WIPpet Wednesday: Cowl Invites Touch

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It is hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

My life has slowed down considerably the last few days. I came home from our local NNWM Write-In Sunday night with a migraine and an odd dizziness that made me feel not quite in charge of my body…I’m better, but I’ve got the feeling that, if I push myself too much…so I’m writing, but my pace has slowed. I’m paying attention to what my body needs, rather than rush back to a more typical routine.

And, just in time for the new year, I got my three contributor’s copies of World Unknown Review!

My story, “A Splash of Red”, is a combination of a dream, my own life, and a lot of imagination…I first conceived it three years ago, and there’s been a lot of tinkering, revisioning, cutting apart, shuffling, and putting back together (literally)…

Pretty amazing, to read it in a collection on my Kindle screen, and hold a print copy of the anthology in my hands, flip to page 37, and see my own name, and my own story!

It totally makes up for the not feeling great in body…my spirit is out there, dancing on stars!

If you’ve got $.99 burning a digital hole in your digital pocket, this anthology is definitely worth it (yup, that’s a shameless plug. Forgive me; I’ve never had a story published before, and I’m excited!).

I’m writing the penultimate scene of Perchance to Dream, the last WIP I have left in a “hanging” state, and which I want to have finished by 2015. I think I’m going to be able to do it! =D

Trip and T’Pol are finishing up their holiday break this week, but they’re in a giving mood, and have invited us in for another take on their first meeting…no, I’m not talking about the ‘official’ one, in Captain Archer’s Ready Room, but a more clandestine encounter, when a young Vulcan woman illogically follows her curiosity, and chaotic music, and is Awakened to a smiling human man who holds music in his hands

This poem was originally written for OctPoWriMo; TnT snuck in to claim several poems for their own, this year. This one is a little rough, in places, but it’s got potential – like seeing someone utterly unexpected walk into the room, and shift the course of your life, without saying a word, or touching in any way you’ve ever known…

It’s a blitz poem, one of my favorite new poetry forms. It’s intended to be read aloud and quickly, without punctuation….

Disclaimers: Trip and T’Pol, , as well as the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

WIPpet Non-Math:

  • Today is December 31, 2014.
  • It’s New Year’s Eve, and this moment has a festive vibe (who knows, it might even BE New Year’s Eve!), there’s the correlation. I’ve probably mentioned by now that I’m not especially a rules girl….and I like daring Kathi’s flying monkeys now and then! ;D

You can catch a bit of  the cowl here…

Cowl Invites Touch

Alien woman prowls in

Face framed by a cowl

Cowl hides pointed ears

Cowl names her Vulcan

Vulcan eyes search

Vulcan eyes stare

Stare into me

Stare and declare

Declare alien yearnings

Declare Vulcan fires

Fires hot and unexpected

Fires like plasma arcs

Arcs sear and burn through me

Arcs scorch through soft jazz

Jazz binding us together

Jazz winding through us both

Both caught in arcing music

Both caught up in a breath

Breath tangles into music

Breath exhales wanting

Wanting this to never end

Wanting so much more

More music more time

More whatever this is

Is she feeling what I do

Is she even able to feel

Feel her heart beat faster

Feel hot blood in her veins

Veins green-hued not red

Veins from mind to heart

Heart opening to heart

Heart conquers mind

Mind pleads for reason

Mind begs for logic

Logic burned by plasma fire

Logic utterly undone

Undone by Vulcan eyes

Undone by shadows

Shadows moving softly

Shadows on her face

Face transformed by music

Face inconvenient facts

Facts of human man

Facts of Vulcan woman

Woman breathing in music

Woman I long to touch

Touch her deep within

Touch her man to woman

Woman

Within

Next week, we’ll go back to that nondescript little Suliban cell where TnT are creating the shape of things to come – and lots and lots of sparks and friction!

May you, one and all, ring out 2014 with fondness and warmth; and welcome in 2015 with love and a sense of adventure!

It’s (Nearly) A Wrap!: 2014 Writing Goals

Click the icon to learn more about ROW80!

How do you say farewell to the outgoing year, and welcome in a new one? Do you have goals, or fly more by the seat of your pants into a wide-open future? Do you feel that everything is more or less the same, from one year to the next?

As the last days of 2014 unfurl, I’m drafting the final five scenes of Perchance to Dream, my last “hanging WIP” (incomplete draft). If I finish it before midnight on Wednesday, this will be the first year since I began writing seriously that I’ve had this “clean slate”. I’ll be able to begin 2015 with all of my projects ready for the next stage of creation.

