WIPpet Wednesday: Thanksgiving Night Terror

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It is hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengel, maven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

I’m sharing a snippet from The IDIC Romance, my Story A Day May Challenge project. This is a Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction, exploring the interspecies relationship of T’Pol and Trip.

Disclaimers: T’Pol, Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of CBS/Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

I’ve got something a little special today… here in America, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so I thought I’d share another scene that didn’t quite make it into the current draft of my WIP…but, if you don’t want to know what goes on with TnT a little more than three years down the road….

DON’T READ THIS WIPpet!

WIPpet Math:

  • Today is November 26, 2014.
  • My simple non-math: Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so here’s a treat for the season: 762 words.

This story is an add-on scene for the Season 3 episode: Harbinger”. Ive done my best to extrapolate without violating series canon. It takes place some time after this scene, in the aftermath of lovemaking.

She was crying, and still quivering, and, at the same time, the corners of her mouth tugged up a tiny bit, and it transformed her face…I kissed the tears, noticing my blood on her lips, and kissed it away. Her eyes were incandescent, her soul laid bare, vulnerable, as she touched and explored – the wildness seemed to have faded, at least a little, but she explored as thoroughly as though I was a Sphere, or some other scientific mystery to be solved. She said nothing, still, but I could feel her – lost in feeling, in something that felt halfway like a dream.

I wanted to stay- wanted it more than I had wanted anything- wanted to sleep with her and wake up with her, so I could know for sure that this wasn’t all some elaborate and wonderful dream…

Want me to go?’

Go?”

I pried an eye open. “I’m half asleep. If you want me out, I’d better go now, or you’ll be stuck with me.”

Will you stay?” Her lip trembled; as though she was afraid I would leave her alone.

You bet I will. Come here – let me hold you.”

She curled into me, reminding me of a cat. Damn, she fit so well up against me, her breast pressed in against my side, her head on my chest. “ I can feel your heart. I believe I know the nature of revenge,” she said, almost as though she was talking to herself. “So perhaps we are not so different….”

It seemed to have some meaning, maybe even to hold a warning- but I was tired from a long day and a strenuous night, and I couldn’t think….

**

Sharp, panting breaths, and something – someone? – struggling against me, in my arms…

Her scent and her voice, at once.

If you prick me, I will bleed. My blood is not red. I am not as you; not human. My blood is green, and hot, and swift, and holds more passions than your slow cool blood could ever know.”

I understood every word; but there was something strange in them. Her body was rigid, tense, quivering.

When you breathed in my ear, it tickled. It tickled, but I did not laugh. I have never laughed. But Corporal Cole is ticklish, and laughs.  Perhaps I can’t laugh.”

It clicked. Lizzie had had night terrors, when she was small. She would go stiff, like this, and holding her, trying to hug her, only caused her to fight. But T’Pol had said Vulcans guided their dreams, hadn’t she?

T’Pol? Hey, T’Pol?”

I loosened my grip, and she got up without aknowledging me, to stand, naked and half crouched, ready for an attack, light on the balls of her feet. But her eyes were open wide, unblinking and unknowing. She was somewhere else, in her mind – somewhere with Shakespeare.

If you wrong us, do we not revenge? You have been wronged- but you seek more than revenge. Did she hurt me? Not knowingly, no….but she hurt me, when she touched you… Trip!”

I’m right here.” I didn’t know if she could here me, but Lizzie had, sometimes, enough to come back from wherever she’d been.

If you prick me, I will bleed. Bleed – blood on the walls. Passion green. Fresh – get me out! Trip. So much blood; too much blood….blood of my people…”

She sagged to the floor, holding her knees, rocking, staring, sweating- like she’d been, that first few days after Seleya...

We’d all thought she’d recovered – but this looked like a flashback.

I trusted my instincts and went to her, leaning in close to her ear, knowing she might hurt me if she thought I was a threat. “T’Pol, you’re safe. Breathe.”

I placed my hands in the first posture she’d taught me, and I felt her start to breathe into it, as I slowly increased the pressure.

She came back to herself quickly. “Perhaps we’d be more comfortable on the bed.”

You’re probably right, but this is where you were. T’Pol, how long have you been having night terrors?”

Night terrors?”

I knew her well enough to know she was evading the question. “You know what I mean. How long?’

It’s irrelevant.”

No, it isn’t. If you won’t answer, that means you don’t want me to know. That means too long. How often?”

She looked uncomfortable. “They recur.”

That really doesn’t answer the question, now does -”

Tactical Alert. Senior Staff, to the Bridge.”

That is us.” She shifted to duty mode, as though she hadn’t just been through some private hell.

That’s it – hope you enjoyed it! =D May your day be filled with things to be grateful for!

  1. I’m with the others…this is intense. What I love about her is how sharp she is at evaluating emotions even when she doesn’t quite understand or experience them. Even in her dreams, she’s still calculating. It’s utterly fascinating.

  2. I loved this. It was just what I needed after a week without the internet and being adrift without my online community. Finally he gets his hearts desire and I couldn’t be happier. As for the night terrors – she is in good hands and she’s one tough cookie. Their connection makes me so happy, even though her torment spoke to my heart 🙂 Thankfully she has Trip!

  3. Wow. Intense in a whole different way than the others. Poor T’Pol. Because how does a vulcan deal with something like this? Hard enough for humans but with the mind of a vulcan — isn’t the very concept of a night terror illogical? Too many emotions. Very nicely painted.

    1. This is definitely, DEFINITELY not an easy or logical time in T’Pol’s life, for reasons that don’t become clear for several episodes after this one…she had a horrific experience aboard the Seleya, and the aftershocks….the night terror isn’t the first (I’m thinking; and I know it’s not the last). It’s a lot like PTSD…

To say that she doesn’t handle this well is an understatement. Too many emotions? Yeah, waaaay too many.

She’s teetering on the edge of crisis, and Trip is only just beginning to catch on that there’s a problem…and then the Tactical Alert comes, and he doesn’t get the chance to follow through, because instead he gets punched in the face by a transdimensional alien (because, well this is sci-fi romance, and these kinds of things happen, y’know?).

    1. Or the weird phase-dhifting alien walking through the walls…

Too bad that T’Pol’s troubles aren’t even close to over, at this point…

But she did finally get her Tucker on, so there’s that…

And that Trip. Quite a guy, I tell you – and a gentleman even after he gets the girl…uh, Vulcan…

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
