WIPpet Wednesday: “Can You?”

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

I’m sharing the final snippet from “Tigress T’Pol”, a locked-room story from The IDIC Romance, my Story A Day May Challenge project. This is a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction, exploring the interspecies relationship of T’Pol and Trip.

Disclaimers: T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

WIPpet Non- Math Math:

  • Today is January 28, 2015.
  • Non-Math: It’s the last January WIPpet, and the last snippet from this story. So there you have it.
  • You get 7 short paragraphs today – and this is almost it, so I hope you enjoy!

This story is an add-on scene for the pilot episode: Broken Bow Part 1. Ive done my best to extrapolate without violating series canon.

In February, I’ll be returning to Chameleon’s Dish (which may or may not become Never Doubt I Love) – to reconnect with Henry, Tisira, and Nockatee…I’ve been revising this month, and I’ve discovered how much I’ve missed this unique ‘threesome’…

But for now, there’s a Vulcan and a human locked in a cell… and footsteps are coming closer….so what will they do?

“That would be – most appreciated.” Damn – a please and a thank you – from a Vulcan. Not just any Vulcan, though – T’Pol, the one who’d twisted me up in knots a year ago, and tightened them in this little cell, making it our own private little paradise. How I was gonna keep from shouting that from the top of that beautiful Warp Five engine of mine, I wasn’t sure – but I would. I’d pretend I hated her in public, if it meant I got another chance to be alone with her, a bed, and a door.

“One level. Someone moving on this level, as well, approximately fifty meters ahead and to port. A female, obviously trying to remain undetected.” I didn’t ask how she knew, or if she was sure, because now I could hear the faint sound of feet above, descending the steps haltingly. “Commander, if you have the opportunity to escape -“

“And leave you here? No way, T’Pol -“

“That’s illogical. I’m well able to take care of myself.”

And I’m not?” I tried to ignore the fact that that Suliban – only one, dammit – had taken me out almost before I knew what was happening, while it had taken five -and a gun butt – to stop her.

“Someone needs to alert Enterprise to our situation, Trip. I will be able to protect the Captain and Ensign Sato, without need of a sidearm. Can you?” The feet got louder; we were running out of time. I wanted to argue, but she had a point. Didn’t mean I had to like it, though.

“If that’s the way you wanna play it,” I muttered, as the footsteps got really close, and I felt T’Pol setting herself, just like I was…

No, it won’t help to look behind the computer – there’s no more! Can you believe I just ended that on a cliffhanger?! Do you wonder what happens next? Well, you’ve got options. You can watch Broken Bow, and see how TnT get outta that cell, and what comes next. Or, if that’s not your cuppa tea, stay tuned – I’ll be sharing this story, extended, on a fan fiction site TBD, later in the year.

You can also come looking for me, but I’ll warn you – if you break my fingers, I won’t be able to type!

Why not just come back next week to go time traveling with me, instead?

And here, as a peace offering, is an “Unexpected” deleted scene, where T’Pol rather illogically needles a vulnerable Trip! Now that’s entertainment!

I am myself. I own my life, and live with three other people who own theirs. My intention is to do only those things that bring me joy, and to give myself wholly to those things I do. Writing has been my passion throughout my life, and this will become the home for my writing life...because it brings me great joy!

  1. Wah, that IS a cliffhanger! I’m going to have to very impatiently wait for later in the year now. (I daren’t start watching the show in case I end up getting hooked–it’s not on regular repeat like every other version of Star Trek is here and I have enough trouble keeping up with my regular shows… Plus, it wouldn’t have your writing in it, so it’d be that little bit less fun.)

    1. Awww, shucks. I highly recommend watching it if you get the chance…but I’m honored by your confidence.

My first TnT story will go live at Ad Astra, sometime this month. And there are 31 more TnT stories coming up in May…

And probably sooner, too…these two do NOT want me to stop writing their stories!

  2. I took last week off from wippeteering so that I could finish Facets of Glass, but now that I’m done, I have to stop by a couple of blogs to see how things are progressing. Nice cliffhanger, Shan! 🙂

    1. I suppose it wasn’t very nice, but…it just felt like the place to end things.

I haven’t gotten around to anybody yet – on my list for this extremely snowy Monday. I was polishing a short story that I really love, despite there being not a Vulcan in sight. T’Pol helped, though – she gave me three new stories, over the last week, with more brewing….

So she and Trip will be back, eventually! =)

How exciting to have finished your draft! =)

  3. Heh. 😀 Poor Trip. Good thing he’s so smitten AND so secure in himself, or her superior strength/speed/etc. might put him off her.

