WIPpet Wednesday: A Taste of Sole?

Welcome to WIPpet Wednesday, a weekly blog hop which encourages writers to move their WIPs (works-in-progress) to publication by posting excerpts related to the date. It is hosted by the lovely K.L. Schwengelmaven of bad boys, stock dogs, and flying monkeys!

Hi there! This month, I’m participating in CampNaNoWriMo. I’ve finished one WIP, The Stars are Fire, and have made it to the halfway point in another, Perchance to Dream. Neither of these are ready for public consumption, yet, so…

I’m continuing with snippets from my Story A Day May Challenge: Star Trek: Enterprise fan fiction exploring the interspecies relationship of T’Pol and Trip, in a project titled The IDIC Romance.

Disclaimer: T’Pol,  Trip, and all the rest of Star Trek are property of Paramount; no copyright infringement intended. I just want to play with them, and I’m careful!

A bit about the challenge:

Story a Day is just that- a story every day in May. To make the challenge more interesting for myself, I used all of the prompts offered throughout the month.

The stories are roughly sequential, with various tones, POVs, and voices, due to the particular prompts that were in play during the writing.

For those keeping track:

This is the first installment of Story #4, Tigress T’Pol . The prompt for this story

was to write a story of exactly 2000 words. An additional guest prompt from Heidi Durrow invited us to explore passion in this story.

WIPpet Math:

Today is July 9, 2014.

Today’s math…

  • 16 sentences, adding the month and day.

This snippet is told from Trip’s point of view. The wounded Klingon, Klaang, had been abducted from Enterprise. In an attempt to find him and bring him home, Captain Archer has ordered them to Rigel 10 – the first populated alien world Trip has been to. It doesn’t help that he’s paired with T’Pol, who clearly knows her way around, and seems to think she’s in charge. And then there’s that little matter of the odd history they’ve shared…

This is an add-on scene for the pilot episode: Broken Bow Part 1. I‘ve done my best to extrapolate without violating series canon.

“Hey, T’Pol, how long are we going to pretend that nothing happened between us?”

I was a little shocked at myself; I’d planned to wait her out, see if she ever brought it up. But then, I had a long history of sticking my foot in my mouth, and I was apparently hungry for the sole of my boot.

“I know of another merchant. Stay with me, and attempt to restrain yourself.” T’Pol acted like I hadn’t said anything, or maybe like anything I said was beneath her notice. Where was that alluring temptress she’d been in Fusion? She was as full of surprises now as she’d been in that club – I’d give her that much. Too bad they weren’t at all the ones I’d been hoping for ever since she walked into the Capn’s Ready Room.

Maybe she’d forgotten all about that night – but, if she had, why had she looked at me that way when she first came in? For a second or two, it was as though we were back there, with the music flowing through us. Even now, I could feel it – a deep awareness of her, more than physical desire, something I’d never felt before. I wanted more.

But maybe she just wanted to forget. She was as damned arrogantly superior as all Vulcans, like she knew more than any human ever could. Probably thought it was way beneath her to do something so primitive as to feel desire, or anything else, for some human male she saw in a club.

Will Trip get a reaction out of T’Pol? Will he regret it, if he does? Who’s really in charge here? Will they find the missing Klingon? Come back next week for the next excerpt!

Story A Day commentary…

Full version of the story…

These posts are the seeds of a project that will germinate over the next months, so input is especially valuable. Already, new stories are weaving themselves into the fabric. No need to feel shy; I’m a friendly sort, and will keep my phase pistol on stun ..for the most part.

  1. Adding my appreciation to the “hungry for the sole of my boot” line. That made me grin. it must be sucky being stuck in that kind of limbo with a Vulcan on the other side of it, though.

    1. I am so glad Trip stuck that like in my head! It was classically him, and he does have that tendency to make people happy. Maybe not so much Vulcan people – but that’s another story…

In this one, his frustration and confusion are just beginning…

  2. Lol’d… (though, I had to laugh even more at another line you didn’t include here

It made me wonder how Vulcans ever made more Vulcans

Du Hast by Rammstein… Been a while since I heard that one. Though, it fits frightfully well between these two.