I think that’s pretty cool!

Since 2012, I’ve framed my writing goals using Kait Nolans wonderful A Round of Words in 80 Days. Much more than a writing challenge, ROW80 is an amazing online writing community, a resource, and a means to track progress, refine goals, and be accountable for moving toward them (Round 1 2015 starts on January 5, if you’re interested in joining us!).

At the beginning of 2014, I set annual goals, using a long-term list I created in Kristen Lamb‘s excellent Blogging for Brand class. Now, at the end of the year, let’s peek back and see where I’ve ended up….which will help me to set my Big Picture Goals for 2015.

Into the Time Machine we go…

2014 Blogging:

Completed:

Build positive blogging habits – post regularly, answer comments.

  • Comments still more hit-or-miss than I’d like. Something to address.

  • Posting is better; mostly regular.

Overhaul sidebar for Trueborn Jottings (it’s the least noxious!).

  • Done- but thinking this blog will expire in 2015, and be merged into my website-to-be.

Add all useful bits, templates, links, etc, for each feature to Master Resource File.

  • Done, but now use templates, instead. Good learning experience.

Underway:

Focus on layout and design aspects of my Blogging Action Plan.

  • Not so much…

Build positive blogging habits –build queues, and share diversely.

  • Still more hit-or-miss than I’d like. Something to address.

Brainstorm what I want in a website; move The Unfettered Life to a spiffy new home.

  • Not much written, but a lot of beneath the surface pondering.

  • TUL will be incorporated into the website, in some form.

Not This Year:

Queue one post for each regular feature.

  • I need a better plan for queuing. Or a plan, period… =/

2014 Writing:

Completed:

Complete rough drafts of To Be or Not to Be and The Stars Are Fire.

  • Both completed this year.

Explore my gestating Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction novel concept, as well as the Last House story collection concept, in the form of short pieces or flash fiction, during April and May.

Draft two more novels in the Trueborn double series, as NaNo projects.

  • Shifted goal to one; at over 270K words, the Monsterscript is complete!

Underway:

Complete rough draft of Perchance to Dream.

  • Currently writing scene 56/60; may still be wrapped up by year’s end.

Not This Year:

Freewrite on the ideas I’ve had for the unwritten portions of the story.

  • A little progress; I want more.

2014 Editing:

Underway:

Complete first revision pass for Chameleon’s Dish.

  • My first serious revision using a plan. It’s taking a lot longer than I anticipated, but the results are an order of magnitude or two above the rough draft, so I’m very happy with that!

Complete Deep Revision process with my three short story WIPs.

  • Again, this took longer than expected. I completed 1/3, “A Splash of Red”.

  • ASOR” was submitted to, accepted, and published in World Unknown Review!

Not This Year:

Complete first revision passes for Bounded by a Nutshell; make pre-revision notes for Blood and Breath.

  • These are waiting until CD is complete.

Revise all poems for Queen of My Infinite Spaces, until satisfied with the results.

  • Nope. And now I’ve added a second set of OctPoWriMo poems….

2014 Hometending:

Underway:

Continue physical and virtual hometending plans – resetting rooms, cleaning files, and inhabiting my study.

  • Not as much forward momentum as I’d hoped, for various reasons to be analyzed before Round 1.

Continue the family room reset.

  • Creeping along in chaotic fits and starts, but getting there.

Spend time daily in my study.

  • Again, this went in fits and starts; with periods of use and non-use.

Develop new habits that support organization and productivity.

  • This was also more hit or miss than I wanted it to be.

Experiment with play project schedule.

  • I did this for a while; then moved on to other means of organzing and arranging my time.

Not This Year:

Research small business establishment /administration.

Read at the Small Business Administration website.

  • Not really ready for this, so set it aside.

2014 Lifetending:

Completed:

Make plans to meet with at least 1 person on my get-together list; get in touch with at least 2 more to express my wish to reconnect.

  • Got together with several friends; contacted even more, and made some new ones!

Seek out playful new ways to move and challenge my body.

  • Yes!

Underway:

Stretch and find new ways to blend the facets of my life with intention and awareness.

Select and complete projects from my Play Jar.

  • I did not as many as I wanted; but some.

So, there’s my 2014. I’ve finished a few things, moved many forward, and left a few largely untouched. I’ve lived, and learned, and grown….

Now it’s your turn! What was your most stunning success of 2014? What do you wish you’d done more of? You know what to do with that little box down there, right? =)

SoCS : “Consuming and Consumed”

Anyone can play! Click here to join the SOCS fun!

