraph?

Tell me which you like (one, two, more, all) and, I will post the next paragraph in the comments. Multiple votes get multiple paragraphs, and you can comment on those, too,! I’m willing to post as many as you’re eager to read!

I want to know what makes you want to read more, and also if there’s something that turns you off. All of the openings are on the rough side.

And, in case you missed them:

I’m serializing one of my stories, “Mission Accomplished”, over at #8sunday. You can read the current snippet, “Vulcans Don’t Scowl”, now, and the next segment goes live just after midnight on Sunday. There’s also a list so you can catch up, if you’re coming in late.

And, starting next week, something new here, too. What is it, you ask? Well, come on back next Wednesday and find out for yourself – you’ll get no spoilers from me! =D

In the meantime, get more  WIPpetty goodness, or add your own date-related excerpt, by following the little blue froggy from WIPpet to WIPpet to WIPpet! It’s a WIPpet buffet!

  1. Monstrous More and Too Close for Comfort. 🙂

I probably picked stories with really short paragraphs again. *sigh*

And I will be busy this week, I think. Much, in fact. Household projects, school stuff, and writing all together plus this huge book I want to read. the first book was as long as my Bible and I just finished it. *dreamy, contented sigh* I went 8 or 9 months without reading fiction other than my own and that of fellow WIPpeteers and finally decided I was going to tackle the monstrosity I expected to be a little bored with. Not terribly bored. Just enough to keep me from secluding myself in my room and reading to the exclusion of all else. It didn’t work. I sucked that book in like water. I’ve done self-imposed novel fasts in the past, when I focused on learning-reading, for up to a year at a time, but this last fast was caused by being so entirely repulsed by a book I stupidly stuck out to the end. That epic was exactly what I needed. Only now I have to get book 2 and hopefully not disappear for 4 days because of it.

      1. I understand that! =) No fears, entire stories will eventually be in the offing. I just need to do some revisions, and make a leap of faith or ten….

And watch this Firefly movie….maybe twice, or thrice….or as many times as I can sneak it in before my rental expires….

    1. Monstrous:

But this monster made her nothing but endless, ravenous hungers.

      “Moremoremore.”

      “Pepperpot, I can’t….spirit’s willing, but the human’s weak – “

She stared into his eyes, and her pupils had swallowed up all the hazel. Maybe it was because he was really drunk, and everything was blurry. Tricky knowing where he ended and she started. Like she was in his skin, and he in hers….

      Close:

      “Mineminemine!”

Nightmare. Had to be. She’d knocked him out, maybe. Last he remembered was her snarling “Mineminemine!” right in his face, spit hitting him, her eyes staring without seeing.

No. After that. When he’d jammed the hypo against his own neck; held it till there was nothing left for her to poison herself with.

      Close (Alternate):

She was on the floor by her workstation, naked, with her candles flickering and her face bathed in the white glow of the datapadd she held on her drawn up knees. . She was murmuring softly in Vulcan. More datapadds were scattered around her, and her wardrobe was open.

Manic. Obsessive. He didn’t need to ask to know what she was reading, or that it had something to do with her mother’s death. Her mom had wanted her to read the Kir’shara, and T’Pol was damned well going to read it. He wasn’t even sure she could hear him. She didn’t show any indication that she had.

He got up, moving slowly so he wouldn’t spook her, bringing the blanket with him, because she might be chilly. “Hey, pepperpot – ”

He damned near slipped on a datapadd – they weren’t just near her, but all across the deck – “How the hell many of these are there?”

I give you extry paragraphs, because I Get It. And because I’m hoping you’re going to tell me what you’re reading! =D

      1. Yay!!! Extra paragraphs! ❤

Monstrous reminds me of that one creature in Spirited Away. 🙂 Insatiable appetite.

I find it very interesting that the two versions of Close have such different tones. One is snap-into-suspense and the other is sort of bewildered-sweet. Any particular reason?

        They're both great. 🙂

It's called Way of the Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I got Way for free, even though it came with an audio reading and is over 1000 pages long. So, I cheerfully dumped the $10 (which I would normally consider exorbitant for an ebook) into Words of Radiance. 😀 It is a true epic, I'll warn you.

    1. Alana, I’m not sure which one you meant, but I’m going to presume you meant the first set of microstories. “Smile” is complete as posted, but here are the second paragraphs for “She and I”, and “If She’s Dead”. FYI, these were prompted by photos; I had the idea that these stories all are moments captured when TnT are looking through Tucker family albums. I don’t think Vulcans have anything analogous, so this might be a new experience for T’Pol.

      “She”:

T’Pol traces your seven times great grandmother’s face – upturned, staring at her newborn too far away to cuddle. “We both know what it is to yearn.”

      “If”:

      The video goes dark.

If these weren’t the ones you wanted more of, let me know, and I’ll get you what you want! =D

    1. I’m giving you the third paragraphs for each, since Fallon has the second…and I’m adding the two versions of Too Close, because they’re sequels-of-sorts to “Hurry”, which is the sequel to Lost (it gets crowded in my head sometimes….

      Anyway, here you go!

      Lost:

She turned and backed down the ladder, watching him, hoping that he would look, see that she still watched, and somehow understand her turmoil and inner chaos. He didn’t look up from the console, and his hurt crashed into her, blending with her own, the intensity close enough to staggering her that she had to focus on maintaining a neutral expression, moving in her customary manner.

      “Hurry”:

But why had she gasped? Was she surprised? Scared? Hoping to be alone? Or not to be?

      Too Close:

“I’m not concerned with his clothing; it’s their neural pathways that are troubling me.”

      Too Close (Alternate):

T’Pol?” He rubbed his eyes as he sat up, scanning the room, heart loud in his ears. She hadn’t exactly been stable, even when she finally fell asleep.

Hope you enjoy enough to want more- things are about to get interesting….

    1. Interesting choices, especially since “Hurry” is a sequel to Lost. I’m also going to give you the next paragraph of “Too Close”, because it’s the current endpoint of this arc…

      Lost:

But she didn’t dare. Not until she understood the nature of her need, the pull that brought her, again and again, to the place where he was, to beat against whatever it was that kept them separate, trapped in this endless cycle of advancing and retreating, understanding and mystification, intimacy and distance.

      “Hurry”:

Had she come in to do more reading over tea, or was she hoping he might be here? She’d gasped when she saw him – and he’d seen those fingers twitch out, through the reflection, before he turned around to face her. But was that just the trellium in her system? He knew she’d used it; he could read it in the subtle shifts in her posture and movement, and the way she stared.

      Too Close:

      “Mineminemine!”

      Too Close (Alternate):

She wasn’t here. And she’d taken trellium.

Hope you enjoy them….also, check my pending comment to Ruth, if you’d like the next set – she chose the same two. =)

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