    1. That was my SECOND favorite line, and I’m glad someone enjoyed it. Trip is one frustrated human, and might be more so right now, if he had any clue just how Vulcans DO make more Vulcans! =)

I never heard the song until the video. I have a general idea of the meaning, and it does seem to fit. The music seems to mesh seamlessly with the clips the creator (Creator?) chose, too. And I like T’Pol giving Trip dirty looks while the wind whips her hair around!

        1. Wanna hear something funny? I drove myself a little craazy tonight, trying to figure out how you knew that line…then I remembered I linked the previous posts. D’OH!

Anyway, I should probably mention that the snippets are being revised as I go through them. I figure it’ll give me a jump on editing, later, to do them that way. But, what is in the original versions may be very different from the snippet in question.

In the case of that line about how little Vulcans get made, it’ll be virtually unchanged, which is more than I can say about any of the OTHER lines in this week’s excerpt! =D

          1. Changing that line would be sad… it’s too cute. (though saying it in reference to “little Vulcans” is priceless. Do you think you could fit THAT in there?

I edit as I type in…. and sometimes as I scribble, so I kind of get your process too.

        2. Oh…and I forgot the other thing I was going to say above…my mother used to say that love was the closest thing to hate. Both require passion.

Of course, neither of these two REALLY seem to hate each other as much as they are bewildered by the blend of attraction and aversion. That’s what makes it so much fun to watch those early episodes, and write those stories, because I’ve seen the evolution of their relationship into something a lot closer to love than to hate (which doesn’t guarantee them a HEA, any more than it does any real couple).

But, yeah…T’Pol can definitely give the impression of hate, and Trip is no slouch at giving vent to his outrage.

I’m glad my own life is not this – ummm- charged.

          1. Alanii said something like that about hate too… He was trying explain to Kieri what happened, why he was so absent.. and told his son he “didn’t hate him; to hate would have involved” him being an active participant in his son’s life. So, yeah… I see where your mother is coming from.

  3. Obviously I’m not the only one who loved “I was apparently hungry for the sole of my boot.” Too funny! This is really fantastic, getting his side of the story. He certainly has a very different view of it than she does.

    1. Trip is definitely an amusing guy who has no trouble laughing at himself. =)

And yeah, there’s a tremendous failure to translate between their perspectives. It stays that way for a while…

At this point, Trip has no idea whatsoever that T’Pol is supposed to be married soon, or anything else about how Vulcans connect with one another…let’s just say things aren’t going to clear up with any consistency anytime soon, but that this is definitely a case where the journey is an adventure in itself, and necessary, too.

  4. I love ST: Enterprise. That show was awesome, and gone way too soon, in my opinion! Trip was my fave. 🙂 And this snippet it great (and I totally LOLed at Trip)! I love the tension and the way he seems to be all tied up in knots by T’Pol. Seeing the guy flustered and agitated and unsure when it comes to a woman is great!

    1. I think Enterprise is my favorite of all the trek series, bar none. “awesome, and gone way too soon’ is a perfect descriptor.

I was very late to the party, since I only started watching it last spring (I had a 3 week old and was about to drive cross-country while nursing when it premiered, and then I didn’t have cable, so I only heard bits and pieces. I wasn’t sure about the Quantum Leap guy as a starship captain (I was WRONG!), and I resented the idea of a sexy token Vulcan chick (I was right about the sexy part, but OH-SO-VERY WRONG about the token part…because WOW! T’POL!!!

Trip reminds me of my husband..and pretty much all the nice guys I’ve known. I have a thing for those nice guys!

Of course, I have an utter fascination with the green-blooded and pointy-eared type that goes back to when I was 13 and Eden forced me to read “Spock’s Brain” (now, that’s a bit embarrassing!).

So T’Pol is my favorite, and Trip ranks a very close second. Because those two go together, even if they are too stubborn to really figure that out for a looooong delicious time!

The idea that Trip and T’Pol encountered one another at the jazz club in San Francisco came from that delightful little decon scene. Now, Trip’s a gentleman – and I just can’t imagine him exploring T’Pol’s terrain without some history or signal that she just might be receptive…and I can’t imagine T’Pol not responding forcefully to stop him, and certainly she wouldn’t have been using it as an excuse for some fairly intimate and definitely arousing caresses, if she wasn’t interested – there’s no logic in that!