This post is part of Linda G.Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday meme.

The idea is simple – post an unedited stream of consciousness piece that ties into the weekly prompt –this week’s is consume.

I’ve officially finished writing the rough draft of my NaNoWriMo. novel , The Earth Doth Move.

I still have one more rough draft I want to complete this year, so I’m offering you a streaam-of-consciousness bit of Perchance to Dream. I’ve shared another bit or two from this story in previous SoCS posts here, and here.

We’re getting close to the end, here, so there may not be any more of this draft shared – by next Saturday, I hope to be finished, and the chance of spoilers is getting larger…

So, here we are, with a young dreaming Vulcan, and danger, and questions about what he’s consumed, and whether it will consume him…

Disclaimer: Spock, T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful even when I’m not logical!

But into the dreams came those who would Hunt him. There was T’Pol, his t’hy’la, whose flames scorched and consumed. The Burning One would use him to reach her first bondmate, claim his body for her purposes.

“You told me that you would be T’Lys, for me, if I would be Trip for you, t’hy’la!” Was that his own voice that quavered into a register higher than it had in years, now? Was it he who shook so?

“I wanted it to be so…” She shook her head, and there was guilt and sorrow in her mind, and writ clear upon her face. “I’ve hurt you; I didn’t want that. I wanted to be your answer, as you’ve been mine.” There was something – a shadow, a shifting, and that same face, and her body, battered, eyes no longer focused on him, but closed, their lids swollen, discolored….broken -she was broken…..

“Was it me? T’hy’la – did I do this thing to you?”

“No, not you, son. This happened after you left- “

“Left? What do you mean, left? Trip, I have slept; Phlox says that my needs have been met, for now.” There was a fragile beauty to her, even with her swollen face, her broken body. “You said you would tell me when I’d met those conditions. Tell me now. Spock is gone?”

“You used me only for your own consumption! Would you have me stay, until I was used up, and there was nothing remaining to me? T’hy’la and Kiral have I named thee, but thee – thee wants only him -only this long-dead human you will not release!” Why was he so shaken, so angry? He had held this katra; and he had shared in her mind. She Burned; she could not be other than what she was, who she was.

What logic was there, in blaming a Burning One? Surely, she would be only as she was, and nothing other.

“What of your consumption, son?” The human had a gentle voice, a soothing manner. “No, what she did – it wasn’t OK, and you got hurt. I stopped her, as soon as I could – but you can’t expect logic of a Burning One, and you, of all people, should know the need for something you can’t have – weren’t you trying to use her the same way? Weren’t you angry only because, once the fires rose up and consumed her, she couldn’t see you or help you? So tell me, Spock – what are you consuming, to try to touch your Huntress?”

Spock wanted to hide, now, and started to back away. “I claim this as my own, and I will have privacy in it.”

But T’Pol, even broken, even with what she had done to him, pried open her eyes – only a thin slice of the muted greengold showed, but enough. “Oh, young one -what is this thing I have given to you? I fear that what you think to consume, in order to feel her, will instead consume you.”

Enjoy stream-of consciousness writing? Anyone can play, so long as they are willing to follow a few simple rules. See you next week, for another live-streaming look into the lovely chaos in my mind! =)

WIPpet Wednesday: Not This; Nor That

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It is hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

Trip and T’Pol are taking a holiday break this week (no telling what kind of mischief they’ll get up to, but it was time that they had a bit of privacy…).

Instead, I’m going to offer you something I’ve never done as a WIPpet before – a poem.

Just a short one, in the diamante form…about another pointy-eared fascination of mine….

In other news – I’ve been published! Even cooler, I get to share the anthology with a fellow WIPpeteer, Fallon Brown!

My story, “A Splash of Red”, is a combination of a dream, my own life, and a lot of imagination…I first conceived it three years ago, and there’s been a lot of tinkering, revisioning, cutting apart, shuffling, and putting back together (literally)…

Pretty amazing, to read it in a collection on my Kindle screen!

If you’ve got $.99 burning a digital hole in your digital pocket, this anthology is definitely worth it (yup, that’s a shameless plug. Forgive me; I’ve never had a story published before, and I’m excited!). Just click on the image, and it’ll take you to the link!

Looking for something to read by your Christmas tree?

Disclaimers: Spock, his parents, his sehlat I-Chaya, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

WIPpet Non-Math:

  • Today is December 24, 2014.
  • It’s Christmas Eve, and diamante poems look a little like stars, so there you go!
  • Sehlat bit starts at 3;13; but the whole thing is good!

