WIPpet Wednesday: “ Until Today”

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys! She may be less physically present for a bit, but she’s still our fearless shepherd…or something like that, anymore.

Today’s WIPpet is brought to you by CampNaNoWriMo, and the word ‘too’…as in, it’s CampNaNo, and this is supremely rough, and there are way too many ‘toos’ here, and this is a run-on sentence and this is how I get when my mind is reeling with story and it’s 3am and people here have been sick for the last day and a half, now…

I’m sharing from Transitions; the first novella (or maybe a little longer than that…we’ll see) in my Kifo Island Chronicles series-in-the-making. The Kifo Island stories takes place at a resort that’s a little like hospice meets Fantasy Island

Transitions chronicles the intersecting and changing lives of Barry, Terrance, and Corinne…with unexpected tangles and angles.

But enough about me and the people who live in my head. Let’s talk about you for a minute.

Several of you were a little – well, let’s say put out – by last week’s post . In case you missed your chance to be miffed, here it is in its entirety:

Hey, Corinne – you ready in there?”

I really don’t understand. I mean, that’s six whole words, and it was April Oneth, after all….okay, I’m lying. I understand completely. And, for that reason, I’m going to make a gesture of appeasement. Here are the links to two other snippets – one long enough to pass for a flash story of its own. My suggestion is to read “Introductions”  first, because it closely follows last week’s sentence. Then read the passage below, and, if you still want more, give “Defiled?” a try. It happens somewhat after this week’s WIPpet.

I know it’s a little confusing. But the characters are feisty and rather unique, as is their reality, so, if you’ve got the time or don’t mind jumping around, you might find more satisfa
ction there…

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is April 8, 2015.
  • Math: Going to Scene 4 for the month; giving you eight sentences for the day. That’s it.

It had gotten too quiet in the studio, and the time had started to stretch far too thin for Terrance’s comfort. He was too aware of how quickly an interaction could go from friendship to something deeper and more dangerous; he’d let himself fall into those trysts, again and again. Sometimes, it was only seconds, while he clutched at the object of the animal lust. Sometimes, he told himself it was love. Other times, he knew he was only garbage, a receptacle for anyone who wanted him, for whatever use, just the way it had always been.

But, until today, he’d had two unshakable certainties.

Barry would always be faithful.

Barry would always forgive him, and take care of him, no matter what he did.

Until today? What’s so different about today? What’s Barry up to, and is Terrance right to be suspicious? And how the heck is Corinne involved in all this?

Now, after all the kerfluffle last week, I’m hoping that no one takes it personally that I’m not going to answer those questions here! I might not answer them for quite some time. There will be another snippet at #8sunday this weekend, and possibly another next WIPpet, but I also might have moved on to the next novella by then…in which case I’ll be offering that.

Whichever way things go, may your week be less frustrating than one sentence WIPpets! And you’ll find more delightful WIPpet Snippets by following the little blue froggy guy; assorted genres, styles AND LENGTHS to choose from! =D

    1. There’s quite a lot that’s changing, and more that will. But, mostly, this is something that’s been beneath the surface for decades, and is now coming to a head for several reasons.

Happy to have intrigued you! =)

  1. Interesting snippet. At first I thought maybe Terrance had had a little tryst and had been found out, but on a second read through it feels much more intense than that.

    1. Yes, it’s MUCH more intense than that. As it happens, Terrance has had many trysts, and always been forgiven by Barry. Now, though, he suspects that Barry might be succumbing – and Barry is the foundation upon which his sense of value is built…

I’m glad you gave it the second readthrough, and that the intensity came through.

  2. … I don’t think I like Terrance much. But this puts me in mind of an Agatha Christie book. I can’t remember the title, but it’s a Poirot. 🙂 It featured an artists whose wife was very tolerant of his models.

    1. Terrance can be extremely likable – and also not. He’s a very complicated character, with many levels…

Barry has indeed been far more tolerant of his husband’s models than I would be, if my Accomplice treated the waitresses at his job that way!

If Barry is engaged in less than faithful activities, Terrance honestly has very little moral high ground to occupy…which of course doesn’t mean he’s just going to accept it…

  3. I remember the other snippets, I think, from a while back. I recall being really interested in the concept. I have a feeling I’m going to very much like this. Despite the lack of much context, this does give a decent sense of Terrance. There’s enough to know he doesn’t have a lot of confidence in who he is—or that’s how it seems to me. I wonder why he’s now questioning Barry’s loyalty to him and what he might do about it.

    1. Oh, Amy – you’ve got Terrance pegged. Despite having been a very successful and talented sculptor, his sense of worth is always translated through Barry.

There could very well be a reason for his concerns, and he’s certainly not the type of guy to just sit back and let things get out of his control…

There have been several other snippets from this general storyline…so you may very well remember Terrance. I hope you enjoy – it’s my first time with this type of relationship, and I really want to get it right.

      1. I definitely want to know more! Sort of makes me wonder if Barry doesn’t want to be Terrance’s mirror anymore. I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops.

    1. *Pats Kate’s shoulder, and murmurs, “There, there….it’ll be all right….buythebookbuythebookbuy thebook”*

Oh, wait. Maybe I should finish writing it first?

I’ll get right on that! =)

  4. *prances around room singing* Don’t mess with my too-too! Don’t mess with my too-too! Don’t mess with my —

Oh, hey. Yeah. Happy Wednesday. 🙂 This week definitely makes up for your one-liner. It also leaves us with many, many questions. Which is a good thing. Makes us want to keep reading to answer those questions.

    1. It’s embarrassing that I know the “too-too” song well enough that now it’s background noise in my head…you know how to get even, even when you don’t send out the flying monkeys, Kathi! =)

It seems only fitting that I give you all many unanswered questions to deal with – since every one of these characters has a life full of unanswered questions of their own to contend with…

And, as they’re figuring things out, they aren’t doing in it in the ways I expected them to…I mean, I had a plot, and Cheat Sheets for each scene, and EVERYTHING..!

Yet, last night, two out of these three just BLEW. ME. AWAY. Nope, not saying which two, or why…and I’m honestly not exactly sure what they’ll do next, or what the one not in the scene will do…

Interesting times! And definitely come back Sunday for more, if you can (not necessarily answers, mind you – could just be more questions!). =)

      1. I hate to admit, but it always makes my day when other authors find themselves saddled with characters doing the unexpected. 🙂

And I’m also thrilled you know that song. I don’t want to be the only one whose head it’s bouncing around in.

        1. I don’t consider it being saddled – it’s when things REALLY get fun! I love that feeling of not being able to get the words out of my fingers fast enough, and feeling transported…then looking back at it and feeling more like the characters’ plaything rather than the other way round…

And time was, I could sing that song word for word.

    1. Then I think you’re going to love this story. Because those things are basically the entire story!

I have no idea, really, what part of my psyche these characters come from – but I know that they’re running away with the story!

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
