WIPpet Wednesday: “About My Ears…”

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It’s hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

I’m sharing the penultimate snippet from “Tigress T’Pol”, a locked-room story from The IDIC Romance, my Story A Day May Challenge project. This is a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction, exploring the interspecies relationship of T’Pol and Trip.

Disclaimers: T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

Convoluted WIPpet Math So That I Get My Way:

  • Today is January 21, 2015.
  • Math: All digits played with this way: 1 + 2 + 1= 4; 4 x 2+ 0 =8; 1+5=6: 4+6 =10: 8+10= 18; 18-10=8….I know I could have done that in a far simpler way, but I’m way overtired, and I like playing number games from time to time.
  • You get 8 short paragraphs today – and this is almost it, so I hope you enjoy!

This story is an add-on scene for the pilot episode: Broken Bow Part 1. Ive done my best to extrapolate without violating series canon.

In February, I’ll be returning to Chameleon’s Dish (which may or may not become Never Doubt I Love) – to reconnect with Henry, Tisira, and Nockatee…I’ve been revising this month, and I’ve discovered how much I’ve missed this unique ‘threesome’…

But for now, there’s a Vulcan and a human locked in a cell… Trip was maybe about to learn what T’Pol‘s ‘extenuating circumstances’ were when those ears of hers picked up on something he couldn’t hear… today, we learn what T’Pol hears, and talk a bit about ears, too…

We’ll have some of this….because you KNOW this little cell interlude isn’t going to ease all the tension between these two!

Another few seconds that seemed to stretch out almost forever, until T’Pol said quietly, “There are four people approaching. I believe that two of them are Captain Archer and Ensign Sato, and that they, too, have been taken captivee. Their footsteps sound -” I could feel her frowning, trying to find a word that fit. “Reluctant – as though they are being forced.”

I kept my voice down, so I wouldn’t distract her too much. “I can’t hear anything. How far away are they? Can those pretty ears of yours tell that?”

“Two levels, perhaps three. It’s hard to be certain at this distance.” She half-turned back to me. “Commander Tucker – about my ears – “

I gave her the best innocent look I could muster – hadn’t ever fooled my mama, but T’Pol wasn’t Katherine Tucker, or even human. “Yes, Subcommander T’Pol?”

Her face softened, a little. “While I find your – fascination – with my auditory organs agreeable, in private, I request that you refrain from referencing it in the presence of the remainder of the crew. It’s a matter of – “

“Protocol. I know. And I’ll try to make it look like I’m still ticked off that you’re here, and that I haven’t gotten past the fact that your’e a Vulcan long enough to see that you’re a helluva sexy woman, and that you didn’t straddle me and damn near strip me, and that I have no idea at all how damned good you feel in my arms, not to mention the way you taste, and -“

“Trip.” She turned back to me, and there was something like fear in her eyes. She must’ve been scared, because the next thing she said was pure human. “Please.”

“Sorry,” I told her, and meant it. “I’ll behave.” At least, I would damned well try.

Can Trip behave? And are they headed for salvation, or deeper trouble? Is there ever going to be a bed and a door in their future?!

Come back next week to find out more!

And eventually, THIS!

Yes, I’ve counted..applying decontamination gel to Trip’s right shoulder five times isn’t exactly, well, logical…and that’s before the ear joke…but after Trip’s eyes and fingers head south, and other parts head – ahem, further north…

I am myself. I own my life, and live with three other people who own theirs. My intention is to do only those things that bring me joy, and to give myself wholly to those things I do. Writing has been my passion throughout my life, and this will become the home for my writing life...because it brings me great joy!

  1. Ah, but can he really behave himself? He’s struggling there already and, all things considered, you’d think he wouldn’t want to make T’Pol angry. :p

I forgot how much I love Vulcan phraseology: “auditory organs” is such an oddly cute way of putting it.

    1. Yes, he’s already seen T’Pol take out three Suliban, and he doesn’t know about the nerve pinch; so he’s not sure she didn’t kill them…and she shoved him against the wall…

He IS trying to behave. Of course, the rear view is mighty tempting, and there’s been a lot of talk about locked doors and comfy beds…

Poor Trip. T’Pol is absolutely a force to be reckoned with!

I love their phraseology too. And Trip? He’s rather fascinated with those auditory organs!

We’ll have to see if he can behave…and if T’Pol really wants him to… 😉

  2. Once again, great interaction between the two of them, Shan. 🙂 Excellent how their Upbringings / biology keep them apart, even when they are so attracted to each other.

The perfect recipe for romance, when it comes right down to it!

  3. Trip. Behave?!!? Like I’m supposed to believe that! I honestly can’t believe he didn’t reach out and trace the tip of one of those sensuous ears…ever so lightly…the tip of his finger sliding…

Forget it. People are coming. BEHAVE.

    1. Yeah, I’m a little skeptical, too. I mean, even he is only damned sure gonna TRY….

And, honestly, I think the only thing that kept his hands down was the thought that maybe she’d do to him what she did to the Suliban….or, maybe, pin him down again and finish what she started, comfy bed and locking door be damned….

      And, yeah. People are coming….

