WIPpet Wednesday: Figuring Stuff Out

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It is hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

I wanted to get to more WIPpets last week – really, I did.

And then the story took over, and, before I knew it, it was this week, with a new set of WIPpets…and another chance for me to do better…I’m traveling, and so there won’t be quite as much focus for writing – but maybe just enough for reading and commenting on WIPpets!

If I don’t get to you, feel free to lob something reasonably soft and smooth-edged in the general direction of my head…because I really, really don’t want to forget to visit you! =)

Anyway, here we are, back to TnT and their adventure in a little cell…

I’m sharing a snippet from The IDIC Romance, my Story A Day May Challenge project. This is a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction, exploring the interspecies relationship of T’Pol and Trip.

Disclaimers: T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

Last week Trip tried for humor to as a distraction, in, “That Query is Illogical” only, T’Pol took him seriously. This week, they try to figure stuff out, with a shocking twist or two…

Will Trip put his foot back in his mouth? Will T’Pol finally figure out how to get them out of there? Is there a comfy bed in their future? Read on!

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is December 10, 2014.
  • My simple math: 11 shortish paragraphs, and one added as a December treat (one shabbos candle; one star; one snowflake; one month to go till 2015, one sharp-eared Vulcan in a cell….your choice!)

This story is an add-on scene for the pilot episode: Broken Bow Part 1. Ive done my best to extrapolate without violating series canon.

T’Pol, listen – ”

Yes, Commander?” She turned her head slightly; but her fingers kept delicately probing the edge of the field generator; something I maybe should’ve done when we were first dumped here- except I’d been worried about her, and then she’d pushed me into the wall, and then I’d kissed her, and reality shifted forever, at least for me. But she looked like she was all the way back to duty mode and pure Vulcan logic, with no room left for anything as illogical as inter-species attraction.

I didn’t mean I was literally in danger of dying if we stay here. Truth is, I was talking to myself, and I had no idea those ears of yours are as sharp as they are beautiful -”

It would be highly illogical to evolve an ear shape specifically for aesthetic appeal, Trip. Vulcan ears are designed to capture and cup sound in a desert environment, where various factors can make tracking sound and source difficult. They are a survival characteristic; nothing more.”

Well, they’re a hell of a lot more to me. They’re beautiful, and I want to kiss them and nibble them and whisper things into them that would shock you down to your prim little toes – which I’ll just bet are as sexy as the rest of you…”

T’Pol’s left hand jerked just a little -and caught the edge of the beam. She made a startled little gasp, and shook it before examining it. She didn’t turn around, though.

Aww, hell, T’Pol. Sorry – I’ve got this habit of needing to figure stuff out. Makes me a pretty damned good engineer – but maybe not the best guy to share a cell with.”

Does that mean that you do not wish to – ” Damn, she was quivering again, and adding new layers of smell to those already in the little room. “To do the things you said you desired, regarding my ears and toes?”

I laughed. She didn’t have to be even looking at me anymore for me to know she was wearing that confused little frown. “Oh, I want to do them, all right, T’Pol. And more, too. I don’t want to miss so much as a centimeter between them. I want to make those toes of yours curl, and your back arch, and feel you quivering – and damn, woman, why don’t you just order me to shut my damned mouth?”

Perhaps that is something that engineers and scientists have in common, Trip. I also find- pleasure- in ‘figuring stuff out’. And I find your ears – ” She stopped, still facing the wall, with her head turned so I could get just a little peek of her face. I thought she wasn’t going to finish the sentence, when she added, “fascinating. Your ears – and the rest of you, as well. I can think of no one I would prefer to be locked in a cell with.”

All right, Tucker. Ball’s in your court; don’t blow it. At least she can’t see you picking your jaw up off the floor…

What’s Trip’s next move, here? Will he figure out the tempting little Vulcan lady who keeps shocking him, and herself? Did she hear his jaw hitting the floor?

Come back next week to find out more!