So-so-so!!! Guess what!!! I saw Leonard Nemoy in a NOT-SPOCK role last night!!!!! And he was brilliant! I kept staring at the character going, “It looks like Leonard Nemoy, but it doesn’t sound like the Leonard Nemoy I know, and it sure-as-shootin’ ain’t Spock.” 😀 My life is now complete. 😀

    1. He’s done LOTs of other stuff. LOTS. I had a Twilight Zone moment of seeing him IN Twilight Zone!

      What’d you see him in?

Oh, yeah…Trip. Yeah, most of the time, he’s pretty much OK with T’Pol being who she is…but there are aspects of her being a Vulcan that drive him beyond crazy…more on that another time – it’s a ways off, at this point.

Right now, wanting to protect Hoshi and the Captain comes first, once he realizes that the pretty lady sharing his cell really CAN take care of herself.

      1. I believe it. Gotta start small before you get big in acting. 🙂 I saw him in Perry Mason. As the murderer, no less. It was awesome. 😀

Enh, well, aren’t men driven crazy by the fact that women are women period? 😛 I imagine it can’t be toooooo much more frustrating dating one with a preference for logic over emotion and a sex-drive that’s through the roof. 😉 😛

        1. I haven’t seen him on Perry Mason, but he played a murderer on Columbo, (trying to kill Grandpa Will Geer from The Waltons, no less!), and he was brilliantly sinister.

He was on Mission: Impossible for two seasons, as well. And he directed Three Men and a Baby.

Well – Trip has this problem understanding that T’Pol says what she means, and doesn’t at all get the concept of asking around the thing you want to know. She doesn’t have the knack for human subtext. So he asks her something, or she says something, and he assumes she means something else – but she MEANS WHAT SHE SAID, TRIP! JUST what she said….

Her sense of duty is gonna trip him up (see what I did there?) too, even while he’s fulfilling his at the risk of his own life…

It’s a wild ride ahead for both of them!

          1. I think you’ve been looking on my hoosier cabinet bookshelf. I have two books of Leonard’s poetry there… ❤ I assure you, it's all completely logical.

  4. Nice! I am very much a trekkie and last year I finally watched all of the old series. I love Spock and Bones, something about their banter leaves me feeling giddy. I don’t know the finer details of the Star Trek universe, but am curious to read more. 🙂

    1. Trip and TPol can be a lot like Spock and Bones – with lots and lots of added sizzle (and Trip’s a much happier guy than Bones).

I’m in love with Enterprise – it’s my favorite Trek series – fantastic stories, huge arcs, great writing – and Trip and TPol. Plus a beagle. =)

  5. Well…that was just… *flips laptop over* Fine. You already said there wasn’t anything there but…really?!!? C’mon.
Where’s my monkeys. They’ve been lazy lately. I think they need to take a road trip.

    1. Oh, Okay….to avoid the monkeys, I’ll clue you in…Hoshi gets pushed into the cell, and the Captain taken off to a meeting with a Suliban woman, with important information to share.

Then there’s some shooting, and the woman releases the three in the cell, and gets killed trying to help them. The Captain gets injured on in a rooftop firefight, and T’Pol takes command when he loses consciousness…and then TnT end up in Decon, rubbing disinfectant gel on each other…

OK, it was more exciting than that…but I haven’t written those parts, yet, so….

I think your monkeys will freeze if they come this way! =)

  6. I love T’Pol. I think she’s more entertained by Trip than she lets on. I’ll miss her, unless you’re writing something else about the pair of them…? Obviously, I want to read the extended version. So keep us posted, please.

    1. I wrote something with them yesterday. =)

There’s really no choice; they won’t let me go! I’ll be writing 31 more stories for them in May – and I wrote one yesterday, too (more or less accidentally; I just needed to).

I’ll be posting their first story next month – I’m deciding where now. This story will be a bit longer -story #3 or #4.

I’ll definitely let my fellow WIPpeteers know where and when.

And yes, T’Pol is most certainly entertained by this humaniest of human men…and he clearly digs her! =)

    1. Yeah, Trip’s chivalry is definitely misplaced, because, well, he’s simply NOT stronger than her. She’s got the strength, the discipline, the experience…

I love T’Pol. She’s such a complex, fascinating character to play with –

And that blonde dude she’s into is pretty cool, too! =)

    1. I’m already missing them enough that I just wrote them another story! =)

Don’t worry, they’ll be back. They own my Story-a-Day May this year, and they’ll wiggle their way back into the WIPpets, too! =)

But Henry, Tisira, and Nockatee are also pretty cool people!

    1. I hope you liked the way I handled it…there HAD to be something between them before the Decon chamber…because Trip’s too much of a gentleman to simply cop a feel….and her response – well, SOMETHING’s gotta be behind that! =)

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