Not This; Nor That

Half

I am

As I am

Not this; nor that.

What is it that I am?

Did my parents consider that?

Query whispered to my old sehlat.

I-Chaya answered not; nor cared that I am half.

I sought after answers, silently sat

Upon my meditation mat

What is it that I am?

Not this, nor that.

As I am

I am.

Half

May you, one and all, pass the Christmasing hours, or, if you don’t celebrate Christmas, simply a joyous winter Thursday…with light and love and life and laughter and a dream or two coming true!

A Nestful of Gifts: December 24, 2014

Come join us for Round 1, 2015 – begins January 5!

Can you believe that the round is over? That the year is only a week from the same?

It’s been an eventful week, in an eventful year. I’ll be looking back on my progress toward my original 2014 goals on Sunday, and hitting the high points..

But this one bit, I’m busting out to share right now!

My short story, “A Splash of Red”, has been published in the first annual World Unknown Review and is now available on Amazon, as a print literary journal and a Kindle ebook!

Revising and submitting this story was one of my Round goals – and being able to read it in a literary journal, collected with other fascinating stories, reminds me of why I set goals and devote a considerable amount of my time to attaining them…because a chance not taken is unlikely to bring my closer to my dreams…

It’s a valuable gift, this reminder…. I seldom accomplish everything I wanted to, in a day, a week, a month, or a year…but the truest rewards are in the striving, the focus, the commitment, and giving myself permission to make my own aspirations as important as my family’s.

May we all have that, this holiday season, and always….

Bonus Cuppa: Alana Terry’s Torn Asunder Blog Hop!

Grab a cuppa and a comfy seat, and let’s chat a while! It’s time for a Coffee and Conversation Bouns Cuppa!

When I was six, my family was driving on a highway late at night. Streaks of headlights and taillights painted the dark. For the first time, I realized that each car held people living lives as important to them as mine was to me.

I wanted to know what those lives were, and to share my own..

Today, I’m pulling out the Figurative Literary Soapbox for my fellow WIPpeteer, Alana Terry, who’s here to share her tragic and beautiful love story with a mission, Torn Asunder. And, even better, we can help!

Just let me make sure everyone’s comfortable, Alana….all set, everybody? OK, Alana – the soapbox and the blog are all yours! Welcome!

Torn Asunder by Alana Terry

Torn Asunder is the newest suspense novel from award-winning author Alana Terry. Torn Asunder is the story of Hannah and Simon, two North Korean refugees who sneak back into their country to serve as underground missionaries. In this world of spies, secret police, and informants, Simon and Hannah learn that staying together won’t just compromise their ministry. It could cost them both their lives.

Torn Asunder launches today for just 99 cents, and all book sale proceeds today support the work of Liberty in North Korea, an organization that runs an underground railroad for North Korean refugees. You can get the paperback or the ebook for 99 cents for a limited time only. And remember the best news ~ Your purchase will help save a North Korean refugee!

Excerpt from Torn Asunder:

Simon gritted his teeth. His head felt like it was sinking. The general kept his voice level and pleasant as he slipped the device over Simon’s pinky. “Now, you just tell me who you delivered your Bibles to, and I’ll let you leave here with everything intact.”Simon tried to swallow. His whole jaw was swollen from his scuffle in the woods. He shut his eyes and hoped the general couldn’t feel him tremble.

General Sin chuckled to himself. “Silly me. I forgot.” He slid the device off Simon’s finger. “This kind of tool won’t work on a big, strong man like you.” He strode over to Hannah and yanked her hand before Simon could even cry out. He jammed her ring finger into the opening.

Simon struggled against his iron restraints. “Let her go!”

Hannah sucked in her breath. General Sin still glared at Simon. “This is your last chance. Give me the names, and I’ll release her unharmed.”

Simon’s field of vision blurred over. He wanted to scream. The metal from his handcuffs sliced open his wrists. He pictured himself breaking free and tackling the general to the ground.

“Better talk.” General Sin yawned. “I hate getting my uniform messy.”

Hannah’s hand trembled, but she didn’t make a noise.

“Three …”

Simon clenched his jaw, unable to tear his face away from Hannah’s wide, terrified eyes.

“Two …”

Thank you, Alana! I’ve loved reading snippets of this story in your WIPpet Wednesday posts; and the artwork is breathtaking! Your mission is profound, and I’m happy to be able to help in this small way, and the other small ways you’ve offered.

How about everyone else? Ready to read a great book, at a low price, and do some holiday kindness? Ready to Tweet or post on Facebook?

Well, you know what to do -go forth and spread the love!