  1. I’ve got a big dopey grin on my face after reading this snippet. Of course T’Pol would lecture Trip on the nature of Vulcan ears, and Trip would continue to word vomit in response. 😀

    1. I love picturing your grin!

She really doesn’t get his fascination with her ears – I mean, until she went to Earth, everybody had ears just like hers…

And Trip..his basic reaction to T’Pol is to throw words at her! It’s not like he was a ladies’ man back on Earth, but this Vulcan woman – she just isn’t quite getting it – and yet, she is…and, of course, in a rather intense and intimidating way…

  2. Thanks for a delightful scene of intense attraction! And I enjoyed the two videos as well. The first video helped me see how close your snippet captures the personalities of Trip and T’pol, and the second one just made me laugh. The cast had a lot of fun making these classic scenes. 🙂

    1. The little glances and secretly naughty moments (no one else ever had nearly so much fun in Decon as those two!), the battles and entanglements…the writers, directors, and maybe especially Connor Trinneer and Jolene Blalock, were masterful at creating the largely unspoken runup to a real romance…

Something I really love about Enterprise, as opposed to any of the other Trek series I’ve watched, is that way it had of dropping subtle clues, and just letting them be there, noticed or not…but when the reveal comes, it’s believable, because all the groundwork was laid.

      It’s brilliant.

And, needless to say, the crew was most definitely having fun! It was the funniest of the Treks – there were all kinds of inside jokes, like Phlox’s critters, Trip’s quest to find out how old T’Pol REALLY is, T’Pol’s insistence about the nonexistence of time travel, Movie Night, and whether or not Porthos the beagle was going to get cheese…

More than one class clown in that bunch, for sure! And Jolene has to be the giggliest Vulcan I’ve ever seen- it’s really remarkable, because every interview with her, she’s grinning and giggling, and yet, T’Pol is spot-on…

      I find that fascinating.

    1. ‘Effective but lacking in eloquence’ – that’s Trip to a T!

When I reread the snippet, I noticed that I left out the very important bit where he’s saying this so softly he really can’t hear himself, just so he can figure out if SHE can still hear him…

      Of course, she can….

And I think his brand of love talk suits her just fine. Because, let’s face it – Vulcans are not remotely noted for being at all adept at that sort of thing. Just by being human and interested, Trip’s waaay ahead of the curve, there! =)

  3. Oh man, you just nail T’Pol’s natural logic about things. That ear comment–LOL Because that’s definitely what someone thinks of at a time like that.

    1. Well, it’s what a very confused Vulcan someone thinks about at a time like that, apparently….

Along with an almost desperate interest in whether this bewilderingly appealing human really means the things he says about them…

All she’s really got at her disposal here is her logic and all these new emotions, instincts and intense reactions….she’s more or less playing it by ear…..

Yeah, I just said that. I’ve had maybe 2 hours of sleep….*looks around, blinking, wondering if the flying monkeys can find her in New Jersey….*

        1. I’ve gotten a whole other hour of sleep since that last comment. I could be too sleepy to even notice the monkeys…=)

But I’m edging in on the end of this surprisingly long draft….and T’pol wants a word from you!

        2. Ha….if they don’t get here in the next few hours, they’ll have to look for me on the road…and I’ll be with my kids. The monkeys don’t want to traumatize not-so-small children, now do they?! =)

  4. She sounded about as disappointed as it’s possible for a Vulcan to sound when she asked if Trip didn’t want to do things to her ears and toes! Reading this scene, I’m reminded of the way Trip said she was both sensual and clinical (I can’t remember the exact wording). She’s doing it again here. Too funny!

    1. Vulcans do not have a flirting guidebook, and no one’s ever talked about T’Pol’s ears and toes that way before….and I’m thinking she really REALLY wants to know what that would feel like…

It’s funny and sweet, the way they flirt.

      1. A Vulcan Guide to Flirting would either be really wonderful or really awful…or maybe both! 😀

It’s definitely charming how they are with each other.

  5. Same as Alana, I love that line ‘It would be highly illogical to evolve an ear shape specifically for aesthetic appeal’. A brilliant come back to Trip. I don’t know much about Star Trek but I do love the Vulcan logic! 😉

    1. T’Pol definitely uses logic in – interesting – ways, sometimes…I think that just turns Trip on even more…

Enterprise is my very favorite incarnation of Star Trek.

  6. It would be highly illogical to evolve an ear shape specifically for aesthetic appeal ~ spoken like a true Vulcan! Now let’s hope no Ferengis show up to add to the ear fetish! 🙂

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