What poor Trip hasn’t figured out yet is that T’Pol’s even more tied up in knots than he is, and she’s got no context for this kind of thing…

But he doesn’t know any of that yet, on Rigel Ten. So ‘flustered and agitated and unsure’ – yup, that about covers it. He’s caught between being besotted with this intriguing creature, and wanting to throttle the most annoying woman he’s ever met! =)

  5. Lovely excerpt Shan Jeniah, you write so beautifully. I love the way Trip is very attracted to T’Pol and yet finds her irritating and arrogant. It’s so interesting reading the story from his point of view. Good stuff! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Elaine. These characters really inspire me. So much sizzle, so much conflict, so much fun together, right from the start.

T’Pol is lovely. It didn’t hurt that a former model (Jolene Blalock) portrayed her, even if T’Pol has a very different look. Trip isn’t the only man on board (or out in space, for that matter!) who finds her far more than easy on the eyes.

He does seem to be the only one brave and/or foolish enough to get further than dreaming or talking about it, though…

And T’Pol is decidedly irritating and arrogant at this point, particularly with Trip – at least, from a human perspective. She hasn’t learned yet that humans aren’t generally big fans of bluntly stated truths and inflexible logic.

And with Trip, it’s magnified, because of the struggle she’s having with herself. She doesn’t dare to ease her control around him, because he stirs her up too much…of course, sometimes the road to pleasure is paved with good intentions….;)

    1. Why, thank you. Yup, Trip’s not quite finding this deep-space exploration – or his pointy-eared fantasy woman, for that matter! – to be quite what he expected. But at least his engines still need him! =)

    1. I’ll confess; it was my favorite line of the snippet, and definitely in my top lines for the whole story.

It is wonderful to see that others enjoyed it to, and kept on reading. Trip’s got a way to go before there’s anything remotely resembling resolution to ANY of his T’Pol issues!

Next week’s WIPpet will up the ante a bit…

  6. Haha that sentence: “But then, I had a long history of sticking my foot in my mouth, and I was apparently hungry for the sole of my boot.” actually made me laugh out loud. Brilliant!

    1. It made me laugh out loud, too, when Trip told me that’s what he was thinking. He definitely has his own way of expressing things. He’s a lot of fun to watch, and to write. =)

    1. Trip has definitely mastered the fine art of being chagrined with himself, and he’s under no delusions that he’s perfect. But, oh! is that little Vulcan woman driving him to irritable distraction!

I do love Trip. He has such a charming way – and, unlike some charmers, he backs it up with genuine decency.

I have a feeling it may take T’Pol considerably longer to truly begin to appreciate his better qualities…

  7. Yeah, go ahead and rationalize it, Trip. How’s that working for you? And I love this, “I had a long history of sticking my foot in my mouth, and I was apparently hungry for the sole of my boot.” I laughed out loud at that.

    1. *bows low before Kathi, who just Dr. Philled Trip Tucker!*

Rationalization just doesn’t seem to be working any better for Trip than rationality was for T’Pol a bit ago…maybe they both need to throw caution and reason to the wind (oh, wait, they’re inside, so no wind…) and give passion a go-round…

Yeah, Trip got me with that line, too. I wish I could take credit for it, but it popped onto the page whole, with his accent and even his ‘can’t believe I’m saying this but can’t stop’ face.

He does have a tendency to speak first and think about it later…

    1. Poor Trip indeed!

Imagine having an intense wordless exchange with an alluring and mysterious Vulcan woman, a woman who stays in your imagination long after she leaves the restaurant…

And then she shows up to crash the party on your historic mission, peeing in your Wheaties, refusing to shake your hand, and bossing you around like you’re too stupid to be trusted to think for yourself…

I’m thinking, at this point, Trip’s wishing she was anywhere but here -and yet, he still wants some kind of follow-up to that chance encounter…

      Poor, poor Trip!

Take a chance! Type something in this box, and see what happens! =D
