Except in the Line of Duty: A Mystery for WIPpet Wednesday

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date.

It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys! She’s our fearless shepherd…or something like that, anyway.

Do you have a day, week, or month that’s emotionally chaotic?

I do. And this month is it.

I’m not ready, this early in the month, to go into all the reasons why – the highs and lows that make July the month I try to surf through, knowing I’m likely to wipe out here and there, and hoping it’s not too lengthy or ugly when it happens…

There’s nothing I can do about the lows, and I wouldn’t trade the highs (or, really, the lows either, because what I’d need to give up to have avoided them hurt too much to lose… or something like that).

Anyway, maybe it’s not a surprise that I begin this month – discombobulated and sideways. I’m still finishing my June project; I’ve got something about half plotted that I’m not sure where to fit in my production schedule, and the novel I’m slated to do is still being framed up, using a new method I’m learning as I go…

Life isn’t always tidy and organized…

Anyway, on to the WIPpet!

I’d been planning to return to my Trueborn series – it’s been quite a while since I’ve shared from that. But I haven’t exactly finished plotting it yet, in part because Life, and in part because I’m using the Snowflake Method for the first time. And first times – well, for me at least, they just take longer. Especially in July, apparently.

I’ll have something to share from it by next week. This week, though, I’m doing something a little different…

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is July 1, 2015.
  • I therefore offer one sentence of undisclosed ancestry, because I’ve decided to go with the tricky July vibe.

Except in the Line of Duty

Neither one of them spoke much at all, anymore, except in the line of duty.

Who isn’t speaking much anymore, and why?

Whose voice are we hearing?

What the bleep’s going on here?

When will we learn more?

I’m willing to answer the last question first. I’ll be posting the next few lines from this scene for #8sunday, if you’d like to learn like more. And that’s all I’m saying, for now – in keeping with the preference of the subjects of today’s sentence.

Looking for WIPpet Snippets with a bit more to say? Hop along with the little blue froggy; assorted WIPpetty lily-pads to choose from, and writers eager to share sneak-peeks with you! =D

  1. This comes from Trueborn? Hmm… Why do I want to say it’s the sisters? (my first thought was Spock and Christine after a particularly awkward moment, but that’s just my brain going places it probably shouldn’t)

    1. It might be from Trueborn, and it might not. Might be classic Trek, and it might not. Might be some combination of sisters, and might not. Might be Spock and Christine, or not….

Getting ready to prep my #8sunday post now…it will reveal – something….

      Yup, something.

*cackles evil writer laugh and wishes the cat was here to stroke, viillain style….*

      I

      1. I have two cats that are… correction, the third is talking to me from outside the window…. begging for attention that I could loan you to complete your villainous-writer ensemble.

          1. Oh, I don’t know… defying expectations and having a tortie as a villain-cat sounds cool. Though, since mine are black and white… and Fluffle looks a bit like Adolf Hitler, the offer still stands.

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