  4. Okay, I’ll admit, I have not seen Enterprise. I was raised on the Next Generation, but my TV watching has dwindled down to just Doctor Who in the past years.

That said, I might have to check this show out. What I like about your excerpt is that I had an immediate sense of who these people were, and what their relationship was like. I LOVE when that comes across in narrative. I connected with them, and now I want to see the show. Well done.

    1. I didn’t see it when it came out – I had a newborn, a new house, a cross country move, no cable, and I did NOT think I was going to like T’Pol one little bit (or that Quantum Leap Guy as a starship Captain). I fell deeply in love with Spock when I was 13; and I have extremely high standards for my Vulcans!

Wow, was she ever a surprise. And, although they have a sizzle right from the start, it takes a LOOOONG time for Trip and T’Pol to figure things out.

In my version of reality, they’ve met once before this mission, although they never spoke or touched. But that meeting set a string of events in motion..,

I’ve been watching very carefully (you caught me at the end of ‘Strange New World’, just putting down my pen after a note-taking session!). I like to write deeper into scenes, and into the spaces between.

Enterprise has a LOT of what made TNG so great, and it has humor and sensuality and some very involved story arcs (the Xindii arc covers all of Season 3). The character development and storylines are amazing; the writers didn’t rush (except for the last episode, which, in the tradition of the original series, was a travesty to all the amazing that went before….so be warned, if you watch).

And, on top of all that, we get a real Vulcan/human romance. Really, really real.

A few months back, I realized it was my favorite Trek (although to be fair, I never really got into DS9, and Voyager’s Vulcan’s body language was off-putting to me, so I didn’t watch it more than a few times.).

If you watch, I hope you enjoy it even half as much as I do! You can find it on both Netflix and Amazon Prime, if you’ve got access to those.

And, by the way, it’s a pleasure to meet you! =)

Now, off to tend my fire and then watch “Unexpected”, while I take more notes! =)

        1. I think I’ll chalk it up to human error, and forgive him. It’s been a bit of a rough few days, and she hasn’t exactly been friendly…well, at least, not until he kissed her, anyway, and, even then, she did pin him down on the floor….

          1. Oh, he’s allll human! He’s quite possibly the humaniest human on the ship!

If you watch those videos, you get to see some of that – and the series includes some mighty big Trip gaffes, goofs, flaws, and tragedies…I’ve written about some, and have plans for more.

One of the things I really love about Trip and T’Pol is that they are both as flawed as they are brilliant at their jobs and into one another. The series doesn’t flinch away from that – especially from the second season on.

I’m with you on not liking my heroes to be TOO perfect!

  5. She’s a stronger woman than I am. I’m not sure I’d be able to resist Trip there, talking about sexy times. Good thing they need to be careful not to get caught or they might wind up in a compromising position again.

    1. She’s a little terrified she’ll be found out; I’m thinking she’s already considering ways to stay with him – but there’s that pesky matter of being betrothed, and this being an eight-day mission….

But oh, yes – I think she desperately wants that bed and door – and for Trip to do some of those things he’s been going on about, so that she can find out what that would feel like…

But she most certainly doesn’t want to get caught!

  6. Interesting. I wonder how they got trapped together? Snippets are such a tease, probably why they’re called snippets. 😊 I love her ears and how you describe them, as far as how far she can hear. And, yeah, I’ll probably be a little scared too being in a cell alone with a man with such descriptive sex drive. Or was she frightened because of what she heard, hmm. Guess I’ll have to tune in next week to find out.

    1. They got trapped while they were searching for a kidnapped Klingon. That part’s canon, from the series pilot. Trip and T’Pol are captured between scenes, then, when we see them next, they’re standing in the cell.

I extrapolated on what happened between the point where they’re searching, and when we see them in the cell.

The reason is that decon scene. Trip’s a gentleman, and those fingers of his, and the traveling they do…he has to have had some indication from T’Pol that he was welcome to touch. And T’Pol certainly wouldn’t be messin’ with his ear that way, or stroking that shoulder over and over and over and….

It’s no secret at all that Vulcans hear a lot better than humans do – or that humans tend to love those points…I like to have fun with it!

I’m chuckling at the thought of T’Pol being afraid of *Trip’s * sex drive…you missed the early parts of the story, so you probably don’t know that T’Pol took out five men, unarmed, before they caught her (the first guy got Trip before he really knew what was going on). T’Pol is stronger than a human man, and she used to be an elite Vulcan security operative. She could easily stop Trip – permanently, if she chose to! At the least, she could drop him with a neck pinch!

What she’s more afraid of (and what you missed), is her own sexual response to him. It’s deep and instinctive and she doesn’t know how to control it. She’s not supposed to feel these things, and certainly not for a human man! He’s stirring up her life, and her ideas, and she’s flirting with the edge of cultural taboo…a very scary place to be, when your whole society is based on logic!

Oh, yes, do come back next week! And, if you want to see the whole story without going through months of blog posts, I will be posting it to a fan fiction site a bit later in the year. I’ll definitely be sharing the link here. =)

And I think you’ve given me the bones of another blog post, so thanks! =D
